The easiest way to fix the flickering problem is set camera to 25 or 50 frames per second. As the lights are running at 50 hz. Biggest mistake for many people in uk, who hear specs from our American cousins (who run at 60hz) then wonder why they have the flicker issue 😆 always stay at 50 or 25 frames per second or PAL standard. America can use 30 or 60 frame per second or NTSC standard. Hope that makes sense. Congratulations 🥳

Also Tom, fluorescent lights are not so good for health reasons, let alone filming purposes, etc. May I respectfully recommend that they be replaced with LED lighting (which may also reduce the power bill)?

+1 from an American cousin. What the OP wrote you should indeed sort your photography issues out. As a second generation, second-rate student of photography i can confirm, lol. If my mother were still living, she would give me better advice to give you. Then again, as a book lover herself, she would as likely have already put her 2 cents in the jar.

Congrats. The issue with the camera is indeed the frame rate. I would get new lights, just because these kind will mess up footage and they look a little too clinical, however a quick and easy fix is to just change he frame rate.

If they are fluros (doubtful really) then they can give off a bit of UV which might not be great for the books. If not (and they probably aren't) you might still consider replacing them with a nice high cri (colour rendering index) or warm white led bulbs. You might consider the warm write just to make the space feel a bit less stark in person. If you are converting from fluros to LEDs you can remove the ballast (might get a sparky to do it) and it'll save you a bit of electricity. Make sure the LEDs you get are flicker free, many of them aren't especially in tube form and you'll still get flicker, quick test is film the bulb itself in your phones high speed camera mode. Anything over 120fps should be enough to see the flicker pretty clearly. There's some large led panels I've found that are wonderful, only a few mm thick, selectable colour temperature and no flicker at all. Also very large light sources (they are meant to replace the 4 tube fittings in offices) so a nice diffuse light. I was talking with a friend who has been in the cinematography game for many years once, he said if you had $1000 to spend on a camera setup, spend $900 on lighting. It'll change as you fill it up with furniture, but you might consider some corner traps to kill off the echo some, you can make them cheaply in a way that still looks stylish and unobtrusive with some bits of wood, insulation batting and spandex type fabric. Best of luck with it all mate.

My goodness , that sure is a beautiful office. So much character and soul. A lot of the offices here in the US are *very* bland by comparison. And then that view! It’s like that whole room and view was made for the purpose of your bookshop! I think the office idea is brilliant as opposed to a shop. I would’ve thought a shop would be the next logical step, but you perfectly laid out the reasons why an office is a better fit for your business, especially giving you the flexibility to maintain a healthy work/life balance. But I think even an office this way is more exclusive, allowing for a more quiet and private opportunity to shop or sell one’s book or collection. You’re the only book collector I’m sub’d to and while I’m not a collector of rare books or manuscripts myself, I find your channel and the content most fascinating, and I’ve learned a great deal. Your growth has been rapid! I had no idea you’ve built all of this, including this community, inside of 1 year. Imagine where you’ll be in the next 2 to 5! Are you going to try to mitigate the UV discolouring issues that come from so much outside light? Not even direct sunlight, just light in general? We visited an old school turned home once, with 6m tall windows per classroom turned living room, and all the books looked blue... The windows were North-West facing, so hardly saw any direct sunlight.

Congratulations! Wishing you every success. P.S. If the new office is in an old manor house is the security very strong? Just worried that with lots of valuable stock it could be vulnerable to thieves. Take care x Update: The door lock on your new office looks really easy to get through. I'm told that thieves can put a credit card through the side of the Yale to depress it to open it easily. The addition of a Chubb lock would make the door a bit more secure. I'm no expert but have worked in premises that were broken into, so am somewhat paranoid. Make sure all your stock is fully insured also. Sorry to rain on your sunny day achievement, but making safe now could mean less heartache down the road.

Congratulations on the new office location! Since all of your traffic thus far as been virtual, have you considered maybe keeping office hours for 5 or 6 days per week, which would give you more time to spend at home with the family? You could still check for updates from home and package/mail sold items the next day or two. Perhaps see how much foot traffic you'll get in the first couple of months - that might give you a better idea of open hours. But best of luck!
