Recently played a gig with this amp as my other tube amp (Fender SuperSonic) has had multiple failures attributed to poor quality components. Amps used by the other bands included a JCM-800, Peavey Butcher, Fender Deluxe Reverb, and a few others. The Peavey player even indicated that they owned the Super Crush but hadn’t played it live. Every single other player complimented the Super Crush’s tone. Visible surprise from the other guitar players at how well it sat in the mix and the clarity of every note while maintaining saturated distortion. JCM guy is going to get one now. If you happen to find one in store, give a bit of volume to experience what it sounds like in proper operation. Really opens up as it gets louder. Can’t compliment it enough for what it is: an affordable, easy to transport, tubeless, hairy gain machine that takes a Tube Screamer really well.

Cranking the master between noon and 3 o’clock, turning the gain up to taste and filling in with the OD of choice is where that amp excels. I can get a classic rock, southern rock, Ozzy/Sabbath and a modern metal tone with just a few tweaks. Love this amp.

I put a Boss 7 band EQ in the FX loop of my Super Crush and blew open the hidden nitro metal sound this amp is fully capable of. I'm still on the fence as to rather or not I want to add an Ibanez Tube Screamer OD pedal to it or not. I also cranked the master volume up to 10 and use my dirt channel's volume to adjust accordingly. Sounds so good. Best 100w non tube head I have ever had the pleasure of owning and playing through.

I've been using a BOSS Katana 100w MKII for quite some time, but i'm thinking about getting into the real stuff. How do you compare both amps? Would you advice me getting the Supercrush and then investing in effect pedals so I can get the most out of it or should I wait some more time and get something even chunkier. My main focus right now is modern metal. I also don't have a cab and would like to hear your take. Cheers!
@jasonlewis53502 жыл бұрын
After that, play the heads you want. If you get a great tone from the Super Crush with an OD, then it’s a great option. Let your ears do the work. Try different boosts and overdrive pedals too. I like the micro amp from MXR and the 5150 OD with the gain low too or adding it as a 3rd option or channel. But that’s just me. I used to run all Boss - SD-1 in the front, Chorus Ensemble, RV-6 Reverb and DD-8 in the FX loop. Now it’s all MXR - micro amp, 5150, analog chorus and carbon copy. I’m from the Zakk/Randy school of tone. LOL, but I can get whatever I want from that set up. On the other hand, if that doesn’t work for you, then don’t settle. Wait and save. The only wrong answer is not trusting yourself and settling for something that you’ll regret until you sell it at a loss just to complain about it forever more. Been there.

@@MostlyLost Thank you for the advice! My next investment would be and OD pedal (Fortin 33 or an OD808). Then after a cupple of years, when I have some sort of rehearsal where I can be as noisy as the law of phisics allow, I will get a nice amp head and continue my jurney, already having a good OD.

I bought one of these 3 years ago and have gigged with it at every live show I done. I have it paired with a 2/12 Hughes Kettner cabinet and it absolutely kicks ass. It loves pedals. It excels at hard rock and metal. It does a decent enough job on the clean channel. For the money it is hands down the best solid state 100 watt head I have ever heard. Damn well worth $500 new.

One thing about this amp nobody mentions is that when you crank it up to max, it dosent sound bad like older solid state heads used to. I know because i ran it threw my 1960a and my over-sized mesa 412 opened up to max. I generally always use my triple rec or my 6505 all the time but I had to buy this and try it out. This really is a fun amp for the price. Only down side is it isnt quite loud enough if your competing against another guitar player using a 100watt tube head. If they make a 200 plus watt model it would be interesting. I dont regret my purchase tho, really great sounding solid state amp!

I picked one of these up brand new for cheap during the black friday sales last year. $425 i had two Mkiii 100 rockerverbs and both had bad tubes and were extremely noisy, one channel went out. I ordered one of these to hold me over until more stock of rockerverbs arrived but i never ordered another rockerverb. This thing is impressive for its size and adding an eq in the loop and boosting the low frequencies... makes it sound damn close, close enough for me to not warrant spending $1600 more on another mkiii rv.

I have this amp and love it. I like the distortion on it and the cleans are very nice. Reverb is top notch. As for using distortion and overdrive pedals it's picky with what it is. Some of my pedals sound awesome and others terrible. For the most part I just plug straight in. Chorus and delay pedals in the effects loop are sweet.
@DylanHutto Жыл бұрын
Solid state amps don't sound bad. It's typically a combination of user error and the fact that they're probably using the stock speaker that it came with. The VOTW speakers aren't bad, but they're not my personal taste. Glenn Fricker did a video about changing the stock speakers in a Behringer cab and the difference was night and day. Same with the Peavey Sheffield speakers, the OG ones. With how things are going right now, I honestly kinda hope we see more of these JFET amps, and I think it would be cool to see some of those "solid state tubes" implementing JFET's, as tubes and tube amps are getting a bit more pricey But I digress, I really want one of these. They're fucking sick

For a solid state amp this thing rips. With pedals you can pretty much shape the drive character in lots of cool ways. Played through one for a little while and definitely want one. The clean channel makes a great pedal platform and I can easily switch to the high gain channel when I want to turn to the nasty side. Also, the master volume is super useful as I can easily lower or raise the volume as appropriate for practice without messing with my channel settings. Being an old school pedal guy, this would be my amp of choice for the money every time. Simple, flexible, reliable, and sounds great.

Great review! Nice to see a non-tube amp. I've been pretty pissed-off at tube amps lately. Ever since I starting learning about repairing tube amps. I am finding out that too many of them are built like crap. And for what they are charging for them.... it makes me mad. And now we have a tube shortage, which is driving the prices up even further. I think it's time for most of us to start looking for alternatives now. Those fancy "guitar computers" are getting REALLY good. Pro's are using the Fractal and QC stuff on stages all around the world. The Boss Katana head is still great for players on a budget. This Orange Super Crush is also very good. But it does need some help in order to get the most out of it. It takes pedals well, and you need pedals with it. An EQ in the loop, and a booster up front. The Super Crush would also be a great power amp to go with a QC or a Fractal. Cabs make a difference, so I think you gotta pair this Super Crush with the right cab. One cab might be too dark. Another cab might sound too harsh. It's like that 5150 Iconic amp. The matching cab sounds like crap. But you plug the Iconic into a MESA or an ENGL cab and it sounds badass. I still would recommend the Katana head over the Orange Super Crush, only because it's $100 cheaper, and you get built-in effects to play with. You also get several distortion tones to work with, instead of basically just one from the Orange. You could also use the Orange with pedals like a Friedman BE-OD, or a Revv G3. I'm sure those would sound really good with it. With 100-watt tube amps in the $2,000 to $3,000 range now.... something like a Super Crush or a Katana head is the way to go. You can buy a lot of pedals with the money you save! OR... do a Super Crush and a Fractal FM9, and basically have everything you could ever want. Add your cab of choice, and you are all set. So many options now. I think those expensive tube amps are still great for recording albums in the studio. But I wouldn't want to own them, or practice with them. They are just not practical. A re-tube and bias job on a 100-watt tube amp costs about the same as an Orange Super Crush! LoL!

@@IJIIKY9192 The older tube amps were made better. But nothing lasts forever. Tubes wear out, and caps go bad. Pots get dirty. Heat melts things over time. Component values drift. After watching this video a few days ago I called a friend of mine who owns this head and he brought it over to my studio yesterday, because I figured, hell, why not try it for fun. Damn! I ran it exactly like I run my Marshall with my trusty TC G System using the 4 cable method and was TOTALLY blown away . Especially when I kicked in the EP boost pedal through a loop send on the TC. This is one great sounding and feeling beast of an amp head with amazing feel for an SS amp! The clean channel also sounded heavenly with the mod, verb and delays of the TC G System. I did a little research on these. I'm seriously thinking about grabbing one of these to use as a power amp for my helix. The preamp on that uses JFETS, from my research, those react really similar to tubes. Colin over at CSGuitars has a whole video on it. The power section on that amp is actually the pedalbaby. It's class a/b. You're feeling the push pull that you'd get from a tube amp. The head is only like $60 more then the stand alone pedalbaby as well. Might as well buy the head and have a decent backup incase my helix floor decides to take a shit mid set, ya know....

It's basically a solid state Orange Rocker. I read somewhere that Orange have been sitting on this solid state tech since the 70s. There are some really sought after solid state amps from the 70s, which are worlds apart from the wasp-in-a-bottle practice amps we had in the 90s and 2000s. Still, they didn't take off at the time, so Orange canned it. An Orange Rocker that will stay cleaner than any valve amp and takes pedals like a champ sounds like a real tempting offer.

I am still on the fence between this crush 100 and the Marshall dsl 40 they are both the same price i am a beginner at 58 years young only been playing for 9 months now that my 3 kids are grown and the basement is all mine lol ,but really though would you consider this a good choice i do like the no maintenance option of solid state but to me through the internet haven't heard one live yet it allways seems muffled but maybe that there cabinet covering they use over the speakers on all there cabinets thats the orange sound i guess ,but to my ears its seems the Marshall dsl 40 delivers that crisp high gain crunch more pronounced but thats the Marshall sound i guess i got a Marshall code 50 to begin with and have hated the sound sence the beginning but it was cheap and got me into playing again in everyones opinions do you prefer that solid state orange sound that maybe could be better through a different 2x12 cabinet with a set of to your liking speakers and dont get me wrong it sounds pretty good maybe i am asking to much from a solid state circuit lol but is the Marshall the way to go with the dsl 40 for that classic crunch or do you think the orange can deliver with a good pedal and a different 2x12 thanks and play everyday it my mental medication 💊 😉 that hot woman and my motorcycle it keeps my sanity 😂😂😂😂😂❤

Definitely my favourite demo of this amp. I bought the head last year when it came out in Europe in October. Been having a hard time dialling it in. I think it’s the cab I’m using: a small Marshall 1x12 with a crappy Celestion in it. What would be a good cab speaker recommendation? 2x12 with V30‘s? I do love the amp but something in my rig is not up to par…Cheers for the content!

Using a class A/B power section, which unlike a class D power section in most solid states, it holds up in the head room. Class D power when pushed will clip the signal before it peaks and make it glassy and brittle. Although solid state does require more power to push the amp into clipping than tubes. But I will say Orange have definitely taken a step in the right direction for solid state amplification. Also their JFET pre amp section, but I don't the physics behind that, so it still confuses me a bit.

@@felinekaiju4517 the mach 3, has more warmth than any if m'y tube amps. And these are class D. But that's because there are well built. Technology is nothing if you don't have a good understanding of how make a good amp. Pat Quilter has a long history in tubes and then solid state amps. To me he's a real innovator and makes high end solid states that have their own great sounds

do you do master volume up, channel volume down or the opposite?
@roosternm68302 ай бұрын
I do. I crank the master to 10 and use the channel volume to adjust volume. I put a BOSS 7 band EQ pedal in the fx loop and it makes this head a flame thrower without overdrive pedals, distortion pedals, etc. Just the eq. I do have an mxr fullbore metal pedal go9ng into the front for other stuff, but the on board dirt channel with the eq in the fx loop slays!

Just got this amp... Is it normal for it to be so quiet even with both the volume and master on noon? Mine doesn't get loud until both volumes are at about 3oclock and beyond. I also have to crank the treble and gain all the way up with an overdrive to be even remotely decent with high gain metal tones. I'm a little disappointed with mine...
@TONEWARSgearshow2 жыл бұрын
I had to crank the gain and hit it with an overdrive as well. As long as an amp has enough gain with an overdrive pedal, it works for me. I honestly can't remember the volume settings when I reviewed it though.
@KaddysJamKave2 жыл бұрын
@@TONEWARSgearshow after spending more time with the amp it appears you need to crank the master and then adjust the channel volume to taste. Strange but it seems it's designed this way after talking to a couple other owners as well.

After watching your demo I am to conclude the amp doesn't have a clean tone, because if it did surely you would demo that as well. You see gain for the most part can be had by a pedal or an amp, but a clean tone cannot be faked with a pedal, it is all amp. I judge amps by how well it does both clean and dirty because after playing for 50 solid years, I use a lot of clean tones these days and every day in my career.

I’ve got the predecessor and it has a great clean channel, can even pushed to that slight break up thing.
