More so than many other stars, Tony Slattery will always be associated with a certain time and place. Friday nights, somewhere in 1991, on Channel 4.

He mentioned in one of the first few answers about clothing that he ‘used to do judo a lot’ - when in fact he was one of the youngest ever black belts and was in the junior GB team. Then the host actually asked him a different question later on and mentioned his Black Belt, and he seemed very honestly uncomfortable that she mentioned it. Humble guy at heart, even though his persona was so hyper and talkative. A complex, beautiful man, in multiple ways… RIP Tony. One of the best of us.

yeah its so sad what happened to him. I just read a Guardian interview where he pretty much says he was sexually abused by a priest when he was 8, which might be why he always had a bit of darkness about him, behind the laughs

`Really nice guy. Bright. Witty. I think even this performance is a bit 'off the wall'. I see bits of myself in Tony. He was a genius who perhaps found life around him a bit slow... so it became testing? No idea if I am right. But then again, based on my experiences of seeing a psychiatrist, they don't know either. In fact, it seems to me most of them only became psychiatrists to answer their own questions. What matters most here is Tony was a decent man? The answer is yes. And bright too! I hope he had some enjoyment, but he is like me. He seems to spend more time tormented than happy.

With hindsight, you can see that his bi polar played a large part in that. He suffered terribly from it. So many performers have it, but his was exceptionally bad. It does make you wonder who the real person actually is beneath it all.
