I played one fretless with a rosewood board and roundwounds for just over 20 years, last year I realized that after 40+ re-levelings the rosewood was getting perilously thin and I made the difficult decision to change to flats on that particular bass just to preserve what was left. I chose the Ernie Ball Cobalt Flats as they claimed to sound just as bright as rounds and to my amazement the sound was actually pretty close, It didn't take more than an hour to get used to the feel of them, in fact I've actually grown to really like them. They do respond differently to dynamics, and don't expect to be popping too many sliding harmonics, but as a way of preserving a cherished bass I highly recommend them.

I hear you all the way. My Firm Fretless (rosewood) had a very light epoxy coating applied (by my tech) about 20 years ago. We thought we’d get a couple of years from it. It’s still going strong. I cannot play flats. I don’t use the bass too often. Mostly at home for recording.

@@FretlessMonster with flats it’s more the feel than the sound that is the problem. Sliding your fingers results in a stuttering drag! I tried ‘Fast-Fret’ liquid but ughhh.. it’s just not Rocknroll !

@@ArtbyJoeH I have EB Cobalt Flats on my Lakland fretless with an ebony neck. It came with rounds, but immediately took them off, thinking a fretless needs flats. The Cobalts sound very similar to rounds. I do find that I can actually play more smoothly on roundwounds and it's easier to slide. The flats have more surface area and sometimes, especially if I use too much pressure, my finger stutters on the string, just as you said. After watching a handful of Tony's videos, I may just give rounds a try.

i started doing this, it's very easy and helpful. and as someone also mentioned, it's a good idea to cover up anything to prevent the steel wool AND the ebony dust particles from getting in/all over. ALSO, i recently met someone who is severely allergic to ebony wood dust, won't work with it. it is apparently easy to acquire a sensitivity to it, and it even possibly mildly toxic if inhaled regularly, so if you do this regularly, might be good to wear a respirator or some kind of face mask.

Hey Tony, I'm a fretless guy too! I just had to redress my fingerboard last night, it is an epoxy coated rosewood fingerboard. My homeboy had played it with bad technique, (bending like a fretted instrument.) Hi Tony, thanks for this video. I've just used this exact same process, down to the feed and wax as a final step to refinishing my fingerboard, which had about 2.5 years of gouges. Prior to the wire wool and feed n wax, I'd used varying grades of sandpaper and a radius block to get the board closer to where yours was at the start of this vid, using chalk marks as a guide to see where I've been so I didn't focus on one area too much! I'll be way more confident next time, as it turned out great, with a more uniform growl and mwah all over the neck. ✌

Do you always use round-wounds on your fretless basses? I was told by someone many, many years ago that it'd be a bad idea because it may ruin the fingerboard. Obviously that's not entirely true, as you're using them. Personally I've always loved the silky feel of flats anyhow-even on fretted basses, haha-but I was just curious if you _always_ use rounds and if they do eventually eat away at your fingerboards on your heavily-played basses. I always use flats on my fretless (and am converting my fretted ones to flats as well). I bought a five string G-style bass online, and it came with roundwounds, so I figured I would leave them on until I was ready to change to flats. I don't notice any difference in tone at all.
@bveracka
@bveracka 2 жыл бұрын
@@MrChopsticktech I have always been a big fan of flats, and I put them on nearly every fretted instrument I have. I also play guitar, and I put flatwound jazz strings on most of my guitars too. They sound mellow and warm, and they don't make the scratchy sound! Still, it sacrifices quite a lot of brightness on both bass and guitar. The only tech problem I run into with flats on my fretted basses and guitars is-after many months of playing-they get very small dents and/or flat-spots on the underside where the string meets the fret, which affects the sound. Usually happens first on the lower fret spots of E and A strings. I've only had one string start fall apart due to that sort of wear in almost 20 years though, and that was after years of playing on the same set of strings. On fretted basses, I replace flatwound strings about every year if they're played regularly. Finally, there are a few companies who make these sort of semi-flats that have ridges but are still flat. I think some are sold as "tape wound"; not sure, haven't used them in a while but they're great too!

Yes. Though it’s slightly softer than ebony so I would do it in baby steps.

How long does a fretboard last on a fretless?
@FretlessMonster
@FretlessMonster Күн бұрын
The fingerboard lasts a lifetime. I have to clean it up every three or so years depending on usage.

absolutely use the same treatment that you have my Fretless basses,, fretless fingerboard maintenance is a far cry from a Fretted bass,,, constant maintenance but we love it 🥰

Tony what strings do you use on your fretless bass?

DR Strings Sunbeams. For 30 years. Love them! They’re rounds. Cannot get my sound from flats

Tony, have you ever tried epoxy on a fingerboard?
@FretlessMonster
@FretlessMonster Жыл бұрын
I have epoxy on my firm Fretless - which has a rosewood fingerboard. It had worn down to virtually nothing so the epoxy was to literally save it from a complete replacement. We thought it might last a couple of years. That was 20 years ago and it’s still doing well. Typically I’m not a fan of epoxy as it adds a high end glossiness that I’m not fond of. Ebony doesn’t really need it anyway in my opinion - even with round wound strings.

At first I was thinking, why the glove? Then I realized those hand are probably worth millions. Gloves? Damn right!!!
@FretlessMonster

Ah. Not sure about that. 🤩🤷‍♂️ (But thanks!). But my hands can get dry and crack doing this. The steel wool is course. Plus it can be hard to grip. The gloves seem to help 👍🏻🙃

Ebony dust and any exotic wood dust can be very toxic ! you should wear protection while doing this, as you're in fact inhaling it for sure if you're smooth sanding. Cool video otherwise Take care

I had my Wal fretless fingerboard done 3 times until eventually there wasn't enough indian ebony left to remove . Couldn't afford a new fingerboard so I had it fretted🥴 roundwood strings and a heavy grip... I've changed my style since!

Ahh that’s too bad. Over how much time did this occur. Ebony should last decades. I use rounds too, and I dog in!! They may have taken too much off each time. Not that it will change anything now. Sorry about that. 😒

@@FretlessMonster first time probably..3 years from new. First job was done by a guy from Overwater basses who'd done it for Pino Palladino previously. There's digging in with your right hand for more bite, . ( My left, being a lefty) but it's the heavy gripping of the fingerboard hand that did the damage. 😔
