Oil (or whatever they used back then) was a million times better than what they use now. The weird super dark stuff from the past few years rubs off in the armpits and groin making them look a horrible yellow, and the parts where it's not rubbed off just look too dark to see anything

Dexter was beefier. Imo, his muscles were fuller in appearance, though it seemed in some poses Ray had nicer, fuller quads. I feel Ray had the aesthetics. I'd take his mid-section any day over Dexter's. Regardless, two amazing athletes, and competitors.

I’m in the minority of people who really dislike the “3D look” when it comes to aesthetics and the body I most covet. The harder and dryer look, even when it results in flatter muscles is much more pleasing to my eyes. As much as I can appreciate the awe inspiring effect that round full muscles produce, but if bodybuilding is about the body we’d want to have, that’s my two cents

Yeah, I much prefer pre insulin days bodybuilding (before 1995). Here in the back double biceps pose for example, ray has much more details and separation than jackson. There are almost zero striation with dexter, whereas we can see them on, at least, the traps, the lower lats, the delts with ray. Jackson looks watery in comparison. And jackson had a 3D waist to go with that. In the early 90s, they were smaller but displayed more quality.

Your qualifications for higher places depended on how many arnold classics and how many runner up placings they got (not to mention personal preference to aesthetics and consistency). Levrone was amazing but soft, with bad legs and no bicep separation, no back separation most of the time, Flex was a coin flip early on, he lacked too much size (but he had a very nice physique, let’s be real), had bad lat spreads, Nasser was inconsistent in conditioning, Shawn was too small. Great on his own, a lot worse when standing next to somebody bigger. Dorian was arguably the only threat for today’s top bodybuilders and even he had a lot or arguable winning years, with no arms and symmetry later on in his career. Weird legs as well. Dexter would smoke a big portion of 1990-1996 line ups, who knows what kind of damage would Jay’s, Phil’s And Kai’s physique do in those years. Now factor in today bodybuilders like Hadi and Big ramy. Their conditioning and raw amount of muscle would be too much for most of the top 90-96 bodybuilders. Hell, even Hassan with his “bad” conditioning would be a menace, due to how insane his physique is. Arguably some of the best wheels ever, easily one of the best guns that would be on stage, very thick chest, not bad mid section and calves (not Mr O material with his conditioning tho). Modern bodybuilders are in another era, they are for the most cases, way more complete. Why I stated 90-96? 97-98-99 and onwards were the most stacked years ever, with prime Ronnie, Chris Cormiere, bigger Flex, etc

This comparison really shows the difference in insulin use between the 90s and now. Shawn is absolutely peeled and the quality of the muscle is incredibly high. Where as Dexter’s muscle is much bigger, rounder, and much more blurred.

It’s too bad the older photos aren’t as good of quality. Ray’s conditioning is superior, though the photo quality makes it harder to confirm. Dexter is obviously more muscular and has won an Olympia title over Jay Cutler, so clearly not to be taken lightly.

Some comments here make me lose my cool quite a bit. Guys, don't mix up the questions: "Which looks better?" and "Which would place better at Mr.O.?" Also some saying you can't compare physiques by pictures. Well that's the only way to compare physiques, unless you're in front row at live event. Also some saying size shouldn't decide. The "you can't compare with pictures" argument is incredibly lame and lazy, made by the same simple-minded people who assume "video > pics" in every scenario, despite the fact that side-by-side videos wouldn't be properly synched or scaled to even allow for pose-for-pose comparisons.

The judges from 90's till these days are so fascinated about mass / volume (keeping conditioning aside) that they hardly considered aesthetics, posing and quality muscle. Hence classic aesthetic physics like Shawn's never got the nod in the Mr. O stage. He was superior in conditioning, muscularity, muscle quality, proportion, posing. But unfortunately the judges's eyes got glued to only and only size (even if it is out of shape as 96 and 97 Yates). The results were obvious.Otherwise, Shawn could have been crowned Mr. O in '94 and 96.And still; pictures are not the best way to compare two gems like Ray and Dex. it depends on how their muscle flew during posing and how good they presented their best body parts. For example, the way most athletes hit the side chest pose hardly look like a chest pose and looks more like a arm, delt and frontal chest pose, the pectoral muscles flowing more downward. In my eyes, Shawn still beats Dex in this pose with his upper chest popping out from behind.Dex never had any prominent feathers in his quads. His calves were nowhere near Shawn's. Ray is all the way a more complete bodybuilder than Dex if quality is considered.

Ray had amazing quality to his physique, - conditioning, proportion, symmetry.... But he just wasnt big enough. Dexter was almost as good in terms of quality, fractions in it.....but then add 25lbs of muscle and it's done. For a smaller guy to win, their conditioning and density has to be miles ahead of the bigger guys....but at least one of the bigger guys will come in cut and balanced.

The best way is how Kai greene does it. Actually go from a retracted shoulder state and roll them forward (it doesnt scrunch it how you think) then arch the lumber /lower back and lean back (emphasize leaning the thoracic region back). The end result is the shoulders althought being rounded forward, end up being behind or in like with the neck/head, rather than being in front of the head

In regards to the front lat spread and Dexter and Phil looking shit in it, it's because they don't rotate their shoulders backwards and don't breathe into their chest to pop-out the lats and widen the chest. Instead they somewhat crunch into it to try and flex the chest and shoulders. Check how Dorian and Cbum hit it.

Not taking anything away from Shawn...who's on the short list of greatest bodybuilders, but your assessment is spot on IMO. Shawn would be competing in the 212s today and would have his hands full dealing with Flex and a few others. Dext is an open competitor for a reason...his stage weight is around 230 lbs. My comparison is more like a Great White vs an Orca...both are dangerous...but it's a great White vs an Orca.

Thanks for the video!!! I do love this video. Shawn is also my favorite Btw, regarding height. I saw many years ago both Shawn Ray and Vince Tylor. I am 5'7" (Dexter height) Vince was my height of maybe a little bit higher. However. Shawn was at the very least one inch shorter than me. I am positive. That makes a different on stage... The only comparison I do not fully agree is in the back double biceps. They're closer IMO. details, calves, even lower back are in favour of Ray. Truly enjoyable video!!!

First of all, it's an absolute shame that this channel has only 47k subs. Secondly Dexter is right, that eras cannot be compared. Ray was a product of different times, when posing and aesthetics still meant something. Thanx a lot Dorian ;-) I would also love to look like Shawn but I must admit that Dexter's only weaknesses were average calf-free legs, broad abdominal muscles and with time a suspicious left arm. Apart from these things, he has a truly phenomenal body.

Great comparison, and on the basis on which you made the comparison an understandable result. However if you went by a judging criteria of the late 80's early 90's then I think Ray's complete development, superior separation , better aesthetics, better posing and harder looking physique would win. I don't really see Dexter's size as that much of an advantage. Even in 93 when Ray went up against Yates, Yates size at 256lbs did dominate, but it was size which was hard with dry conditioning, and complete proportions, even if Yates lacked aesthetics from the front. I take the view, which is personal, that size is a means to an end, and the end is conditioned proportion. Bodybuilding is not about weight, if it was you might as well get rid of judges and just have weighing scales on stage, a body composition assessment and a mathematical criteria to score the competitors which factors in height. Bodybuilding is as much an art as it is a science or sport, but art is difficult to quantify. Great content, and should spark some informed debate, which does run to the heart of what bodybuilding criteria should be used.
