Can I just say, from a veterinary perspective, seeing someone on a farm actually using a new needle is truly lovely. The number of times i've seen Heptavac/cal-mag/etc. needles reused until they're literally so blunt they can't penetrate skin any more (not to mention bent and covered in rust/shit).

Ok, My Dear Tom, I am truly impressed with your veterinarian skills which I am sure are essential in your position as a farmer! I am a nurse and of course I cringe a bit with bolus' being injected into an animal in the middle of a pasture although we just can't have a fresh, clean, semi-sterile room at the end of the barn! Lol! No seriously, I was so impressed with the way u got all three bolus' in so and time is of the essence! Low Calcium can just cause a multitude of serious issues and you got those meds in like BAM!!! And don't beat yourself up at all for missing out on a prophylactic dose the night before. All ended up well and you will remember this next time because of this time. You rock as a farmer, you are a very skilled and humble farmer and a wonderful son as well who always gives due to your very skilled Father. I am ever so grateful that Our HoofMD sent me over here! Love u both so much!!!

Glad to see the channel growing so fast and that you put the calcium into the vein first that's they way i was taught by multiple vets as i am training to be a vet, just a suggestion for improvement i was taught to give 40 cc's of magnesium under the skin on the left side as well just in case tetany would occur, perhaps this could also be given as a preventative. Great vlog Tom keep up the great work.

Good Afternoon Tom Another great vid and very interesting I lost a 1st time Dexter heifer with 4 month old calf at foot this winter due to milk fever ,she showed no signs what so ever despite having access to a mag lick. I went down to the yard at 3am to shut a banging gate and she was fine eating hay with the others and when I checked her at 7am she was dead ☹️ I’ve only been keeping cattle for a couple of years so I was worried that I had missed the signs but seeing your vid and your cows symptoms I’m confident that I didn’t. It either came on her really quickly or she just didn’t show any signs. Keep up the good work 👍

Was this "diagnosis" confirmed by a vet ? I am asking because only one in 20 cows die from milk fever (I.e. the mortality is approx. 5%). And usually not without signs. Also, not in such a short period of time or as a sudden death! From your very short description of the case (or rather lack thereof! ) something else has happened.
@lyonoo
@lyonoo 6 жыл бұрын
Daniel Culpepper I did get a PM on her to find the cause of death and it came back as grass tetany / milk fever to the surprise of my vet. She had access to mag licks so I thought she would be ok, my vet advised me to feed the rest of the a couple of scoops of dairy nuts ( with mag in them ) each day to make sure they were getting enough mag. Thanks for your interest

Hey Tom. Loving the videos from a fellow farmer here in New Zealand. I have one problem with your video. You should NEVER put calcium in the milk vein, only ever in the jugular. Causing an infection by injecting into milk vein can cause cows to lose their milk. Serious problem. Go for jugular anymore. Only way you get faster at it is to practice.

Maybe you should try to use a low calcium ration in the dry off period ? Or an anionic mix in dry off 🙈 if you want to keep working with grass. There are a lot of things you can do preventive without needing a cal bolus.

Tom, I had a Jersey that was very genetically disposed to "milk fever". Her mother required two and most often three bottles of calcium (IV) to get back on her feet. Knowing this I'd done a TON of research. The minute my girls quit milking, they are off alfalfa and only get a good grass (meadow grass) hay. She never went down from milk fever. I know you probably know this but I will say it here for those that don't know. Milk Fever 101 😄 A cow's body unlike a human is meant to store and then give up its calcium upon demand. She replenishes the calcium through eating. Alfalfa is rich in calcium and a lactating cow gets use to that plentiful supply however, it is not enough for a birthing cow. When her body reaches out to her bones for calcium, a cow fed constantly on alfalfa has not stored enough. When fed a good quality grass hay, the calcium is in its proper place. Immediately upon birthing, she goes back to alfalfa. The risk for a heifer and even the second calf is low but goes up from there. I just love bovine science, don't you?!!
