just about the most perfect song to get those emotions going - Powell has that innocent give- it - all-american voice - utterly stunning. this guy is so under-rated its criminal. you only have to look at who wanted to back him on this song to see how revered he is over here.

It's one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard. Nothing tops the recorded version, on his Lp 'Time Again'. This particular recording of it is too self aware, it doesn't have the urgency or energy of that version for me, and yet of course it's a virtual hymn, as close to a religious song as I will ever get. The first time I heard it my Dad, now gone, played it to me, and I have to admit to crying, just out of pure reaction to the spirit of the song. It's remained in my top Ten songs of all time since, and I own over 4000 records and about 600 cds. I listen constantly, but nothing comes close, most of the time. I was so impressed at the time that I wrote to Dirk who was then playing in a Cajun band that had contacts online I found, I wrote two pages of thoughts and comments, rambling probably incoherently about how impressed I was and how important I thought the song was and what it meant to me personally. He was kind enough to write more back to me, then I had written him and for a short time we exchanged emails. It's truly a song from 'God'. Utterly sublime.

I went out late one night The moon and stars were shining bright Storm come up and the trees come down Tell you boys I was waterbound Waterbound on Lettergesh shore Waves were rising to my door Roofs come off and the wind do blow Waterbound nowhere to go Cars went crashing off old pier wall Sea did howl and the gulls did call Beach washed bare on a winter night Water dashing t’would catch the light Black dog barking in the back of my car Rusty door and an old guitar the house is gone I lost my boat Waterbound and I can't stay afloat Its i'm gone and I won't be back Don't believe me count my tracks The Sea is rough and the sea is wide I'll meet you boys on the other side So say my name and don't forget Water still ain't got me yet Nothing but I'm bound to roam Waterbound and I can't get home

The "magic" of a studio recording comes from engineering. The magic of a live performance is the dynamic interaction between each player and the music, and that is something that cannot be reproduced in an engineered recording, in fact much of the time sound engineering is about getting rid of it. Old Time/Trad Country/Celtic music like this is alive and constantly changing, as Ralph Blizzard said "I never play a tune the same way once".

I went out late one night The moon and the stars were shining bright A storm come up and the trees come down I'll tell you boys I was waterbound. Waterbound on a stranger's shore The river rising to my door It carried my home to the field below I'm waterbound, nowhere to go. I carved my name on an old barn wall Or no one would know I was there at all Stable's dry on a winter's night You turn your head you could see the light. There's a black cat crawling on an old boxcar A rusty door and a falling star Ain't got a dime in my nation's sack I'm waterbound and I can't get back. Yes, I'm goin' and I won't be back If you don't believe me, count my tracks The river's long and the river's wide I'm meet you boys on the other side. So say my name and don't forget The water still ain't got me yet Ain't nothin' but I'm bound to roam I'm waterbound and I can't get home.

I can sing decent.....................but how did you learn to play the tune. And what instrument, ole-time banjo, guitar, dobro, whistle, mandolin.......................they're all in the mix you know, among some others. Is there a site like You Tube that could help someone like me......................I play guitar. I'm OK but nothing special.
@johnwise76938 жыл бұрын
I play it on guitar. I find that if you can pick the melody out as single notes,you can usually figure out the chords. If you google "waterbound dirk powell chords" you will find several sites that have the lyrics and chords,though maybe not in the same key as in the video. Dirk is playing in the key of E. It starts with the relative minor in E,C#minor,which is a bit of a bitch to play. The easy thing to do is capo at the fourth fret and play an Am shape,which will in effect be C#minor. With your capo at the 4th fret,the chord shapes in sequence would be Am,C,G,F,and back to Am. Let me know if you have further questions.
