To everyone saying Dorian Yates should’ve been on, he worked incredibly hard in the gym. He was probably one of the greatest Mr.Olympias of all time, no doubt, but he had to work for it. Who would have better genetics? Someone that trained every day in a week, ate properly, and took the steroids, or someone that trained 3 times, ate like shit, took minimal steroids, and still looked good.
@Tomn8er
@Tomn8er 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah Dorian's actually an example of someone who succeeded in spite of lesser genetics. Yes he was gifted in the back and calves and had a great structure but other than that nothing too impressive about the guy when you break it down piece by piece. He just outworked everybody in the gym with his laser-focussed intensity

I agree that Sergio was the best! I remember seeing him on "Wide world Of Sports" on TV when I was a kid around 1968-70. He was a monster, freakish, he didn't look human. He'd stick out his right thigh relaxed, shake it, it was like this huge water balloon, then he'd tense it hard and you would hear gasps from the crowd I was like carved granite. The other contestants often would just not compete in the same contest because they knew Olivia had already won. Even by today's drug induced bodies few hold a candle to Sergio. now think about this for a moment, Sergio had a full time job, as a COP no less, plus he was not known for being a year around trainer, disciplined dieter, or a good poser. Imagine Sergio if he was alive today, in his early 30's and was given a full year to train for Mr. Olympia. He has gurus to help him with his diet and training, sponsers to buy him al the food supplements and gear he needs, and the motivation to train hard like a Million Dollar pay out to win the contest. Sergio was 5'9"-10" his completion weight was around 240. Imagine him coming in ripped at 270-5 lbs with a 30-1 inch waist! He's blow Phil Heath off the stage, folks.
@Tomn8er
@Tomn8er 7 жыл бұрын
You're right it's scary to think how good he could've been. I think had he been born a couple decades later and competed in the 90s we might've had indisputably the greatest and most dominant bodybuilder who ever lived, never mind Schwarzenegger, Yates or Coleman! As it is Oliva's still way up there despite what a colossal disadvantage he was at.
@humphrex
@humphrex 6 жыл бұрын
I dont agree, but i wont disagree either, since we cant know. As Tom said himself, being resistant to drugs and the effect of roid is genetics as well. So while Sergio was huge on tes only, he might have not responded as well as guys like Ronnie to modern drugs.

I watched Sergio on Wild World of Sports around 1970. When he hit the most muscular it looked like a turtle sticking its head out of its shell. Who knows what Sergio could have been if he'd have Weider's backing, moving him out to Cali and giving him the right 'guidance.'
@rh_BOSS
@rh_BOSS 5 жыл бұрын
Oliva maxed out at around 230. He'd have to take HGH and insulin to get to 270 lbs like everybody else does these days. So he'd look like everybody else does these days, distended gut and all. Common drug protocols define the look of a bb era. Why do you think noone these days can attain that granite hard look that top guys had in Yates/early Coleman era? That's definitely not because they don't train hard enough like Dorian says. That's because back then insulin wasn't used to such an extent and noone took UGL shit made from chinese precursors. Most drugs were still legit pharma grade and made in USA/Europe. Mexico also had several strong pharmaceutical companies operating under the pretense of "veterinary use".

Rammy has really big calves, over 20 inches actually. Its just he has 36 inch thighs, which makes almost anyone's calves look small. He'd need a pair like Dorian or Dallas in order to be proportional. He has uber thighs with average or good calves.
@Tomn8er
@Tomn8er 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah I completely agree but it's all relative though. His uber thighs make his average calves look downright shitty
@monsoon1174
@monsoon1174 7 жыл бұрын
In his most recent showings, particularly the Arnold Classic in Spain, his calves aren't bad. During that show, his calves didn't look out of proportion with his upper thighs, though they could still use a bit of extra size. I think you're basing your assumption of poor calves off of Rammy's earlier years. They were atrociously underdeveloped during that time for sure, but he simply wasn't training them. They've responded well to the training he's done so far. I don't think Rammy has a genetic weak point honestly. He's about as perfect as a bodybuilder can be. He just has to pull it all together then he'll be the GOAT. Time will tell if he ever can though. Personally, my fingers are crossed, hoping he will at some point.

River Hewitt Damnnnn 20 inch calves??!?!! I have huge calves and their super ripped but 20 inch calves are insane and I guarantee no matter how big or small they look that when you see those calves in person they are going to look fucking enormous on some next level shit. Ramy's new progress pics, and don't freak out if you read this Tom, but he honestly looks like he could beat Phil! Yes beat Phil! But how you ask? Two reasons, his level of mass is the same as Phil's if not better and more importantly, Ramy is 330lbs shredded to the bone!!! He has no gut whatsoever. Forget bubble gut he doesn't even have a regular gut. Hiis stomach goes in now and is a pure 6-pack with crazy obliques too. His skin is looking ultra thin and his chest looks so full in a way I've never seen on anyone before. Look at Luimarco's latest video comparing his latest pics to Phil last year without and preconceived notions about what the LUI thinks about Ramy ( even though his points are usually valid ) and compare the front double and lat spread to Phil's. he smokes him! I know he needs all the mandatories to win but besides the most muscular, ( Ramys hands on hips most muscular is close to Phil's ) Ramy might have him on even the side tricep. We all know his legs are better than Phil's. Check it out and make a video on it. Canadian Bacon was the bomb movie! Lol

Sergio was on the Cuban national weightlifting team in the early sixties and defected during the Central American Games in Kingston, Jamaica in 1962. The rest, as they say, is history. He competed in the A.A.U. Mr America several times in the mid sixties and won the most muscular competition but second overall even though he was obviously the best. He also won the Jr Mr America. In 1966, I saw pictures of Sergio in an old Spanish language Mexican bodybuilding magazine (from 1961) a friend of mine had,showing him as a teenager in Cuba lifting and posing and he was impressive even as a teenager. Back then, the A.A.U. Mr America required that its competitors show some background in other sports, like Olympic lifting, track & field, power lifting, and were awarded extra points. He competed in A.A.U Jr Nationals Weightlifting Championships, which he won as a middle heavy, and there were pictures published in the old Muscular Development Magazine from 1965 or so. He got fed up with the A.A.U. and went to the I.F.B.B. like many top bodybuilders in the 1960's. As a weightlifter he showed good technique and flexibility, which is rare for a guy so massive and muscular. He became a police officer in Chicago and was married but years later, after an argument, his wife shot him in the chest with his service revolver. He survived, it take more than a 38 slug to kill a man with with such big and muscular chest. Bodybuilders come and go, but it is very rare to find bodybuilder with so tiny waists in proportion to shoulders. The selection as number one genetically gifted bodybuilder is right on point. My other favorite would be Bill Pearl.

Ronnie was natural at that time, there was a study done where they tested ronnies genetics and he had a certain protein that would maximise muscle protein synthesis but also make his muscles more resistant to damage, so he had to train them harder but he recovered the next day. The way his insulin worked meant that all his nutrients and carbs went straight to his muscles, he was also completely thermogenic all the time constantly burning fat, so he could never get fat, when he looked bloated in the off season it was usually like 30 pounds of straight water you could see veins still. His body just runs through carbs and is a muscle building machine, one of the most genetically gifted for sure, and definitely natural at the start

Arnold wasn't the better bodybuilder. You need to understand that Sergio Oliva worked a regular job and trained when he could. The Weiders flew Arnold to America, paid him a salary, paid for his posing classes, and installed him as their champion. They wanted to use Arnold to grow the sport. They literally said all of this decades later.

That photo of Sergio you asked about was taken in Deland Florida in 1971 by Arthur Jones after Sergio had pumped his arms with the Nautilus bicep and triceps machines. His arms from top to bottom measured bigger than his head! There's a front double bicep photo from that same photo shoot that even today has to be seen to be believed.

Thanks for taking all the time to research this and give your top picks and justificationS which resulted in a terrific and interesting video to the bodybuilders of yesterday and today. I have got to agree with most of your picks including Sergio Oliva as number 1. If he had been sponsored by the Weider's like Arnold was, we would have gotten to see more of his potential realized. Imagine Sergio not having to work and just work out with his peers in California. He would have brought more size and more importantly more separation and definition to the stage. Truly sad that Sergio did not have the guidance to realize his potential as the greatest bodybuilder of all time. With that said, he did have the best genetics of all time as you have said.

Flex Wheeler is the most genetically gifted BB of all time. In 1993 he was simply flawless. That kneeling twisting back double biceps is the best ever. He had his flaws, but I never saw a physique better than that. Perfect. He should have been a Mr. Olympia at least once.

I respect other opinion really. But 95% critics and hate on Phil is BS. I mean if we take a look body part by body part, we all have flaws. But if he is not genetically most gifted then no one has ever been. Round muscle, mass, condition all is there. Yes he is little cocky, but i think it is just the way he showcases him self. He is maybe in private life more humble then Dexter Jackson. I mean there is a possibility right? There are so many disrespectful people on the internet, especially younger generation, maybe his ego is fighting back. But when he retire, we will all miss him mark my words.

Couldn't agree more about Sergio. I got to meet him in 1983 back in my writing days when I was covering the Mr. America in Tampa. Even at the age he was then, I'd never seen that much mass on one human frame. I'm a powerlifter, and I've been around some HUGE guys, including having gotten to train with Lou Ferrigno, also in '83, but Sergio was a FREAK.

I was at the 2014 Mr Olympia and had been absent from the sport for 3 or 4 years. I had no idea who this guy was big Ramy. I was in the VIP section sitting right behind the judges when he came out at free to this day, I have never seen anything like it in my life. I'm speaking from a genetic freakazoid miss that I've never seen before or since. Unfortunately, he never brought the definition that would have won him 7 8 maybe 9 mr. Olympia's. At night I was sitting there during the live broadcast and the announcers were going absolutely bananas. His shoulders were so freaking whiny had a tiny waist big arms crazy wide back and the quads from hell. To me, he is the most genetically gifted bodybuilder ever. I will always harbor a little anger towards him that he didn't work hard enough at conditioning and it may not even be his fault he was being coached. Nobody's talking about big Rami for the Olympia and if he comes in under 285 lb he has a chance of winning the whole game
