Ms Bushkova, you are a violin goddess. Very helpful. Please continue your excellent work helping the world (and older beginners like me) to better understand the correct ways to play violin. Much appreciated.

Thank you for your video Professor. Wish to see if there is a video that you could demonstrate how you lead students to practice "sound production" after relearning/fixing the Right hand! ( because all the bow techniques like how we use bow pressure/speed also need to change to proper setting after fixing a these fundamental thing ,probably will be different from before? how do we refer to this?) I finished almost your videos and I specially like your bow-related videos. Now I am a conservatory student who suffered from pain after so many years of wrong setting (get tense from taking the bow)and play a lot of orchestra outside of school, even somehow my professor told me is too late to want to change my bow hold and coz i am 22 etc....is that true @@? feeling frustrated. Thank you for your videos, it really helps!

22 is absolutely NOT too old to change your bow hold. It is true that it is far more difficult to do when we are past the age of 30 but not before. It is also true that it only can be done by scrupulous and meticulous analysis of your own playing, understanding what you want to achieve, and a constant mental effort for many many months. Regarding "practice "sound production" after relearning/fixing the Right hand " - if you are interested in a personal consultation, write to me via my website.

a low elbow in the right arm can be good though. Yehudi Menuhin *famously* had an elbow that was too high many many years (many of his *younger* years)... and that lead to major physical problems. The shaky bowing that we see in his late recordings show this result. Violists and cellists are taught to keep their right arm more down than "up" or "sticking out". So unfortunately I have to disagree with 5:58. And yes, people will say I'm a nobody, and that's fine: but *Yehudi Menuhin* himself wished he relaxed his arm and kept his elbow down i the prime of his life. It's in many books and interviews.

In reality, different players will play with different elbow levels. Some have a naturally higher elbow, and some have a naturally lower elbow. There is no one prescription for all. The teacher's goal is to recognize when the elbow is TOO low or TOO high for the particular student. Mr.Menuhin's motoric RH problems came from a different source than just the high elbow.

Another amazing video! In my experience as a classroom teacher, many problems happen because students reach up to the violin, or bring the violin up to their shoulder. Even in a classroom setting, if the students know from the beginning that the violin comes DOWN to their shoulder, and the bow arm comes down to meet the instrument (like when we eat, and reach down to the plate, not up to it) many problems are avoided.

Regarding problematic bow holds, I call the hooked index finger "The Claw." This label was inspired by the comic genius Jim Carrey. Here's a clip of this disturbing syndrome achieving full manifestation: kzbin.info/www/bejne/i5O3moN7ha-nnaM

My first observation was how thin and muscle-less this girl is. No wonder the bow is so heavy. I think violin students should be encouraged to do some weightlifting in order to strengthen the upper body. We are so discouraged from doing any exercise in order to prevent injury, but some gentle weightlifting does wonders for making bowing feel much more effortless. Even a couple of 5lb dumbbells can be used to strengthen arms and shoulders very quickly.

I'm in big favour of at least light weight (relative to what the individual can handle) and flexibility training for musicians. It should be ingrained as part of their practice routines. The benefits are numerous.

The only muscle that needs to be strong to operate the bow is a small one on the side of one's wrist. Nothing else needs to be involved. Her overall thinness has nothing to do with that particular small muscle. I had very strong muscular boys (and girls) who had similar problems with holding the bow correctly. Having said that, I agree with the general comment that we (the uppers string players) need stronger upper bodies -- especially the back and lower abs -- to keep us healthier.

Thank you so much for the video. I have been struggling with the other type of wrong bow hold since I started playing on a 4/4 bow and my bows were also very bad before, so it just kept getting worse and nobody knew how to help me fix it. I will try the exercise and return here with an update. ❤

From time to time my pinky will lock, I've learned through the practice of isometrics how to isolate, contract & relax muscle-groups. "Re-setting" my right-hand for me means to quickly contract the muscles of the fingers and hand, not wrist, forearm or shoulder, just a flash-contraction of the hand and then relaxation. The tension that caused my finger to lock disappears and any heaviness in the bow becomes light.

Great tips! I will be incorporating all these exercises as I've recently developed some right hand tension due to working on harder repertoire.
