- Dead is dead. When I die, the campaign ends.
- Full realism settings. Only the external camera is allowed for filming purposes
- Manual Targeting
- No recognition manual for random merchant ships
- Attempt to abide by the historical orders in regards to the London Naval Treaty, Operating Procedures and Restrictions

North of Scotland at night in heavy fog I had a destroyer pass right by me at 150-200 meters. My watch crew didn't spot her till we were side by side and she didn't spot us at all which was incredibly fortunate. As fiddly as it is I now make sure to dive every 90 minutes to check the hydrophone and check my baffles.

I mean that was done irl too. Regular Hydrophone dives to check any ships who are BVR, *especially during bad weather as most Kaleu´s would just wait out the storm. It keeps the boat from dealing with rough seas and you have extended spotting-range. Also keeps the crew in drill as a emergency dive is one hell of a choreography which can be quite good or bad. Depending on which, it decided many times about survival or doom of many subs.

@@Tonci87 the depth caused it, the upper part of the torpedo hit it but not the detonator just at the tip of the torpedo.

Fantastic series! Of course a game no matter how realistic isn't exactly reality, but I'm finding it interesting how often in this early war period you would have been better off with a dead simple, reliable weapon rather than fighting with the more adjustable, but unreliable torpedoes you have. So often you can set-up almost any shot you want, all the programmable parameters on the torpedo aren't needed, so long as the thing can keep depth and explode on impact. XD

This looks like one of my attack runs, do calculations for an hour and then realize I am 50 meters away when fire and miss, except I would miss with a 4 torpedo salvo.

You can cancel an external torpedo reload and it will take 10 minutes to be able to dive (to simulate putting the torpedo back in its storage)...not 2 hours.

10 minutes is enough for a plane to bomb you. But it is too early for them to have radar able to detect a submarine yet.

@@tarkalak Doesn't matter; the planes in SH3 can't hit the broadside of a barn. Basically zero threat. They're too busy doing their silly dive bomber imitation vs. the way the irl aircraft actually attacked u-boats.

I know this is an old video but I think the issue might have been that you were too close to that frieghter. Your torps have a minimum arming distance (I beleieve I remember it as 300 meters but part of me remembers it as 700 meters) and you were really really close. If you're too close the torps will either not detonate or bounce off of the hull.

The interiors of the boats are not fully modeled in the OneAlex Mod Edition. This is done to improve game stability (apparently having the whole boat modeled can lead to crashes). The control room, radar/hydrophone room and conning tower are all you can access. So you didn´t miss much :)

You can always watch some videos of the game "Wolfpack". It's a completely modelled type 7 based on museum pieces. Another one to look at is "Crush Depth U boat simulator" same idea, all done from extensive research from museum pieces, manufacturer plans etc. Very hifidelity work. You will be able to tour the whole boat by watch some videos on this without dropping a lot of money on simulator titles.

Could the torpedo failures be due to them hitting the rounded bottom of the hull and bouncing away, rather than directly on the side?

That is exactly what happened with Torp #3. Torp #1 malfunctioned outright. Torp#2 ran just below the targets keel (otherwise it most likely would have bounced as well).

The reality is you need 10 or 20 torpedoes to sink a (small) ship.... 🤔Well I made up these numbers but I think in the real world it would be much much harder to sink ships..! Even during the so called happy times the u-boat waffe wasn't sinking 1 ship for 3 torpedoes shot.., I'm quite sure of that. Still a complete 100% realistic game would be boring 😉 Thanks for the uploads and greetings bibia

@@bibia666 : It did happen, but it was rare. On 2 occasions during the early war period, U-48 (Type VIIB) sank 7 ships in 1 patrol - so, 2 torpedoes per ship.

Thank you. The pacific setting in Silent hunter 4 to me isn´t as interesting as the Atlantic. If you play a German sub the war will get ever more difficult and deadly, while the reverse seems to be true for American subs.

I think the waves were too high. You can´t use the deck gun at windspeeds above 7 m/s since the gun deck will be underwater most of the time.

3:10 really interesting since early to Mid-war DDs were notoriously bad at detecting Subs. Not because they didnt have Sonar on board, but more specifically because most crews were simply not good at operating them. This was especially true when HF/DF was first introduced and the Sonar Operators had to re-learn alot for it to work like it should. But when proficiency was high with it, it was a menace for the Grey Wolves and proved to be one of the most single-handedly important pieces of technology brought into the Atlantic to turn the tides against the Wolves (along with alot more factors, obviously) New technology takes time to learn, especially in a high-stakes game like the Merchant War was. Most famously ON-92 as in that Convoi only the British Rescue Vessel Bury carried a HF/DF Sonar which was incredibly good, but due to crew errors and them being unable to operate it properly led to the devestating attack ON-92 suffered.

I think those first two torpedoes failed because you were below minimum distance no? Im terrible at estimating distance in silent hunter tbh. I had 4 torpedoes fail on me today also but i couldnt check with the camera.

From the first salvo, one went too low, second was on proper depth. I think the issue for the second and third torpedo, was that the ship was not tall enough - he hit the sloped bottom part of the hull, the impact detonator didn't go off and the torpedo ricocheted off the ship. Did he shoot below arming distance? I don't really know. Tonci likes to get awfully close to some ships; I prefer 1000m - 1500m, maybe even 2000m, but then you have to be very precise with your measurements, because it's quite easy to miss

The minimum arming distance is 150m and I think I was just outside of that (although I was quite close). It wouldn´t have made a difference however. The first Torp malfunctioned outright, and the second one would have bounced off like the third, if it hit (it ran just below the keel)

I was closer than I imagined I would be (misjudged the size of the ship), but I think I was just outside of the arming range (150m). The second torp ran just below the targets keel, if it had hit, it most likely would have bounced due to the inclination of the hull, just like #3

@@Tonci87 the arming distance on the TI could be as low as 100m or as high as 300m as far as im aware. I never played SH3 but that second torpedo seem to go right through the ship so i thought it was because of that.

@@Tonci87 arming distance is minimum of 300m in the game and as it was historically, there was even a time they said do not fire closer then 500m (during the early war torpedo crisis).

Well the steam powered torpedo had advantages over the electric one, so it remained in use. Greater range, faster speed, higher reliability, less maintenance required, cheaper

Steam torpedo is just fine at night, especially in bad weather - freighters usually won't spot the torpedo in time to evade it, particularly if it is going at its top speed of 44 knots.

I don't understand why you keep firing your torpedos so low. All the misses you had was due to the torpedo bounching off the ship or going under it. I understand that the chart tells you that with that weather you must shoot at 5m deep but if the ship's draft is around that you would not get a 90° vertical impact angle and the torpedo will bounce or not explode at all

@@Tonci87 yeah but with those waves a ship can be lifted quite a bit so you would miss it anyways or the torpedo would think the actual depth is lower and go way under the target
