Coin Hunter I appreciate that you subbed to me found my first silver in a coin roll dime hunt today didn't get a box but it's a 1961 dime I crapped my pants when I saw it first silver Yay

What you and a lot of others don't realize (probably because no one ever told you), is that older coin collectors (like myself), always load up customer rolled coin rolls with silver dimes, war nickels and wheat/indian head pennies! I've even done a few silver quarters before. We do that to get others (mostly the young), to get interested and excited with the hobby. I will on occasion, even put them in pocket change that I use for purchases. Now, the reason I'm telling you this, is so that you do it every once in awhile, to get others interested. I generally put common dates or coins that grade fine or below, back in circulation. Perhaps you'll amass a big collection and do the same some day! Let's hope so! TC

I recently bought $40 of quarters and $20 of dimes from my bank. There wasn't a single pre-1965 among them. I'd say coins are very well picked over by now.

15K dimes to reroll; ouch! I know nothing about the value of clad coinage. What’s special in recent years? Go for halfs. I have gotten lucky just by scanning the wood coin trays tellers use in small branches. If you see something, buy the entire tray load. Once, out of $26.50 in halfs, most were 40%, with 3 ‘64s. $18 were silver. Snipe good auctions with poor names/descriptions on eBay. I remember as a teen in the ‘70s seeing $1000 bags selling for less than $2000; way beyond my means back then. I did find a dealer at the weekend swap meet that sold circulated Morgan’s for $3-4 for most years. Some were really nice, AU+ . Instead of candy and sodas, I’d spend my allowance on them. I still have them. I just wish I had kept it up the last 45 years.

Some info for you and other viewers, specific to dimes/10-cent pieces: - the 1964-d Roosevelt dime, while incredibly common (highest mintage of any silver Roosevelts at 1.3 billion) also has a recognized double-die reverse (DDR) error variety. In high grade, it's valued at $100+. A 1963 Phila. issue also has a DDR error, but worth less money at $25-50 in high grade. - clad coins arent necessarily "toss-aways" in that a couple of errors/varieties exist, one of the more well-known being the 1982 no-mintmark issue. In grade with a strong strike, it guides for $150. - Lastly, Canadian coins contained at least 80% silver content through 1964. From 1965 until about halfway through 1968, the silver content was reduced to 50%. Midway through 1968, silver was eliminated completely and the coins instead contain 99% nickel.

Pretty sweet finds. Is it normal to get about 1-2 silver dimes per box? I only hunt pennies and nickels currently but am thinking about getting into dimes.

So ive done this about five years ago and made some money doing it. I found that the plastic coin rolls were easy to spot silver dimes without breaking them open. Then id just replace them with a regular dime and exchange them for a new box lol
@sparkyjones5606 жыл бұрын
I did this since a kid probably about 15 years and when silver was about peak in 2011 I sold it all. Was 10 rolls of dimes and 6 rolls of quarters and some strays. Made good money that day. Haven't done it again since though. Been thinking about it but it's so much time consumption getting them, searching them, getting rid of them, repeat. Seems easier just to buy some commons from the coin shop and sit on them instead and save all that time. Seems about right going through a couple grand in dimes and finding 12 silver.

This looks pretty cool, but you gotta weigh your time vs. the potential pay off. After you break open all of those rolls you then have to count and repack them in new rolls, or take them to a coin star machine which will get about 10% of the value... so unless you can get at least one in each roll, which I highly doubt it, I have to wonder whether it's worth the trouble. But hey, more power to anyone who has more time than money and doesn't mind the work. :)

You take the dimes, put them back into your box, go to a local bank, and ask for them to deposit it. At my bank they take the dimes behind the counter and run them through a coin counting machine, which will then give them a number and they will give you the option to withdraw, deposit, or do a little of both. Don't take your dimes back to the same bank you got them from. It's just rude. I recommend having 2 bank accounts, 1 bank for a "dump bank," and 1 bank where you dump your coins. Some banks do require you to put them in customer wrapped seals, and if they require you to do that, I recommend you find a new bank because that takes forever.

The auto-coin master machine at the local market charges %11 percent to spit out a cash redemption ticket. %11 seems a little high. I wonder if anyone would actually be making any money on several silver dime when we have to pay a premium to get rid of the non-dime dimes.

Having worked at multiple "cashier" jobs when I was younger, the way we opened the rolls, was to smack them on the corner of the counter, much much quicker.

Oh you'd get a huge kick out of how people react when they find older British/Foreign coins in the dirt here in the Continental US. You see; until 1857 we didn't have very good minting in our little, growing country...so we allowed the use of all types of currency issued. Since it caused too many fights/creed related issues and the exchange rates weren't "Agreed" upon like now, we finally managed to do so. It's also why there are often so many different die varieties of older coins (my 1847 has over 70 if I recall, and their quality control was garbage). So all of those foreign coins prior to 1857 were turned in for US money, and they tend to be rare. Ironically they tend to be pretty deflated once they realize they're often not worth a lot more than silver value but, so it goes. The a good bit of the"Oak Island" treasure might have actually been spent well before 1857 as if it were just pocket change.

@ctuan134 жыл бұрын
Clearly you're not familiar with coin roll hunting and the frequency of silver coins in circulation for the various denominations. $500 quarter boxes, probably will take more than ten boxes to find one silver. $250 dime boxes, usually average about one silver per box. $500 half box, usually average 5-10 silvers per box, most likely to find mostly 40%ers.

@DustyNonya6 жыл бұрын
Actually it can often depend on how well you search. If you look for errors and other coins that the real coin lovers appreciate then you'll always come out ahead. Plus most people tend to forget it's not like you "lose" the money you don't make money off of...it's still money. So if you don't find enough silver in an entire box to find gas money then you're probably not getting more than 40$ worth, or it's all in pennies (lol).
