I moved to Canberra 11 years ago. I visited all of Canberra plus Queanbeyan in a week, mind you I was only 25. I eventually grew to love Canberra and now I call it home. I wouldn't trade it for anything else. When sun goes down on a week day the city sleeps on weekends the city is alive.

Canberra is one of those underestimated places. There is more happening there than you think but you need to look a little harder and have wider interests than in the bigger cities. BTW I've always heard two theories on the meaning of Canberra, first that it means 'meeting place' which is why it was chosen and second, the place between breasts. Perhaps it simply means the meeting place between two breasts. We should refer to Canberra as the bosom of the nation. May she nourish us all.

When I was young, the 80's, a group of 5-10 of us, from all around the world, spent months living and working in the country side and bush of Canberra working on conservation projects. Each Friday we would shower and dress in clean cloths riding into Woden singing "Woden Woden Woden" to the tune of Raw Hide. I miss those days. Actually I just realized my profile photo is from Canberra.

Crazy how much development has changed Canberra so quickly, especially the nature spots and mature trees - most seem to be gone now and more planned to be taken down. A lot of the old buildings also taken down without warning or consideration, and WBG's vision isn't even being acknowledged in the development process anymore - the government only cares about the money, not about the heritage and sadly no-one is stopping them. Actually quite painful to watch this now.

A local here. I've heard family members from out of town comment on all the "millionaire public servants" from Canberra. I don't know one. Most are lower paid staff. And there's lots of people not working in the public service here too. And no, I don't see politicians everywhere I go. They come from everywhere else in Australia. They're the locals in other communities. The communities that like to complain about Canberra.
