Your stoke is still so infectious (in a good way ;) ). I think you can extrapolate the bouldering "try hard" to routes in a sense. We often calculate that we have 3 (or 4 or whatever) "good" goes on a sport route in a day. Maybe only 2 if it is a mega-endurance long route. Anyway, it seems we always play it a bit safe and try to save energy on the first go so that we can have a great second go if things go wrong. Then they go wrong and you climb poorly on the 2nd go because now your down to the last really good go. By the 3rd go you're tired and doubting if you'll be able to send so it becomes the "fitness burn" and you don't care what you have left in the tank after it. So you go to war on the route and even though you're way more tired than on the first go, you fight so much harder that you match your highpoint or even better, but still don't send. Then you think to yourself, "Hell had I tried that hard on the first go, I'd not have needed any other goes, because I would have sent." LOL. But it's always a risk to dig that deeply on the 1st go, so the process gets repeated over and over until you have so much fitness and familiarity with the route that you've beat it into submission. Climbing is tricky, good thing we have the sunset crew to help each other.

100% agree with you there Todd and it's actually an idea I've been plating around with quite a bit over the last few years. It's crazy what our minds and bodies can and won't do. You can be sure it'll be a video some day!

I like how you guys go "no chalk, probably a fa", whereas in fountainebleau , even when I cleaned a mossy rock in a little known area I still was like "yeah somebody probably did this before"
@TomOHalloranAus2 жыл бұрын
There's certainly areas where both scenarios are the case. Bungonia is incredibly quiet and underdeveloped. A small guide book and only a few climbers who developed. It's not too hard to find out what has and hasn't been done
@herrar65952 жыл бұрын
@@TomOHalloranAus What makes it so hard in fb is how long people have been climbing there for, how many and how chaotic the documentation is... Like even if something is in a random quiet area where you can climb for 3 days straingt without seing anyone and it obviously has not been climbed these last two years, you just don´t know. Sorta sad, but also kinda cool

For sure. The history in that forest runs so so deep it’s almost impossible to ever get a grip of what’s happened. There’s a magic to that. And a liberating freeness to take away the FA side of things and to just go and enjoy climbing 😀

Sunset crew! "Try hard" is my favourite aspect of bouldering! I find board climbing really drags this out of me too. Had a problem in the Lakes where I was tinkering with beta for over an hour, and all it took in the end was to just actually f@kin try harder! Cool vids, as always!

I love the « try hard » of bouldering. 100% commitment. How do you combined this attitude with injury prevention? Do you have rule you follow ? I have injured myself twice when outdoor bouldering (pulley), once on the send try. Thank you so much Jon

That’s the balance. My quick 2 cents is warm up 100% properly and know there will always be another attempt. Don’t be afraid to let go if a finger, shoulder etc is feeling vulnerable. It’s not worth it!
