That is my mom at time frame 1:25. No kidding, she used to work as a mermaid there. My Mom's nephew just sent me the link. I can't believe he ran across this and recognized her. We used to love this ride!

They should do this again, to be honest. It sounds like a fun job -- a lot of the hazards from back then are solvable solveable these days. They could be creative & put covers over the girls' resting areas so they aren't cooking like an egg on a frying pan, for starters... Especially if they just don't do it in summer (cause here it gets too hot even with covers!). Maybe to promote the Little Mermaid live-action they're apparently still doing. I would want to apply!

It would be cool, there's alot of professional mermaid swimmers too now. I just think the chlorine and water temperature may still be a problem.
@christianablackburn4 жыл бұрын
Some of the problems were guest trying to climb over the rocks to get to them, and I guess some of the mermaids almost got sucked into the propellers of the submarines (which, while technically fixable, could easily cost hundreds of millions of dollars depending on how they go about it)
@glasseyemolly12 жыл бұрын
The mermaids look amazing and you must be so proud of your mom to be a part of such a iconic part of Disney history but it also seems really dangerous to have live performers so close to the workings of the ride. I would be very interested to hear more about her experiences as a mermaid and a cast member in the early days of the park.
@dcmetroareaman12 жыл бұрын
Yep, Dad says that’s Mom in the Video. It’s had to be done about in or before 1962 (before I was born he says). they only did the live mermaids the open season of the ride. Suction of the propellers made it somewhat dangerous, if you weren’t a strong swimmer
@dramakittymeow11 жыл бұрын
They only stopped doing it because the mermaids were taking too tough a beating from the sun and chlorine. Besides, it's Finding Nemo now instead of just a normal submarine voyage
@garcia20710 жыл бұрын
I heard one of the reasons they got rid of the live Mermaids was that men kept jumping into the lagoon to reach the mermaids.
@glowsnipes8 жыл бұрын
+Jennifer Garcia I heard that too. Creepy ass men. Ruining everything like always.
@LivinBeautifully8 жыл бұрын
+Jennifer Garcia That only happened once allegedly and no one knows exactly why they got rid of the mermaids, although there was word that there was concern over too much chlorine in the water and probably liability issues with the submarine propellers.
@Idkwhattoput-p2s8 жыл бұрын

Former Disneyland mermaid, Edie, shares what it was like to don a tail and swim in the happiest place on earth: Each time a submarine passed, we dove underwater to frolic about, hang upside down by spinning our tails, and to wave at curious faces plastered against the portholes. With practice we learned to smile without emitting bubble screens that would distort our faces into repulsive creatures from the deep. For all this we were paid $1.85 an hour - a whopping net of $59.55 each week.

People jumping into the lagoon doesn't sound like a legit reason to shut it down. I think if they really tried, it could have been prevented lol.
@Moonbunbunn7 жыл бұрын
Captain Howdy I heard it's cause there was a ton of chlorine in therr
@sonozaki00006 жыл бұрын
It wasn't. Someone only jumped in once (a rowdy sailor from a nearby naval base). It was mostly because of health issues for the girls: the high chlorine levels were killing their hair & making them sick, and they were getting sunburns. You gotta remember most of the girls were technically still kids (teenagers), so that's pretty bad. It wasn't mentioned as a reason, but I also feel as if the danger of the propellers from the submarines may have been part of it. One of the girls said it was so dangerous that they could actually feel it sucking them in if they got a lil too close. It creeped some of them out. Also the fumes from it were gross.
