I've been playing the violin for years and only now did my (new) teacher discover that my bow hold is not ideal and the problem is that my fingers are not flexible the way you show it. The problem just started to show now because I needed it for a complicated string crossing. Now I feel like I need to forget everything I've grown used to doing for years and start from scratch again. It's important to aim for finger flexibility from the very beginning. So yes, thank you for this video, it's a good, well-explained start.

Excellent video. I do wish that you would discuss placement of the thumb a bit more.

thank you for a clear definition, but I am wondering what the sleeve is at the frog where your thumb sits. I feel it might benefit me. Thanks.

After watching this, I realized my index finger was far too deep. What a difference this makes! Thank you 🙏

My bow hold started holding me back when I had to play faster than 80bpm. Thanks to this kind of videos I sort of know what to do about it.

Clearly, the Franco-Belgian hold is much the most popular these days, and you often hear the Auer-style hold being described as in some way irrational or outdated - as Schmidt does here. But when you consider the galaxy of greats who have used it - a list that also includes Kreisler himself - it's not unreasonable to suggest that he's misunderstanding something. Certainly the account he gives here is a caricature of the actual technique. Most of the people watching a video like this will be adult self-learners. And in my experience the Auer-style hold is much simpler mechanically and has been much easier to master on my own. I'm not sure what all the complex finger and wrist movements of the mainstream technique are supposed to achieve, but as I can't afford a good teacher I haven't been able to make much sense of them. On the other hand, I find I can achieve similar results with the Auer-style technique, by modelling my bow arm on the wonderful Nathan Milstein. So my point is, if you are self-learning, don't accept the mainstream technique without question. Experiment for yourself to discover which approach suits you better.
