Two men, filled with regret and guilt for what they turned out to be, in their individual lives... but the particular common ugliness that they share here is, being the type of men who are capable of the grizzly murder of a person they knew, as he begged for his life--pathetically, and then, can sit and eat good, and have lively conversation about their shared past, without even skipping a beat. It's interesting that Tony suddenly asks a personal question about the existence of God (of all things) soon after having just murdered a man. It hints at different possibilities. One such possibility is that Tony is inspired by the murder he's commited to reflect on the possibility that the Judeo-Christian God he's been raised to believe in might judge him as evil some day. It's also possible that Tony actually wants to confront Pussy here and ask him outright if he's working with the federal government but instead loses courage and quickly represses the thought; he's then left with this hasty random topic about God instead. After all, a throughline in season two is that Tony realizes Pussy can't be trusted, but his love for the man as a friend prevents him from fully admitting it to himself. Either way, that look of fear in Pussy's face when Tony suddenly calls his name is just flawless acting.

The first season of True Detective is one of the best seasons of any TV show I’ve ever seen, just as good if not better than season 4 and 5 of Breaking Bad and I never thought I’d say that. However I lost interest in True Detective midway through season 2, maybe it’s my fault but I just couldn’t get into the story. I think the question about God is Tony’s guilt showing itself. The belief that someone is seeing all you do, and will hold you accountable for it.
@sonicextremities95702 жыл бұрын
Or it could have been a subtle knock against Pussy (who at this point was known to possibly be a cooperator) from Tony to try to guilt him into maybe confessing to something or giving a tell that would prove to Tony that Pussy was running his own radio broadcast

Good catch. The taxi cab gives it away. The other cars would otherwise be coincidental. I wonder if they just used stock film of a old timey steakhouse.

I always find it interesting how Tony was well aware for months that pussy was a rat and just refused to accept it until he had no choice because pussy made it to obvious. It’s funny how much this compares to literally anything after season 2 when Tony is at his worst on an episode by episode basis and even worse, eventually killing Ralph over a fucking horse lol.
@JAMJAMUNO2 жыл бұрын
The first time I watched through the show, I thought he killed Ralph over Tracee. Now I think he was just genuinely that upset about the horse rather than it being compounded with everything else.
