I started playing guitar by ear only in 1983 after taking 6 years of piano lessons. About a year ago I decided to start working on triads, chord tones, major pentatonics over chord progressions and learning the notes on the fretboard. About two months ago I started playing dramatically different. It just happened and I feel like I can play anything. No more noodling with scales and licks.

I grew up playing trumpet and actually wanted to attend Berklee as a trumpet player but I learned music theory more related to playing wind instruments single note instruments. Learning key signatures and playing the correlating notes in that scale of the key. Also learning the notes in the changes for jazz improv but never took the time to learn the actual relation of the chord changes in the song. Took music theory in high school learning to write 4 part harmonies ect. but it's not my forte. Since picking up guitar it has exposed me to a whole different realm of applying music theory. I'm trying to rely less on my ear/feel and get a better understanding how to apply theory to my guitar playing. I understand major minor diminished and augmented chords and 1 5 4 basic progressions, major and minor pentatonic scales but it's still a bit confusing to me but then again I could be over thinking it. Thanks Tomo, nice shirt btw.

Thank you for a very interesting lesson! I have watched several and you are amazing. There are so many things to work on the guitar that sometimes it feels overwhelming. I have learned the major and minor scales, the intervalls and the major/minor triads. I have also worked some solos to improve phrasing and working bends, vibratos. And of course I have learned a few entire songs for fun. But when improvising I always need to think about what I do and then it is often too late, and I leave out a lot of stuff I wish I could use. What is the most rewarding if I only have one hour a day for practise? Learning songs? Playing triads over songs/backing tracks? Exploring freely the guitar?

As you said, I would rather have the knowledge of something and choose not to utilize it than to not be knowledgeable about a topic and be ignorant. And let me clarify ignorance simply means one doesn't know something or has never been taught about it. It has nothing to do with being stupid... We are all ignorant of something that goes on in this big ole universe. I myself want to learn as much as I can about the world around me and continue to do so until the day comes I am not able to anymore... Love the channel subbed!

Well now I know the names of ALL that stuff I play. 🤠 Not to worry after 47 years playing I’m just now learning to sing while playing. And boy does my playing suffer when I open my mouth. Lol PS: I sat in with the UC Berkeley jazz band for several months when I was in 10th grade at Antioch high school in Northern Cal. . I was good friends with the 1st chair trumpet player, and he was able to get me in when they had no guitarist. Fun times.

Michael Brecker, Joe Lovano, Eric Dolphy, Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk, Charlie Byrd, Joe Pass, Emily Remler, John Scofield, Miles Davis! I could do this all day. That good old blues turnaround still gets me every time with Robben Ford and Jimi Hendrix. John Coltrane is good and the best is still Billie Holiday and Oscar Peterson and so many others... TomoFujitaMusic! Edit: Louis Armstrong! How could I forget? Music has got me bad.

Thank you Tomo, really think I understand. I've watched hundreds of your videos, and you always improve my mood. Not that I was in a bad mood, just laughter when you apologize for getting sidetracked. Feel free, it's entertaining and fun when you go off like that! You chose C because there aren't any sharps/flats and that was your wisdom I'm sure. So it's 1 mjr , 2mjr, 3mnr ,4mjr, 5 mjr , 6mnr , and 7 sus technically but can be major right? Triads I thought were 3 strings only but you played triads using 6 strings. So it's 3 notes! A triad can have 6 strings but because of the notes of say E minor have E on the 1st and 6th those count as one of three notes! I think that's right... right? I've been playing since 15, but I had a long time where I couldn't play for different reasons. Too long! So I'm 49 and just bought a Fender Squier Affinity SSS and a Fender Mustang LT25 modeling amp (fit my price range, pretty good guitar the Affinity I think) and the amp has preset effects for practicing with out having to buy peddles. Once I'm less rusty and ready to advance to the next level I'm going to subscribe to "MGW" because I know I'll advance more quickly with your teaching methods. Plus I just think you're a genuinely good human being! Thanks for always being entertaining and always sharing your knowledge with us...I always feel better after watching your videos. Drink your coffee and maybe you'll make a video on playing at 200 BPM!!! 😂 ✌️🎸🎶🙏 P.S. I really hope you feel better from your allergies, thanks for making the video anyway. I'm having coffee for no particular reason 😂 okay... now next Sammi in her 3rd lesson. I'm looking forward to that one. She's gonna' be great. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree!!

I started following the triad sessions on GW but haven't yet come across coverage of those variants. Are they introduced on some of the vids in GW? Thanks

HI Tomo, thanks for the lesson, I wonder at the diatonic triads starting at 5:15 if you use the same "chord shape" for the triads on the 5th string on the C major scale, when you go up on the fretboard with the different degrees (which gives, C major, D minor, E minor, etc.)? Thanks a lot!
