The one drawback I felt being a full alternate player (since i started playing) is that I can't play high bpm maps beyond 200 bpm comfortably. I also struggle with stamina, but am okay at finger control/low bpm maps. but maybe that's just because I haven't really tried pushing my speed lol

When I started tablet for the first time, I used my phone as a tablet. I used those cheap pens, and the friction was way too much, so I put a thin piece of paper between it and my phone screen, which basically made the friction zero, but I still technically dragged. After getting a real tablet, the friction from drag was too much, and no piece of paper could fix that. So I switched to hovering and have been hovering since :)

@@teambl4dez you have to use an Android device. Search up "virtual tablet lite (s-pen). There will be ads if I remember correctly, so you might occasionally touch them depending on how you hold your pen. Do not use the wireless mode, too much latency, wired only. I don't remember exactly how to set it up, so look it up online. I do recommend using one of those rubber tipped touchscreen pens with a thin piece of paper in between that and the screen, or else the friction will be way too much. Hope this helps!

Wait I know this is a year later but were you hovering while drawing??
@Nirax3
@Nirax3 2 жыл бұрын
@@Goose-kb2yo I'm not OP but I guess they mean hovering when you don't actually draw but just move around on the canvas. When you're using your drawing software, your pen will probably be in the air more than on the tablet. Drawing/input = dragging. Movement = hovering. In osu you only use the pen for movement, the input is done with the keyboard. A friend of mine who is an illustrator intuitively hovered for this reason too.
@penguinxrock
@penguinxrock Жыл бұрын
@@Goose-kb2yo i will add on to what Nirax has said, as i also first got my tablet for drawing. when i'm drawing, yes i drag on the screen, but sometimes i switch to other windows (ex. checking social media or changing music). then i would hover because dragging would be like constantly holding left click while moving your mouse. outside of drawing, i only really need to put my pen down if i want to click a button, so i stick to hovering in osu (and of course, i want to save my pen nibs for drawing)

BTW I use a drag playstyle and don't have a tablet cover, one disadvantage is that the more I scratch the tablet the more the feel of the surface changes and over time the scratchyness has increased the friction of the tablet changing how aiming feels. Although I use a Gaomon 620 so the surface material is probably cheaper. I didn't buy a tablet cover because it is legit cheaper to buy a entirely new tablet than to buy a cover off the popular websites.

For a long time i was a Hover user, and always my right thumb and right arm hurt after a couple of songs. I tried many grips an couldn't find one that didn't hurt and was precise. I decided 2 days ago to try and drag my pen. It solved al my problems: - Nothing hurts any more - I have a normal hold - My accuracy increased instantly. I'm S-99% or SS songs that i could barely get A. My largest flaw was that i could not do accurate jumps, now i can. - And i can do really small and fast spinners. I could never do small spinners, they always had a big diameter and were more oval-square shaped. Now i can do the tiny, smooth, and hypnotising spinners top players do. To put it with numbers, i could do a 14000 point spinner before, now in the same song and spinner i can do a 24000 point spinner.

The biggest problem with dragging (especially on cheaper tablets like my trash veikk) is that your pen nibs wear out quickly and if you don't keep an eye on it, you may find yourself with a square tip or a flathead-screwdriver tip (the latter was the case for me). This also worsens your aim because there's more contact and irregular drag. Also, nibs cost a LOT.
@Horaheehoo
@Horaheehoo 4 жыл бұрын
There is another problem other than nibs, some cheaper tablest have hardware latency and cause your movements to be slow. I have this problem when i drag on my tablet and i use hawku drivers. (XpPen G640 rev-b)

Yes. Only in the most extreme cases where your hand mobility is physically limited does it actually matter. It's mostly about what suits you mechanically when you play, how you've learned to hold a pen, what's most natural. The more you worry about shit like this, the less you'll be actually focusing on improving the real problem, which is that you just need to play more.

I hover, but during wide or fast jumps I'll tap where I want my cursor to end up to avoid over-shooting, it helps a lot.

I'm a hover player since day 1, didn't even knew drag was a thing. I don't want to scratch my tablet, or damaging nip of the pen. Since i also use the tablet for studies and work. Prob gonna keep on hovering, but maybe I'll try to drag sometime

I disagree with your statement that hovering makes aim shaky and inconsistent. I am a hover player. I did not experience the problems stated in the video. I can do squares easier in hover than drag. When I drag, I will get super duper slow in jumps. I even rather play with mouse over dragging. EDIT : EVERYTHING IS PREFERENCE.

I personally use a small plastic card, put it on my wacom then drag. It doesn't scratch the tablet, the card is smooth so I can go fast( I play with small area).

that's why you should use a finger to keep a fixed distance between tablet and pen, and adding friction

I hover and my only problem is that sometimes when I'm doing big jumps I hover too high and my pen movement is not captured anymore, sort of a "tablet drift", but otherwise I pretty much enjoy hovering a lot. (also I forgot to mention, but I drag to do spinners, and I'm also gonna try that thing of dragging when doing streams)

put a finger down to help you rest down to keep a fixed distance. also adds friction. ez

for spinners it's simple, just spin pen around the finger tip which you aim at the center of the playfield

tonehh: "hover means my aim often curves rather than being snappy, which, i guess, has the upside of looking unique" me, a drag player whose aim tends to curve when hitting stuff like corners anyway: "wait is that supposed to only be a hover thing" also, i've decided i wanna try hover this weekend

You could also buy less scratchy pen nibs.. there’s ones that are more… squishy…? If that makes sense? Lots of pen nibs that artists use are soft and don’t scratch (unless you’re like, going crazy on the surface. And even then it just wears the nib more than the surface)

Dragging gives me better combo I ocassionally break combos and not consistent jumps because of shaking and tightening of hands overtime while hovering.

Absolutely brilliant video! I had no idea that you could play hybrid!!! I do have a question though, since these parts confuse me: 09:43 ~ 09:54 + 10:49 Are you saying that I can use the pen to hover AND click circles with at the same time while still having access to Z and X clicking ? If so that sounds really cool! Or does clicking with the pen make me unable to use Z and X to tap with ?! I can't understand this and would like clarification of it :)

I played for about 2 years with hover cause I was afraid of scratching my tablet. But then I decided... eff it, it's old anyway, and I play on a rather small size so I can just... move the spot until I kill it. But, since I started dragging, I gotta say that my aim has improved immensely in just a few months. So, I'm sticking with that now :D

I play drag but the thing is, i put my mousepad over the tablet. I feel like i should learn to hover cause i feel like the mousepad is making my aim slow. I used to be a mouse player that can set 270-290pp constantly. After switching to tablet for three days, i can currently set 200pps with it. Should i just drag on the tablet or is it the same if i put my mousepad on it?

@@tduxx Well, I cant say more than preference. Hovering gives you greater speed, but worse control (after lots of practice not noticable anymore) But Dragging gives you a great control and most likely better aim, but your tablet gets scratched up, youll need new nibs and if youll press too hard itll be tiring for your hand, means less stamina, but you dont have to press hard. You can be good with each playstyle, there is no better/worse, just look how you want to play :) Hovering will also be a bit hsrder to learn at first.
