My mom worked at a Nascar store back in 2000, thought it was the coolest thing ever as a kid, I was just 11 years old, the day before on July 6th we went to target and I bought a Kenny Irwin 1/64 scale diecast car with that beautiful Bellsouth paint scheme. But I remember the next day she called and told me he was killed in an accident. Only saw him race in a few races, first race I ever watched was the 2000 Diehard 500 and Irwin finished 4th that day. He would've had a long and solid career, maybe he would've been a champion too. He was a true racer though and I haven't ever forgotten about Kenny Irwin after over 22 years as a fan of this great sport.

I hate that watching these conversations about loss are so compelling, but they are. It brings the human side to these figures that you mythologize from your favorite sport, and Jr's unfortunate and unique perspective about dealing with tragedy in the public eye gives him such insight when talking to others about it. The conversations are totally natural, totally honest and intimate. I'm really glad he is willing and able to put it out there like that and bring out the thoughts of others on similar situations. This vid is probably not the best example of all that. But generally there have a bunch of them that were really interesting.

1993-94 and 2000-2001 were awful years to be nascar fans. Like so many of you I witnessed one of these tragedies as I was at the 2001 Daytona 500. It is such a shock to the system to be so cruelly reminded about the dangers of this sport. I think these conversations are important though because even all these later it is a part of the healing professes while also remembering these lost drivers.

I've been a NASCAR fan my whole life (I'll be 36 in December). I've never been laid lower by my love of the sport than the day Kenny's accident happened. The day before on a return trip from an appointment my father had in Atlanta, he stopped at Walmart and let my brother and I each run in with a few dollars. Well for me that meant 1/64-scale race cars. I got Wally Dallenbach's Cartoon Network car and Kenny's Bellsouth car. Had it less than 24 hours and that happened. I know in my heart it didn't matter what car I bought, that throttle still would have stuck on the 42 car, but to this day just hearing his name gives me pause. I know what I dealt with as a fan is nothing like what Kenny's family or his crew like Tony and everyone who knew him went through, but it was hell.

I was so sad to see his wreck. Then Petty died the same way and I think when Petty died, it overshadowed Irwins death and you didnt hear much about it after that. Both very sad incidents and that sticking throttle issue. I remember Jr was starting to have that issue right after those two deaths. Actually going to Dale Sr and telling him that no one is listening to him. @rykami14 Жыл бұрын
The crazy part is that Dale's death wasn't even the catalyst for the changes, it was Blaise Alexander's crash in the ARCA series towards the end of 01 that forced NASCAR to implement the HANS and start the safety changes we have today. It's a real shame so many talented drivers had to die in order for those safety features to be implemented, but I guess that's the way it goes sometimes.

NASCAR is headed into the same territory(serious injury) with the next gen car. Drivers are taking bigger hits! A lot of the harder hits are due to higher corner speeds! I'm curious to see what the Gforce's where on some of these hits' NASCAR needs to bring the speeds (especially in the corners) back down!!! A "good race" is a good race @ 130 mph the same as 160 mph, just less chance of serious head injuries.
