So if an opponent hooks his foot/leg behind one of yours. It looks like the worse thing you can do is to stand up? Unless dude Standing up does a backside 180° overstep pivot getting positioned passed the arm grabbing the back of your uniform? I'm just spectator viewing thoughts for whatever comes instantly to my mind sirs. I do not know the art in any way for real.....

I don't quite understand the first part of your comment, but if you backstep as the bottom person I reaching for the back grip you'd basically be giving them that grip. Or, if you backstep hard you're giving them the space under you hips which then can exploit with other guards if they're savvy. Also if you try to backstep from there they could probably square back up to you with their collar or sleeve grip
