Many schools actually tell you to practice your punches and kicks until you can achieve a speed where your gi makes that snap sound when you punch/kick, the louder the better!

The tonfa is a formidable self-defense weapon indeed. It occurs to me that a man with a (mere) knife, in any attempt to stab, would have little chance against Oshiro with the tonfa.

Anyone who's practiced Karate can see the high, middle, and low blocks and strikes transfer to Tonga very well. And you can see he even points out you have to use a vertical fist to strike and pull back since a tradition underturned fist will jab the tonfa into your stomach. Would love to see a seminar or participate in a tonfa class for a day!

I do Cheifa no-Tonfa Kata (Isshinryu Karate) in tournaments and win pretty much every time.. I love the tonfas and have a custom made pair. Definitely my weapons of choice

Every nation has some stick-fighting tradition or the other. Quarter staff, Lathi, Bo etc. This is a different weapon which uses the straight punch with the Tonfa. However, the Tonfa loses out on the swing which standard stick-fighting arts provide.

Tonfas also give better blocking ability at close quarters. This is good for prison guards, since prisoners (usually) only have access to concealable weapons.
