Hi Tomo - just wanted to say that at the age of 51 I finally decided to really learn how to play guitar but your guitar wisdom course was the first one I found that didn't use tablatures. That made a big difference in my progress because it forced me to learn triads, how chords are formed - but it all made sense now. Your positive attitude is awesome! Keep up the good work and thanks for sharing all your knowledge!

Yes, you're right about my Guitar Wisdom course has no Tabs, no PDFs! But I am so happy that a lot of people really trust me, my teaching style. I really appreciate it. I am so thankful and grateful. I know it's a little hard in the beginning if you so used to see shapes! But now you can hear those shapes with intervals and you can play same phrases in different positions so you made yourself improve from what you have done! Good job Jay!! I love Triads! Only 3 Inversions! Thank you so much for subscribing my Guitar Wisdom. Feel free to wrote any comments on the forum too. Thank you!!

I am in same boat, playing mediocre and relying on tab for over 40 years with little progress over last 30 years. I am subscribed to Guitar Wisdom and agree we don't need tab to learn, we have a fretboard. I don't learn patterns anymore, I learn the scales and intervals that form the patterns. Having to stop and replay sections to see what Tomo is doing and what scale tone, what inversion is being used, forces me to learn the fundamentals and the fretboard. Tomo, I love your subtle philosophical comments, they are golden.

I used study solfejio when I was 8, when I started to play the piano. I started playing the guitar at the age of 13. I studied so many chords, then continued to play with tabs. I had 6 years pause and now, when I started to play again, I discovered you as an amazing teacher. I love your videos and thank you for what you are making for people who are desired to learn music theory. I`ve been watching your videos for only a month and I feel so comfortable and motivated while watching them. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

@@matigoldbergguitar9013 correct. I took s lessons for about 4 years. I feel like the teacher I had skipped over a lot of the basics and important techniques when I was a beginner and I didn’t learn some beginner stuff until much later on and was forced to play catch up and learn on my own at a lot slower pace. I don’t know if that makes sense but just the way this lesson came across

In 1979, invited to replace lead guitarist in a classic rock band, I got a BIG lesson in the value and importance of rhythm guitar. The leader of the band was showing me parts on the Allman Brothers' "Whippin' Post" he needed me to play behind his vocals. The 11/8 time signature was new to me; I'd no idea it was a 6/8 - 5/8 phrase, but theory was the least of the problem. I wasn't connecting with the PATTERN of the chordal parts. He says, "I'll bet you can't play the same thing twice!!!!!". That one statement turned my playing around...... Years later, I'd formed a quite successful 6-piece band with Latin percussion section and keyboardist. As leader, I had to be as close to perfect as possible on rhythm guitar. I added a 2nd guitarist...... he could play terrifying lead, as I'd known since the 70's. However, I'd eventually discover he (and at least one other 2nd guitarist) had no interest in carrying rhythm guitar parts. While singing, on a gig, on a tune with fairly involved chord comping like Marvin Gaye's "What's Goin' On?", I stopped playing the chords and noticed....... he'd been * faking the rhythm guitar parts with volume turned all the way down. Apparently rhythm guitar was below him...... not so uncommon, actually. He's got no idea what he's missing. What did come from that was a fresh new appreciation for rhythm guitar...... :) ON MANY gigs I carried the entire guitar/keyboard parts and loved it..... all coming out of "playing the same thing twice" :) * Better to play nothing than it is to play it wrong!

I started 4 years ago in freshman year, learned G, C, and D from my first guitar teacher and he taught me personally some music theory and for the past 4 years I've been doing everything I can to not improve my playing, note holding, or anything in general with the act of playing a guitar but what I have done is expand my knowledge of theory to try and be better than I was yesterday. Now that I've discovered this channel I have very high hopes at cracking the wall holding me back 👏👏 you have that feeling of teaching that reminds me of my old teacher

Tomo is the real deal. So genuine. My goal is to improve my chops and get SHREDDED. Want to internalize the guitar so it becomes second nature. Wild what you can do with just three chords and "dynamics". Tomo has used that word in other videos and I just finally snapped to it. Actually looked it up: "In music, the dynamics of a piece is the variation in loudness between notes or phrases." Great lesson.

First time I came upon your channel I thought you were from Holland as you're style of playing and your appearance( that video you only filmed yourself untill the waist, no face..) felt and looked so much like the many guitarist we find here ( in The Netherlands) of Indonesian descendance, from The Molukken ( group of Islands) to be exact. I was really quiet sure about that; rythmic , melody and phrasing wise. So I was rather surprised at first to find out you are from Japan ( Island of great musicians of the like of Ryuichi Sakomoto) Anyway, most of all , like so many, I realy come to appreciate your channel , your approach to teaching!!Thanks very much for helping us and all the inspiration you provide for so many. At least for me; IT BECAME A PLEASURE AGAIN TO GRAB MY GUITAR ., first thing in the morning! Plus, finally I found myself a real Berklee-teacher!!

Hello, TOMO. I love your friendly, stress-free teaching style w/ excellent views of fingers on the frets. Yes, the progression that begins w/ 1/4 notes down, then enriched w/ skips and upbeats, plus 1/8 notes is cool. Start the groove and stretch it! Complex enough to keep beginners entertained and going to the next level of skill. That pattern is rather like what Luke Combs uses in country western style. And yes, get students interested in tone, the element we spend much effort on refining in acoustic. My favorite guitar is an Alvarez Artwood 360, all mahogany open pore finish, with light gauge Martin MA540 strings. Finally, attitude matters; and you display genuine pleasure in even the simple things demonstrated. Thank you for being generous with your time. I spent a year mostly on rhythm. Now I am often working on a D'Angelico Fulton 12 string to develop my flat-picking, arpeggio, and movable chords. A lighter touch often, like Neil Young 1978 Comes A Time album. Peace and best wishes.

My goal for this year is to take my playing to the next level by learning theory. ive been playing guitar for many years but havent progressed much because I never got serious about learning music/guitar theory. I thought that the more songs I knew the more tabs I learned the better guitar player I would become, I spent many years just doodling with my guitar playing notes and learning chords and songs but not understating how or why they sounded good together and feeling bored and stuck without any improvement in my playing until finally in the last few months I decided to start taking lessons and reading books on theory and now things are starting to fall into place I learned more in the last couple of months then I had in the last 5 years.. im a long way from Berklee but im ok with that and im feeling motivated and excited to learn more about music and I have you and your videos to thank. Discovering your channel and your videos got me motivated to learn about music so thank you very much and I look forward to all your future videos and lessons you post.

@TomoFujitaMusic Thanks for bringing joy and delight to learning! Whether intentional or not, your progression in the strumming exercise and playing with rhythm, palm muting and adding notes (the 7th?) to the chords is inspiring. It demonstrates how everything starts with the basics and how to build on those to create. So fun! If I had to narrow down to a single overarching goal for 2021, it would be to develop confidence in my playing and ability to express myself through music. As for something specific and actionable, I would say more effective left hand (right hand for me because I'm a lefty) usage: adding suspensions, pull-offs, hammer ons, walking bass line, etc. I primarily listen to folk/acoustic musicians like Josh Ritter, Trevor Hall, John Butler, etc. and they incorporate a lot of left hand into their playing to create unique sounds and communicate mood. It can take a basic chord progression and turn it into something moving and magical. Thanks!

I think one of my biggest limiters is dealing with arm and finger pain. I warm up, stretch and try to do small sessions and take regular breaks and try to learn the best playing ergonomics and adapt them to my body and style. I feel like I and many others could benefit from learning better playing habits like ergonomics. How to better fret those power cords, fingering, posture and maybe even checking your guitar setup isn't causing you more pain. I know I press too hard, but how do I get out of the habit? I like the chromatic excercise with emphasis on good tone. Smiling even better! 😁 With the cold , dealing with the pain and discomfort has really come to the forefront of my playing needs. 🎸❄💪👋 Thank you Maestro Tomo!

Love what you're doing Tomo! It's also great to see you've more than tripled in subscribers since I've been watching your channel! To answer your question (and feed the engagement algorithm, haha!): one of my goals this year is to write more consistently so I have a larger portfolio of good recordings I can use to get work. I'd also like to learn a bit about video editing and streaming so I can share what I have to offer like you are! Right now I'm only reaching the 20-30 students I zoom with any given week, haha. From you, I'd love to see more advanced videos on rhythm guitar and harmony: let's get into some riff-writing! It would be really cool to explore the harmony of 70s/80s city-pop too. I hear a lot of influence from Steely Dan and Quincy Jones, but that style still has its own harmonic dialect in the way a lot of those composers use modulations and arrange their strings and I'd love to hear your perspective on that. Cheers and happy new year!

Would you know how can one approach adding a quote from some famous song when soloing? Also, teach us how to wedge a popular melody in for a minor or a major flavour progression. Maybe even for a diminished progression? I love for example how Santana played the Beatles "Fool on the Hill" melody during the solo on "Incident in Neshabour" (triple live in Japan LP "Lotus", 1974). @TomoFujitaMusic Thanks! I'm not sure how to explain it right. Maybe you have some music in your mind playing that you want to express through the guitar, but you don't know how to interpret it. Similar to photography when you see the scene, you notice the composition and vibrancy of colors. So you compose the photo based on how your mind interprets.
