TOMY Murdoch review and first run

Hi peoples today I have here for you this first run of TOMY Murdoch, I have had him for a few days and tested him but you see his first track run here. It is the largest engine from TOMY and Trackmaster with the long locomotive part with the full drive unit tender and special coupling making it massive. the locomotive is quite lightweight but this particular one struggles to pull more than 3 coaches, I'm thinking perhaps a drive unit replacement if adding new traction tyres doesn't fix the problem. That is the gamble with buying second hand engines on ebay you never know if you are buying someone elses problem although having said that this is still quite a rare locomotive and took me a while to find one. Even though at the moment it runs poorly I am very happy to have it in my collection but I can't help think that its just because of its scarcity.
I did not try it through the water tower siding as i doubt it would make it through the points in its current state and I know for a fact that tender drive engines don't work on this type of turntable either.
Having said all that i can't give it an overall score until I try and make him run better
For looks alone I give it 8/10 (traction rods should move for higher score)

Nice addition to your railway, Murdoch looks better than how he runs, i guess its too heavy for the tender, also too large, My longest engine is Mighty Mac (smaller than Murdoch) and doesn't have any problem with hills or junctions, maybe your Murdoch's motor is a bit dirty or just TOMY didn't design it well. I have plans for this Murdoch and it will be an upgrade to a Tamiya Dangun motor and perhaps 3 Volt, this should solve all my running problems and create a monster fast freight locomotive.

I think these battery powered tenders are for the trackmaster track lines...They are just so strange on the blue Tomy tracks..I really hate the design >< the battery and main wheels should always be the front engine. Like Neville! Or even better..The classic design.

I tried to fix him with a new drive wheel set and he doesn't click easily now but he wheel spins too much, I added weight in the tender but I added too much weight and now he is slow. I think the motor is tired.

If you’re still alive, I think the problem might be a snapped axle gear.

@@juani.rodriguez7326 This was the exact issue with my ebay Percy. The axle gear would 'spread' at the crack under the slightest torque and would make a clicking sound similar to the clutch clicking.
