I have a Barista Touch Impress ordered that will be here Wednesday. My biggest reasons for choosing this over a super automatic are ease of cleaning the milk system and real espresso.

I used to have a Sage Barista Pro machine but I struggled to achieve good results. I could not settle the grinder well (I even tried to change internal grinder settings). I was not able to pull out a good shot. The ratio and the timing was off the the coffee did not taste the way I wanted. I just recently bought Delinghi Magnifica (thanks to your recommendation) and I am super happy with the choice! It is a perfect machine for someone who has no skills like myself. I mostly use ‘my late’ option, as I prefer to have a bit more milk in my drink. It does a really good job and I finally can enjoy a tasty coffee! ❤ I would recommend Delonghi Magnifica over Sage (unless someone has some good barista skills).
@utiuandy99 Жыл бұрын
I personally disagree. Yes you do need to learn how to make proper espresso and while it may take some time I think it’s worth it. Now I’m not so sure the sage is a good option, at least not one that has an incorporated grinder, but this one particularly that is shown in the video should be pretty good as it has a nicer grinder than the barista pro. Whenever I drink coffee from an automated machine I can’t seem to enjoy it much, even with the magnifica. It lacks the body and proper taste of the coffee that you put in it.

Great comparison! My old man recently bought the EVO, and it does a very decent job for a super automatic. He's also very fond of making a long black on it (haven't tried that particular one myself yet). I'd still prefer non-automatics, but I agree with you, I can certainly see how someone want a machine that simply delivers at the push of a button. No judgment from me there.
@coffeeandshots Жыл бұрын
I think a second video where you find the brew default brew ratio on the superauto, and tweak it to match the manual espresso machine, and then comparing the result would make an interesting video. Alternatively, you could try to dial the superauto as best as you can tweaking both ratio, dose and grind. Those settings are often hidden under unintuitive names such as strong, intense for dose, and ratio ofc is often hidden under something like "ristretto".

@Aerieudite9 ай бұрын
Excellent comparison. We've had the Barista Touch Impress for about a week now, replacing a Jura E8. For us the Breville is twice the machine at about half the price. Some points you didn't address: 1 - If you select Americano or a Tall Black, you can press the Brew and Hot Water icons in either order. The Breville will complete the operation for whichever button you pressed first, then immediately proceed to the other. So whether your machine says Americano (like ours) or Tall Black (like the one in the video), pressing the hot water icon first will make a Tall Black (hot water, then espress), whereas pressing the Espresso Brew icon first will produce an Americano (espresso, then hot water). 2 - One of THE best features of the Breville is cleaning the milk system. To make a milk drink on the Breville, whether auto or manually, just pour fresh milk into the pitcher, steam and froth, pour into the espresso cup, and finally dump and rinse the pitcher and you're done. You didn't address it, but I suspect DeLonghi Evo milk system has to be thoroughly and carefully cleaned after each session. 3 - Cleaning the brew group on the Breville is easy - it doesn't have one. There's just way less to go wrong.

I have the Breville Touch non Impress model. Great machine, I just haven’t been able to dial the expresso in where it’s not bitter after playing with it for about a month. Plus taming and leveling is a little work. So I just picked up an Evo to play with today. I haven’t made a cup yet since I got it home late, but I’ve watched a few videos. It has a cleaning but you hit for the milk frother, and it just dispenses hot water out of the wand since thats where it normally dispenses hot water. The milk pitcher can go back in fridge or you can wash it just like you can wash the Breville one. Really nothing to it.

I've had the Breville for about three months, and I love it. I still do a manual pour-over for my first cup of the day, but the little Breville is so fun to use and so fast in turning out a great americano, I got hooked on it right away. I never thought I could live with one of these machines, and didn't actually expect to keep the Touch Impress, but now I rely on it. I'll try your long black, but except for a very occasional oat milk latte, I only use the machine to pull espresso shots for americanos. I find that if I use my separate kettle for the hot water, I get precise control over temperature and I don't have to fill the reservoir very often. Also, I track the weight of extractions, so I can add the amount of hot water necessary to get the result I want in the cup, and the Breville is amazingly consistent, never varying by more than 2-3 grams. Very neat little machine. Thanks for the pro tips!

I run both a Barista Express and a 2017 Magnifica. And right enough the 2017 brew unit looks exactly like that in the Evo. I hope the Evo's electronics are better: I just tried to programme my old Maggie to produce a true ristretto, but telling it to stop the pour at ~8g still produced 20g of peely-wally fluid in the cup, and a repeat shot produced 25. If trains ran like this they'd be going through the buffers and across the street twice a week. Still, it's good enough for visitors and breakfast cappuccini. I wouldn't mind an Impressa, but with one exception the extra functionality isn't worth the price difference. I'll take the Impressa's steam wand over the BE's any day - as soon as you start heating the milk it gets caked and it's a bugger to clean.

Oh yes, unfortunately DeLonghi uses the same amount of coffee for the single cup as for the double cup. To make a double coffee you have to shoot two single shots!
@David-dt6qq Жыл бұрын
I do have a question. Breville says to use a single basket for a single cup. I assume it believes that most people will appreciate that taste the most. if you use a single basket on this Breville, and then compare it to a single shot on a super automatic (such as the Magnifico or Gaggia or Phillips), why would coffee taste better different? Both are 15 bar machines, same amount of grounds, same amount of water? I assume because the super automatics might pour faster than the 25-30 seconds with the breville, using more pressure? Is that the difference? I know some super automatics like the Gaggia academia will even allow you to vary the water flow rate as well now. this would be an interesting video!
@TomsCoffeeCorner Жыл бұрын
@@David-dt6qq Well, it's a common misconception that superautomatics extract at 15 bar. It's more like 3-4 bar. They have a different over pressure valve that routes the water off at an earlier pressure. Therefore, a Breville will extract at let's say 9 bar, and a superautomatic at 3x less pressure. I find there is a difference in those extractions. That being said, I haven't tried an Academia. That might be designed differently.

I have used both these types of machines extensively and agree with the review assessments. The periodic cleanup of the fully automatic is a pain, removing and cleaning the engine and cleaning out the spilled grounds inside it. Also the automatic needs more flushing of old coffee residuals if you do not use it daily. I also needed to set it on a double shot to get enough extraction. For showing off the milk drinks, you can get dual-walled borosilicate coffee cups that also do a good job of keeping the drink warm.

Q/ If the Delonghi puck is ~10 grams, and the Breville’s ~16-18 grams as you said, then why make the shot volume lengths equal for the espresso shot (first experiment)? Wouldn’t the Delonghi’s taste obviously be less complex - as its 10 gram puck would be relatively diluted - compared to Breville’s 16-18 gram puck, if you use the same volume extraction?
@TomsCoffeeCorner7 ай бұрын
You're right that the Magnifica will be watered down in comparison. I try to get the ratio lower on the superautomatics, but they often have a minimum amount that they pump, which pushes them over the 2:1 ratio. I think the minimum on this one is 40ml, if I remember right.

I found that these are all based on Keurig machines and modified to have basically a permanent "basket". So they are quick and make a reasonable version of that style of drink, same as a Keurig machine, (maybe slightly better) but they are not actual espresso machines. I think he is dead-on in his 2-3 bar estimation. To make good espresso, you need to punch them hard enough to make them give up their magic essence, but not actually crush them and send them to hospital :) But being tough and stubborn, 2-3 bar is just them ignoring you.

I have the Magnifica Plus and am not impressed with the machine. (I used to have the Breville, and it’s a better choice) . You may think a semi-automatic machine has more steps when operating than a fully automatic one. The Magnifica Plus milk container is like a Lego puzzle of five pieces that you need to disassemble when cleaning. For instance, if you make an XL large latte, it will consume the entire container of milk; if you make a medium latte, it will consume almost half, and you can store the milk in the fridge for 48 hours as I notice the milk starts getting a funny taste (2% milk filter) after that time. You will not turn on the dishwasher to wash one item, meaning you will spend time frequently cleaning this item manually. With the Breville, you wash the cup and wipe the wand. The Magnifica Plus dispenses water when turned on or off and cleans after milk, filling the bottom tray faster. If you don’t clean the bottom tray frequently, it will start to smell. (I keep a mug handy for this operation to avoid the extra cleaning step of the bottom tray) The Magnifica Plus has a coffee option that tries to emulate a drip coffee option, but no matter what setting you adjust, the coffee always comes out too watery or with an intense, burnt flavor. I have tried all the settings for this coffee option and have had no luck getting a good cup. Do not expect the espresso extraction to be as dense and flavorful as the higher-end machines; it is just decent. I don’t call it "Crema" because "coffee cream" typically doesn't contain actual cream; it’s just scummy foam (Coffee Crema is just a marketing word made up by Giovanni Gaggia). That said, it does produce good foam when using quality beans. The coffee temperature is suitable (it comes out hot), and the milk frother works well. I like the drink sizes, and if you want a bigger size, there is a prompt at the end of the pouring that allows you to add more. I am still deciding whether to keep this machine. It’s overkill for a single person to use and a hassle to maintain and operate just for a cup of coffee.

The issue is that the grinder is.. kind of meh, IMO. A few people I know who have these have a dedicated grinder and just use the tamping feature. And report much more consistent results. I really kind of wish they make an impress model without the grinder. My choice in the end was the dual boiler because quality is key to me and grinding out a specific grind is almost a ritual at this point. Check out his video on the dual boiler and see that with a good grinder with a scale in it, he's getting fantastically repeatable results.

@@1shawnv1 The issue is the feed mechanism and how the beans enter it, which results in the output being in clumps/bursts. While the automatic grinder and auto-dosing works well enough, it's also a very pricey machine to get all of that and still have a poor adjustment wheel and fiddly to clean design. Versus a good grinder that will last half a dozen machines. I went with what I did because I need to do two drinks for myself and my son every morning. But for one person? Even a little Gaggia Classic or Bambino Plus and a good grinder saves you a lot of money and gets better results. Note that the Baratza ESP is not my recommendation for a - step up to the 270 as timed dosing is important if you don't want to be weighing every shot like some chemist. :)

Is there a way to make frothed milk only on the De’Longhi Evo?
@TomsCoffeeCorner Жыл бұрын
Well, you can select cappuccino, and then abort it after it's made the milk. Or you can choose MyLatte and ground coffee without adding coffee, like mentioned on another video by a commenter, and then you'll also get steamed milk. 👍🏻

I have bought Barista Touch Impress (BTI) few days ago, to replace my Delonghi Dedica. So far, I am kind of puzzled with dialing it in. BTI is repeatedly complaining with the too-short / too-fast extraction message. Once you change the grind size, BTI is asking you to "grind more" message repeatedly. I really miss the simplicity of Dedica, where I can program the duration of the extraction and just be done with it. Btw - have you used single or dual walled dual basket, in your video? Wondering, if I am ever becoming a barista, should return the machine, or practice some more 🙂

I currently have a Dedica and want the Touch Impress. The Delonghi would be more convenient for my wife though because she can’t work the Dedica. The issue you’re describing would keep things complicated for her. I’m not sure which one I want. But the intensity is probably going to sway me in the Impress’ direction.
@TomsCoffeeCorner Жыл бұрын
It might just take some time to get it dialed in with your first beans. I never got the message, but I didn't use their dialing in wizard. I like to dial in myself. But anyway, I used the single walled non-pressurized baskets. It's a nice machine, but does take some getting used to, what with all its features. Cheers!
@PetrKrenzelok Жыл бұрын
@@harold7239 It is not easy to replace Dedica, as I was used to the cca 250 ml coffee. But - I did it simple (and most probably the wrong) way - held the button and programmed in the time of extraction. My Lavaza coffee was nice bitter for me. Now trying the same coffee with BTI, it has more acidity. There definitely is a difference of over-axtraction against adding more hot water (Americano). I have few more days to decide, if I keep BTI. Still some experiments to do.

For those who likes to MAKE coffee, breville would fit best. For those who like just drink, it would be easy the Delonghi. Maybe an superautomatic machine fits well in some kind of medium office with different people. Thanks Tom! see you around!

what’s a bar?

A unit of pressure. For reference, a bike tire has 3.5 bar. Espresso should be extracted at 8-9 bar.

unfair comparison . you should have got primadonna soul as it is the best in delonghi line and defiantly can create real crema with 19 bar and top grinder built in to give you fine ground coffe perfect for espresso and as good as espresso machine with bean adapt technology and Thermoblock technology which keeps the water at the exact temperature required to brew a perfect Espresso. It is very expensive though
@TomsCoffeeCorner Жыл бұрын
I don't know. AFAIK, all Delonghi superautomatics use the same brew group, and ceramic grinder, leading to a similar result. I think the price difference is for the different design aesthetic and drink automations. Cheers!

The magnifica s is 15 bars, probably the same through out their models and yes the crema is fake just like when using a pressurized basket with a manual.
@TomsCoffeeCorner Жыл бұрын
It's not really 15 bars. It would blast right through the coffee puck, lol. It's limited by a different kind of OPV than an espresso machine, which aims for 3-4 bars.

Haha, don't be silly. The Evo doesn't grind fine enough, or allow a large enough puck to provide resistance up to the claimed 15 bar. Cheers!
