I'm sure he did a lot of mistakes trying to nail again the tricks, and still continued to try until he achieved them. We just can't really understand how much willpower he had, even today The legendary first 900 was achieved only at his 12th consecutive attempt (I think), that's some heavy spirit

Completely different line of athletics, but Triple H in pro-wrestling said something similar after he had a nearly life-ending cardiac event, had to retire and have a pacemaker put in and everything. An interviewer asked him if he regrets having to end his pro-wrestling career in that fashion, to which part of his answer was, "I wanted to run it till the wheels fell off... wheels fell off." It's healthy when athletes can recognize it's time to hang it up, otherwise you get goofy shit like Brett Favre or Tom Brady trying to prove they still got it.

Some say Rodney Mullen is the “lord of the board” or king of the board itself because of all the flat ground tricks he does, but still Tony can do some difficult flat ground tricks but have never seen Rodney on a half pipe.
@KingPinniped
@KingPinniped 6 жыл бұрын
Mullen invented a staggering amount of new flatground techniques to the extent where many of Hawk's inventions were actually vert adaptations of things Mullen created. He's the one skater where the entire sport would have been dramatically different and/or slowed in progress for many years without him. It is beyond compare, and I say that with full recognition that Tony is a legend in his own right.

3:25 What gets me about this moment that keeps getting rightfully discussed in the comments is just how raw it is. If you actually look at Tony, he's old, he's tired, and he's clearly having trouble both standing up and walking but as soon as he gets on that skateboard it all just dissipates. He's truly legendary.
10 ай бұрын
I think the walking is partly due to the killer pads pro he's wearing ^_^ best cushioning around, but you can't really straighten your leg comfortably. He's still pretty spry, even now after that nasty fracture finally healed, and this video was really shot during a 6-week period. But yeah.. the pain tolerance this guy has is admirable.
@pgVeritas
@pgVeritas 9 ай бұрын
He’s not old! 50 is (was) young. He’s kept his focus, his self belief, his skills and his courage. I’m 61, had a total left hip replacement in 2017. Was told at the time (in 2017) I needed my right hip doing. I still haven’t had it done because I wanted to max out my left hip. I need two shoulders replacing, my right hip, and last June (2022) I had 5/7 cervical vertebra reprofiled and 2 discs C5/C6 and C6/C7 removed. By Sept 2022 I was back on a football (soccer) pitch playing with men half my age. Some of the players were signed to Premier League teams as youth players and I’m still scoring, and matching them sprinting. They call me Robo-Pete and are all inspired by my not giving up, going through the pain barrier and still getting stuck in at 61! Now, why do I need all this surgery……skateboarding. I’m not pretending I could even tie Tony Hawk’s shoes, but back in the day, I was on a British G&S team that toured California and competed against Stevie Caballero at Campbell, Skatepark (he was skating for Santa Cruz) Eddie Elguera (inventor of the foot plant) the Z-Boys. (I skated with them at Arrow Wolverhampton and Skateside Kettering). I was the fastest thing on 4 wheels at tight slalom. Tony Alva,, Jay Adams, Chris Chaput etc, saw me beat Bobby Piercy at Stateside. He was on his Turner, I was on a board I designed and my woodwork teacher made using individual willow, ash core laminates with an oak outer facing. My manager bet his £1000 I’d beat him….and I did. I stayed with Paul Sims (Tom Sims’ dad) and George Powell in Santa Barbara, just before he started Powell-Peralta. Now I’ve still got the Ray Bones Rodrigues 30in deck, with ACS Lites (the first magnesium trucks) and Powell mini-cubes. The wheels and deck were given to me by George himself, and Paul Sims gave me a pile of stuff too. Skateboarding died out in the UK with the parks closing. I was going to uni and it all ended. It was a fantastic time for me, but my legacy is arthritis and a lot of fantastic memories of skating with and against the top pros. I came across this video and I thought of all the crazy things I used to do……they’re nothing to what TH and the current very skaters can do. Hats off to TH, a legend, an inspiration and it seems, a nice guy too.

@TheRickyp83
@TheRickyp83 6 жыл бұрын
No, it's not still like that at all. It's true that it use to be up until the early 90s. Back then companies were kicking guys off by their mid 20s because skateboarding was progressing so fast that most weren't able to keep up. Street skateboarding was something brand new and new tricks were constantly being invented. Guys at a pro level weren't able to keep up with the young bucks that were hungry and constantly pushing the "sport". All that changed around the time Mike Carroll and Rick Howard left World Industries to start up Girl Skateboards. From that point on the industry changed and adult pros weren't instantly done away with once they got to a certain point anymore. From that point on, it pretty much became totally about marketability. If you still have a strong fan base and your boards, shoes, etc are still selling then you can stay pro for years, decades even. There are several pros from the 90s that are still pros today and they're well into their 40s.

Even attempting those tricks at 50 is a feat in its own. Yeah when your 12 yrs old weigh a buck o five, limber, good bones, developing muscle structure it’s a no brainer. But for him to even ride a 1/2 pipe in his 50’s is simply remarkable. I grew up watching Tony hawk and the Powell Peralta team, ( look it up) as I to was riding 1/2 pipes and going to skate parks at that same time frame. Those were the good old days.

@@kojok4667 Tony Hawk takes the nod for father of the sport imo. Rodney Mullen, and since many more have displayed incredible talent. Skateboarding, more of an art form than a score-able sport in its nature, has produced many great talents. Tony Hawk is Goat Status though. It wasn't "Rodney Mullens Pro Skater." No disrespect to Rodney, he was more talented. It's Peyton Vs. Brady Syndrome, Lebron v. MJ, etc etc

@@nickmorris56 this just applies to who you talk to and who knows. tony will be the goat of vert and Rodney will be the goat of freestyle two different styles that created a movement into two different forms of skating. as far as the "pro skater" its a game that was made by tony to expand himself as an entrepreneur during his stardom which gave him a massive following which made him more distinguished at the pinnacle of skating.

I haven’t skated in almost 20 years, back when Tony hawk and skateboarding was in its prime. Bought a board today to try again at 33 years old. I can still Ollie and kick flip but imlost most of my moves. It was my life from like 10-14 yrs old. Not since 2003 have I touched a board

Tony has affected my life enormously. His skating created a guiding star for me as a 13 year old (in 1987) and I have kept following him ever since. If you read this Tony, you are awesome. Wish I could come by your place and have a beer with you sometime and talk about skating from the 70’s until now.
