For nice crunch I usually set the gain 100% and master around 50%, not the other way around like in this video. The sound is fuller and not so fizzy

Really? That seems to go against common knowledge of pre-amp gain vs driving power tubes.

Did you get one? I found a 20C almost new for 300€ in our local Ebay equivalent and a 10" Greenback for 70€. Both arriving next week, so excited! Always wanted a Plexi but can't afford one. I think this will tickle the itch for some years.

I am the only one who is shocked at how clean the clean section is? The distortion is lacking. But those cleans. Wow. Now that is a serious pedal amp.
@howabouthetruth21574 жыл бұрын
I can think of several overdrive pedals that would make this amp scream & sustain as much as ya want. They accomplished the hard part. Adding an overdrive ONLY when needed is the easy part.
@Ervin-11904 жыл бұрын
@@howabouthetruth2157 Can you name a few, preferably without breaking the bank? I tried this amp today, the cleans were nice. But I didn't like the overdrive. It's sounded too muddy or something. I only play acoustic, so im not 100% sure on how express myself about the sound, but it wasn't this raw distorted sound we like I guess. I played on it with a Gibson Les Paul Standard btw. Would love to hear some pedal recommendations to make the sound complete.
@howabouthetruth21574 жыл бұрын
@@Ervin-1190 For starters, these Origin amps, including the 20C ( combo ) have an old-school type of circuitry ( for lack of a better term, I'm no amp tech ) that absolutely requires these amps to be played VERY loud, in order to back off the gain enough to drive those power tubes for a more transparent overdriven sound, that SWEET spot. Note how the guy in this video states before playing that he has the master volume "pretty much dimed". Most people don't understand just how loud 20 watts rms truly is in a tube amp. For example, a 50w tube amp is easily 75% as loud as a 100w tube amp, seriously. I've owned & gigged with both for years. I don't know why the hell so many youtubers & even sales reps are calling this Origin 20C "a bedroom amp". I've already read from quite a few people who own this exact amp, saying you HAVE TO play this amp incredibly loud in order to bring it to life and "get that sweet tone", EVEN WITH THE LOWER POWER SETTINGS. ( 20w, 5w, 1/2w selector switch ) This is the type of amp that can get you evicted, lol. The only thing "new" about this amp is the tilt switch and that 3/way power selector, both very cool features. But Marshall really did go old-school with the circuitry, so this amp has to be driven, unlike the JCM series & most other tube amps made since the 80's, where you can really back off the master volume ( but they still don't sound as good either, when played at low volume.....NO tube amp sounds good at "low volume" in my opinion, but tube amps are still the best, period ). My #1 choice for an overdrive pedal is the legendary BOSS SD-1 Super Overdrive with 3 knobs ( NOT the regular Boss overdrive with only 2 knobs ). And then I use it rather sparingly, to get that transparent overdriven sustain. The Boss SD-1 is the most copied circuit of ALL overdrive pedals, believe it or not. Many companies charging far more money for their pedals ( that many folks love ) are simply copying the circuitry of the Boss SD-1. This has been well documented by techs who take them apart & know what they see. You sound like the type of guy who would much prefer the single coil pickups of a Strat or Tele. Single coil pickups can clean up easier than a humbucker while still driving the amp. And I can relate with you about acoustic guitar, because I retired from the full-on rock band scene & went acoustic duo & solo act way back in 1992. My partner and I were the best acoustic act in central Florida for a decade. ( He was once touted by the critics as the best un-signed solo guitarist in Florida back when he played in rock bands, no joke. ) And then in 2002, I retired from professionally gigging altogether. I simply got tired of it, but I do miss playing the music itself. With all the above being said, I love this Marshall Origin 20C combo so much, especially for the price, it makes me want to buy one. I sure as hell can't play it in my own home, I would have to rent a damn mini storage or go someplace else to crank the thing, lol. Still seriously considering buying it though. I guess it's the musician in me.

@@Ervin-1190 Hey Ervin, please see my main response to you. I forgot to explain how a tube amp and its distortion sounds much better & cleaner when playing in a full band. The bass and drums really fill in, and suddenly the distortion of that electric guitar/amp sounds much better.
@Ervin-11904 жыл бұрын
@@howabouthetruth2157 First of all, thank you for taking the time to make this detailed response! About the guitar, I actually very much prefer the Les Paul, because I wanna go for sounds towards ZZ Top, AC/DC and Led Zeppelin. A Strat, as beautiful sounding as it is, it's not the sound I want to go for. (Maybe for a second electric guitar down the line ;) I today tried the 50's and 60's Standard and I liked the 50's neck more. So the guitar is pretty much picked. Now the amp.. Speaking of the amp, I actually wanna use it strictly at home and it really cant get too loud because of neighbors... So having to cranking up the volume to get right sound is going to be a problem. In the end, the question is, can a pedal help in this situation? Can I still get a nice dirty sound when the volume isn't too loud by adding the a distortion or overdrive pedal? Or does the amp volume still need to be set on high?

Amazing demo !! I am also a Tele player and just tried this amp the other night at Guitar Center, knew nothing about but was very attracted to vintage look and plugged in my Tele with a Oceans 11 pedal to see how this amp would receive mid level power draw pedal and it was pretty mind blowing. There is something very special about a Fender Guitar into a Marshall amp, it's pure magic. I wished you had covered the Attenuator feature which allows you to go from 20w - 3w - .50w, that was the clencher for me when I tried the amp out. I am on the hunt now for a deal on this amp. As a big Marshall Fan since decades, I had been waiting for the release of this new Marshalls, and after a short testing in the store I bought the 50 Watt version, because I need a 2nd amp for the rehearsal room. But when I played it for a while, the scratchy distortion bothered me more and more, despite it is not so bad as in the 20 Watt version. It's a pity, because the concept and the retro style of the Origin amps is great! So I changed my purchase into a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe IV and now I am satisfied, and that to me as a long time Marshall player! (my main amp today is a Friedman Small Box combo, but the Fender comes clauser to this than the Origin).

I know that a lot of Marshall fans out there will react to my post but hey... IMO, If you have a gain control AND a master volume, why the heck would you need an attenuator for? To get the power tubes cookin? I'm sorry but in terms of volume, there is not much of a difference between 5w or 20w. From what I have learned, you need 10 times more wattage to perceive a double in volume of your amp. Do you really think that an attenuator will make your amp sound better at lower volume? Just put your master volume down... Also, the boost seems to be really subtle and this amp sounds bright enough to my ears so why would you need a presence control? A lot of goodies for nothing? Tone wise, I find that the DSL beats this one anytime...It would be nice to get a better version of a Plexi. Maybe next year Marshall?

Mood Switch Music the attenuators definitely drop the volume but doesn’t affect the tone it’s really good. The wattage changes are only approximate😉

My advice, Never limit yourself to a 10" speaker! If you buy a combo buy a 12" and nothing smaller. even a single 12" cab is limitted. best to do a mini-stack rig with head and 2ea 12" cabs co you can use both for larger venue gigs and just one cab for smaller gigs! Besides a head and seperate mini cabs are much easier to lug around, and less prone to damage!
