I made something pretty much identical for my PA14 - but here are a number of observations and suggestions: First, make sure that the stainless hooks are small enough to fit down the scupper holes. They are not big holes (about an inch or 25mm). Next, in order to make the hook assembly fit more easily down the scuppers, as knots are bulky, I simply use nylon zip ties (3 of them are more than enough) around the doubled-over bungee cord. No need to knot it once they are cinched up tight. I then wrapped the zip tie box ends with silicone tape just so that it's all smooth. Next suggestion: I make two separate bungee assemblies, not one. I hook my stretched bungee cord around the side handles rather than to the stern of the boat. They are much shorter that way. Once the length is determined, I tie on (this can be a knot or the zip-tie way) two big-assed carabiners - big enough to clip onto the rails. Alternatively, they can be two small snap hooks that loop around the handle and back around the bungee to create tension. And that's it. With tension on both sides, I just walk to the rear, lift it and up they pop. One final suggestion: Tomy is correct about how hard it is to get the caps off the original trolley. Since you aren't going to use them anymore, big, adjustable pliers are the way to go. Twist and pull and out they pop. And now a BIG suggestion: drill holes through the tubes opposite each other with a 1/8" (3mm) drill and pop rivet the pad eyes in, since they will only be hammered in and relying on friction to stay that way. The tubes are not threaded, so in my earlier design, the plugs were challenged to stay put in the holes once there's tension trying to pull them out! Oh, and the best way I found to remove some of the threads was to hold put the pad eye into vice, upside down and then use a sharp chisel to shear off just a little of the threads all the way around. I was still able to screw them into the tubes, but it's not enough to hold them in there permanently without the rivet suggestion. (Use short aluminum (aluminium) rivets and all will be well. G'day from the south coast of Western Australia!

Just roll up your sleeves and reach under the yak when it’s in the water and slide it in the scupper holes then pull it up the ramp. Won’t work with the sand wheels tho, ya gotta flip it for those.

Nice video, thanks. I've been doing this for a few years when the mod first came out. But you are struggling too much. Many of us do not have the luxury of doing it on a nice grassy area, so the technique is important. I do mine on the wet beach sand so reaching underneath is challenging when a wave comes up while you are underneath. I find it much easier to prop up the kayak on the wheels (just as a lift) as you do, but positioning of the cart is irrelevant at this point. I then drop the two hooks through the scupper holes. I try to feed the elastic all the way through too. Don't leave any slack on the elastic line on the deck surface. Then take the kayak and put it back on the ground, off the wheels. You will then see both hooks and don't need to reach underneath to blindly hook to the trolley. Take your cart and clip on the elastic band. Now position your cart so the pegs align up with the scupper holes and put the kayak back on the cart wheels. Since many of us do not have a motor mount, I pull the band to the stern while lifting the kayak up in the air....Voila. I am sure that there are many ways to do this, but I this is what I am used to after trying many ways over the last 2 years. I also find that putting 2 tennis balls on the forks of the trolley gives the hull a little support. You don't really want all the weight of the kayak center hull on just the trolley crossbar. Be sure not to store the kayak on the trolley! Thanks again.

Great video, i remember i was furstrated having to take my livewell and gear out of th kayak to put the dolly under but finally gave up and invested on the boonedox landing gear, now i regret not doing so since the start, i did however make my own re-enforcing inserts that have so far prevented the famous hull cracks, ive been running bdox for over 2 year now and no problems.(i will admit however that their stock in hull inserts that hold the base to the yak SUK!)

I have landing gear on my Outback and love them. I was scared of cracking the hull on my PA, so I opted to do this for now. Can you share some details on the inserts you used? The new landing gear is mounted differently from the older version I put on my Outback. My friend has them on his PA, so I'm waiting to see how it goes for him after a full season. I may eventually install landing gear on my mind. Thanks for watching.

@@TomyTekOutdoors i improvised, since there was little room to work on my yak, the best fitting and strongest support i used were solid 1/2" diameter by 15" long steel rods( got them at ace hardware) and then i drilled out were i needed to match the holes on the bdox bracing, so then i threaded the drilled out steel rods with an eaven bigger size thread. I rolled my 2016 Outback on it's side all the time. I got it second hand and didn't care as much. It's kind of a pain when you have a lot of gear that will fall off when you roll it over. This solution works great, but you have to get the hang of it over time. It can also be a challenge when you have too much gear and it's really heavy. Using this with a fully loaded PA on a steep ramp can be a challenge. I found another possible solution that I will share soon. Thanks for watching.

You do not need to crawl under to attach the hooks! Keep what you have, just add 4 hooks (or 2 hooks and 2 rings). On each side cut about 1' of bungee where it attaches to the cart. Attach the hooks/rings to the cut ends. Now when aligning the cart on the ground stretch the 1' bungee segments outwards. Place the kayak on the cart dangling the top bungees down the scuppers. Grab a dangling hook and attach it to the outward stretched hook/ring.

I'm using a single bungee that's long. I made it long enough for me to pull it over my cooler to reach to the back of my kayak and attach to my mount. What will determine the length will be wherever you can attach the bungee to have enough tension. I made the bungee a little longer than in the video to compensate for the things I have behind me like a cooler or bushel basket. I can adjust the length of the bungee by making a knot in it. I'll make a follow up video soon, showing how I use it now and in the field.

I'm going to try this other method that makes the bungee longer and you pull it up manually. We'll have to see how hard it is to do this with a PA, since it's heavy. If this works, I'll make an video update to this method. You could also apply 5200 or some adhesive on the eyelets to keep them in better. Thanks for watching.

I just tried using the longer bungee yesterday and it's a bit difficult to do this with a PA because of its weight. You have to hold it with one hand and pull the bungee up. That would be quite difficult for me with all the stuff I bring with me. I did find another way to still use the longer bungee, but I want to try it a few times to see if it works well. I also bent the clip on one of my hooks. I think I can fix it, but I might have to find stronger hooks. I'll make an update video after a few trips.

I's be carefull using scupper holes carts. I saw a video where a kayak had cracked in the scupper hole due to stress applied by the scupper cart. He ended up rushing back to shore at sea with the back en submerged. The air trapped in front saved him and his kayak. Here is another casemof a cracked scupper hole due to a scupper cart. I did notice in this video that he mentioned Hobie kayak have reinforced scupper holes? I had to to get an exchange on my kayak because of tin and misaligned kayak mold that left the scupper holes dangerously prone to cracking and the hull in general. The replacement kayak was awesome super thick hull and all alligned as it should be. Just an FYI. Inspect your cupper holes for misalignment and poor build. If Hobie ensures extra rigitidy in those area kudos to them. If you don't own a Hobie then I would inspect the hull and scupper holes. I'm new to the kayak world and glad I caught the discrepency in the build in my kayak early. We bought two of the same so it was easy to compare.

I've been using the scupper hole cart for years with no problem. It's unfortunate that all kayaks are not built the same, so someone will have the problem. You can add tennis balls to the posts to act as shock absorbers. There are other options like Boonedox landing gear and the C-tug cart.
@stevenarseneault1972

@@TomyTekOutdoors I would suspect that the lenght of the post that goes in the hole would make a difference. If the pole only fits half way in it definitly stressed the seams. My first poorly constructed kayak which was exchanged had a severly misaligned scupper hole seam and thin walled flaw so in that case the poles would stop half way in and the thin materials compounded the issue. This can be missed unsuspectingly if the owner is not aware of such issues. By design, scupper trolleys would probably be best by having rhe pole be flush with the top floor once inserted.

That would make sense. I'm surprised Hobie hasn't come up with something to make it easier. I hope they do something in the near future. I saw someone make a stand to help install the cart. I might try that soon.

Why did you decide not to put the boonedox landing gear on your new 360... I thought you had it on your outback
@TomyTekOutdoors
@TomyTekOutdoors 4 жыл бұрын
They changed the mount on the new landing gear. The mount on my Outback is metal and the new mounts are plastic. I heard the brackets are breaking on quite a few kayaks. My friend has them on his 360, but hasn't used them enough to say how well it holds up. I'm a little reluctant to put them on my PA360 because what I spent on it. This will do for now, but there are some other options I will be trying. I'll be sharing those soon.

Why wouldn't you lay the cart legs pointed towards the rear so you can see what the hell you're clipping to?
@TomyTekOutdoors
@TomyTekOutdoors 3 жыл бұрын
I've actually changed how I do this since I made this video. I have the bungee longer, so I can clip it to the cart while it is beside the cart. Then I lift the kayak over the cart. I adjust the slack of the bungee by tying it in a knot and attach it to my motor mount in the back. It works pretty much the same except I can see everything I'm doing.
