I hate to sound like a broken record, but this song is so so good. Every time I hear it I hear more depth & subtlety. Just beautiful. As someone said earlier, my favorite version of my favorite Dylan song. Only a small handful of covers best the original of any song. This is one of them.

Yes Lucas, it is a song of beautiful sadness that I've carried with me for over half a century. Most recently I sang it A cappella at a reading of my book, "This Singin' Thing" and the effect on the audience was still magical after all these years. That you found it so moving is a tribute to both Bobby and that special moment in time.

A song I come back to again and again. John's cover is so full of heartfelt emotion, as though he had just said goodbye to a dear friend. Dylan's was raw emotion; John's is tempered by a lifetime of loves and loss, more resigned than raw, as though he's been here before. Keep truckin', John

In the end it is the truth that produces the music of the spheres, the heavenly tones. It's never been about range or vocal gymnastics. Even a pitch perfect opera singer belting to the rafters ring hollow if the singer is not connected to the meaning of the language. I don't know this musician yet but he sure sings the truth! It's so very beautiful!

Never liked Dylan covers too much.John,for you i make an exception. Your version is great stuff ! Ever tried Blind willie McTell ? Good luck from Gemany and keep on Bobin`
@johnwinntheoldtroubadour8 жыл бұрын
+carstenen That you make an exception for this old guy's singing of Bobby's songs is heart warming. Have not tried " Blind Willy" but back in the 1950s I sang it's melodic predecessor "Saint James Infirmary" I'll take a look at it again. Next up is a new video of "Love is just a Four Letter Word." Very different energy and melodic requirements from "Tomorrow is a Long Time."

@J. Dallison Mr. Dallison thanks for your comment. It would be a daunting task. The melody is easy 'cause Boby took St. Jams infirmary for his model. Specifically as he heard it sung by Dave Van Ronk and Ramblin' Jack. The difference in the two songs was that it was the first time we heard his gift for other worldly metaphor in his telling of the life of Blind Willy. FYI, Mr. Carsternen has since become a frequent commentor on this old troubadours musical musings.

@@johnwinntheoldtroubadour that's a fantastically diplomatic way of saying he plagiarized the melody, haha love it John. Greetings from Liverpool, that's cool you actually met Dylan back in his village days .

@@mrjasondylan Thanks Jason, Bobby and I were friends back then and I knew his lady "Suze" as well so I had some insight into his feelings.. It's great to hear a voice from Liverpool. At 88 I'm still at it. My channel "The Old Troubadour" includes a song I wrote last year for the 50th anniversary of "Imagine". The title is "Imagine if John Lennon's Here Today" Here's the link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y3uzh56YfraFhNU

Mr John Winn, what a breath-taking rendition. Your singing embodies the fragility of the innocence of the first-love relation, when we are convinced that eternity is on our side only to wake up one day when she or he has gone and tomorrow is a very long time indeed ! For the record: It is the one Dylan song that Elvis covered. His version is great. But no cover can surpass yours.

This is one of my favorite songs ever and you truly did it justice. It's been on repeat since I found your cover but I don't know why I do this to myself. I can't listen without crying like a baby

I understand your feelings. I've been singing this song for over half a century and I'm still deeply moved by it. On a more cheerful note I've just finished a new video of another of Bobby's iconic songs. I sing it in a style well suited to my elder status and emphasize his great lyrics. kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZpDcq2xui7eUh7s

Great Song. Here are the lyrics. If today was not a endless highway If tonight was not a crooked trail If tomorrow wasn't such a long time Then lonesome would mean nothing to you at all Yes and only if my own true love was waitin' And if I could hear her heart a-softly poundin' Yes, only if she was lyin' by me Then I'd lie in my bed once again. I can't see my reflection in the waters I can't speak the sounds that show no pain I can't hear the echo of my footsteps Or remember the sound of my own name Yes, and only if my own true love was waitin' And if I could hear her heart a-softly poundin' Only if she was lyin' by me Then I'd lie in my bed once again. There's beauty in the silver, singin' river There's beauty in the rainbow in the sky But none of these and nothing else can touch the beauty That I remember in my true love's eyes Yes and only if my own true love was waitin' If I could hear her heart a softly poundin' Yes and only if she was lyin' by me, I would lie in my bed once again

Well Steve, you've got him right here and I thank you for finding and viewing Bobby' great song. i also have my old folksingers version of Mr. Tambourine Man and Love is just a four letter word on youtube under my name. My website is www.johnwinnmusic.com Thanks again I really appreciate your comment

John Winn I feel very honoured that you've replied John. I love your voice and couldn't find your music on iTunes here in the UK. I think that I was born just one generation too late. I have see Bobby several times over the last 30 years and recently managed to catch Joan Baez in concert whilst I was living in France a couple of years back. I think today's music lacks the sincerity of the folk days and so when I find a revelation such as your music I am so pleased. I've just come back from visiting my family in Southern Ireland where we passed a few Guinness filled nights listening to Irish folk. Thank you once again for your reply and my thoughts are with you and my other American friends over the next week or so with your almost surreal choices you have to make. God bless you.

Thanks Steve. I and all the other singers in the troubadour tradition are honoured by folks like you who listen to our music. With encouragement like yours I'll continue to sing as long as the Heavenly spirits permit. Here's a song that I wrote I think you'll enjoy. It's on youtube and you'll find I it listed as: John Winn "With the Comin' of the Mornin.."
