Carlos Lopes is just so awesome to watch, his stride is so perfect and fast making it look beautiful and effortless. One of the best runners ever, period.

this brings back some real nice memories. was at school in the early to mid 1980s and ran for my cross country team. used to love it and i was always intent on watching athletics championships with my now deceased father. what a time of life - so much simpler then! Carlos Lopes is a name i will never forget. absolutely incredible runner. such endurance and what a mindset he must have had. one of my favourites. the 10,000metres, cross country and the marathon, this man was ace at all of those events. especially cross country running.

I saw this race on TV that day- The idea was to beat Rono's world record. At the middle of the race the commentator said that it would be not possible. As you can see, the last 4 laps were amazing and the record at less than a second. And look to Lopes perfect running style! What a champion!

I finished in tenth place in this highly competitive race for the United States, in 28: 07.34 for the 10,000 meters! It was grueling and very fast as the World Record was missed by less than one second by Lopez and his teammate finished off the Record by a mere 3.21 seconds in the same race of Portugal !!!

It's really frustrating to us, the Portuguese, that foreigners always pronouce Portuguese names making them sound Spanish: it's NOT "Low-pez"; it's "LÓPSH" (the "e" is totally mute, unlike the Spanish "e"). Also, the man's first name is "CARLOS" and not "Carlo", which is the italian version of the same name. Damn it! (lol)

those were the days when the commentators were funny and legendary themselves. coleman was hilarious i found. brendan foster was a retired distance runner himself at this time and champion in his own right. I read his book when i was competing myself back then.

Does anybody know why Lopes did not run this aggressively in the world championships later in 1983?
@MadSlantedPowers4 жыл бұрын
No one ran aggressively in that race. Most of the runners were still in it until the last lap. Lopes just didn’t seem to have the flat out speed that the others did. It seems he was better at something like this race, a longer sustained drive. Perhaps if he been bold enough to take off with 3 or 4 laps to go in that one, maybe he would have at least got a medal. He got the Olympic marathon gold, two more World Cross Country Championships, and another fast 10,000, though.
