That’s great to hear! I originally made these to help my patients be able to follow a home exercise program for that reason. Thanks for sharing :)

@@SpeechSecretsAnd thank you so much for your amazing videos! I have a brain injury and I have been on a feeding tube for 7 years. I don't really have the energy to go 3 times a week anymore speech therapy so I really enjoy being able to do this at home! I can't thank you enough.

Nice session. Amazing how little attention I give to these muscles; ALS complicates it.
@SpeechSecrets28 күн бұрын
That makes sense. We don’t generally think about muscles of facial expression, talking or swallowing until they are compromised.

Does it also helps in reducing stammering and stutter. Please suggest.

No, these oral motor exercises do not have evidence for improving stammering stuttering.

When a person whose mouth is twisted more to the left or right side of the face due to a stroke , should that person concentrate on exercising more on the affected side than the other side ?
@SpeechSecrets Жыл бұрын
Sorry for the late response! In general, I have people do these exercises in front of a mirror to make sure they achieve symmetry on both sides. The affected side might fatigue quicker and recruit other muscles to do the same movement so it is helpful to look at a mirror to get that visual feedback. I generally have people even with unilateral weakness do these exercises bilaterally for the range of motion, but agree at times the affected side needs more focused depending on the exercise.

Use your hands to pull the tongue to the left and right. That’s what my speech therapist advised me and it works. My swallowing has improved.
@elisarudgers19393 жыл бұрын
I love your videos, but do you have any pre-exercises for those of us that can't get to the tongue lateralization or or quite strong enough yet?
@papichoku2442 Жыл бұрын
My speech therapist recommended using the hands to pull the tongue since I have difficulty sticking it to left and right. It works for me and my swallowing has improved.
@SpeechSecrets Жыл бұрын
What a great recommendation! Yes, using the hand to help the body relearn movements it may not be strong enough to do independently is a great tool.

This is a technique I often use with labial retraction to help the affected side retract for a smile.

cant move my tongue to left and right, is it possible to pull or push it with tongue depressor?
@papichoku2442 Жыл бұрын
Use your hands to pull the tongue to the left and right. That’s what my speech therapist advised me to do. It has helped improve my swallowing.
@SpeechSecrets Жыл бұрын
That is a great idea to assist with the movement! Your hand or a tongue depressor could be used while trying to move it in that direction.

Hi. My voice is breathy and low. I've been to different ENTs, but no one really knows what's going on. Tests I've had come back normal. My volume is low.Any advice?
@SpeechSecrets Жыл бұрын
I can’t give person specific advice, unfortunately. People can learn how to use their voice differently to change the tone or quality with therapy. I would be curious if something caused this change. Would try to find a speech therapist that specializes in voice for this. Your ENT may be able to recommend one.

Hi Ruth, thanks for sharing your experience. Unfortunately, I cannot legally make any person specific recommendations. But I would definitely talk to your physician about treatment options for sialorrhea. Hoping you find what works for you and I’ll put some thought into a video on treatment options for this in the future 🙌
