Oh man I had a crush on Toni Tennille in the 70s, when I was just a lad. She was ebullient, cute, and unapologetically herself. And those moves. Oh. This is a great behind the scenes glimpse, down to the model of the set.

The song "Dance" was written and released as a 45 single by Paul Jabara in 1976. In 1978 a jazz duo changed their name to Paradise Express and jumped on the disco bandwagon and released their version of "Dance" using Two Tons O' Fun (Izora Armstead & Martha Wash) as the background singers. Would have been interesting if Toni had done a medley of "Dance/Can't Stop Dancing". You can get some of these 70's variety shows on dvd now- Capt. & Tennille, Sonny & Cher, Donny & Marie, Brady Bunch Variety Hour, etc. "Variety Shows" were to the 70's what "Reality Shows" are to this generation. EVERYBODY had one.

Is fascinating reading up on Tony Tennille and watching some of these videos on KZbin. She was highly underrated. For many years I taught Fitness classes at a local gym. The gym switched from freestyle aerobics to the Les Mills programs and you were given every quarter a new release to memorize. You had to memorize the 12 tracks of choreography to the music and be spot-on at any place in the music and of course it wasn't intricate dance numbers, it was just step aerobics. Cannot imagine the work that goes into producing a dance number like the one featured here. It used to take me hours and hours and hours to learn a new release. Guess some people are just gifted in that way with memorization and dancing. They make it look effortless and as Illustrated here Toni has to sing or lip-sync while keeping straight her dance routine. Quite impressive!

Toni's talent and potential was undermined and restricted by the goody two shoes image. She gave us a lot but could have given us much more.
@ericholck39142 жыл бұрын
I agree, and I also think she got a rather late start which worked against her. She was already in her mid-30s by the time “Love Will keep Us Together“ came out… I’m sure that didn’t help her marketability.

I think Tony Tennille is one of the sweetest ladies I’ve ever seen. I do have a question though some of these shows were really cheesy. For anyone who was an adult back then did they seem cheesy back then as well? And I don’t mean that to be a put down anyway I just mean it just seems very cheesy some of it.

@SayItAintSo4real6 жыл бұрын
That's what most people of her generation did. A lot of today's 78 yr olds stay in bad marriages. I think it was just the times and culture. That "Til death do you part" thing was very overrated. It's sad how many older couples I know who are still together but love between them left years ago. Maybe it's all the trouble of splitting up the material assets and finances, too. Idk, but for their ages & generation I don't find it surprising.

A relationship is something unpredictable and fragile between two people and can go through so many phases. The physical part can come and go. It isnt the whole enchillada... That doesnt mean you cant feel a deep friendship, spiritual bound and respect for each other...

Not really. She said that during the time she was with him, she was the most creative. If she was not with him, she would not have come out with those love song lyrics that she wrote, and wrote them really to try and get through to Daryl.
@rigormortis4146 жыл бұрын
Everybody seems to think that maybe Daryl was gay. However, I think the possibility exists that he may simply have been totally asexual and had zero interest in intimacy. Ironically, rumour has it that Toni is the one who's actually a closeted lesbian and has been secretly carrying on with a lover for quite some time now. If it's true, just goes to show you: the world is full of illusions and sometimes things aren't always what they seem to be.
