The giveaway for Tony’s demise was in the very first episode. Dr Melphie: “what do you think happens when you die?” Tony: “I think that everything just goes black. You were here, and now you’re not...”

The give away to the ending is in the very first episode before that comment.....why is Tony at Melfis in the first place? Because he......blacks out. It starts with blacking out, it ends with blacking out and as Melfi discovered and subsequently stopped seeing him, a sociopath cannot he changed....and nothing changes, Life goes on and Tony blacked out at the end, showing nothing has changed

Thank's ' this is well explained especially when you mentioned where the explanation comes from. Before this l allways thought the guy in the member's jacket was some how some one related to Richie . In the series Richie used a members jacket much like this hit man , same color too. Richie had this look in his eye's like if he wanted to waste Tony Soprano so fricken bad he could taste it. All in all l'm sad the show ended this way and very sad James Gandolfinni passed in 2013.

Also that the episode is called Members Only and the guy who whacks him is wearing a Members only jacket, and also the intro song of the first Episode vaguely describes the people that dies as 7 deadly sinners while we see them on camera and talks about death

The ending was initially frustrating to me but after time I realized that if Tony likely whacked did we really want to see it? Did we really want to see his family killed or the reactions? Here we are talking about it 20 years later. There are definitely signs throughout the series and the episode so people watch again. It has to be hard to end a series but I’ll take this over seeing a murder or Tony’s arrest though the first time I think I had a Paulie reaction.

There's so much I cant remember it all... the lights reflection in the glass which is italian for something death(cant remember) 3 failed parking attempts, 3 bites of onion rings, guy comes out of the bathroom at 3 oclock (tell pauly and tony 3 o'clock) BIGGEST of all what's Tony's favorite scene of the godfather? Tony also walks in and sees himself sitting there wearing a different outfit (outfit he was shot in with junior). Just like Chris said, you get whacked every night. Also, when tony came out of his coma, everything was white. Now its black. It's also a theory he died when shot by junior and dr Melfi is his way of trying to redeem himself out of purgatory. One more funny thing, the athletes painted on the walls of the restaurant. "Never had the makings of a varsity athlete." Also Tony and Bobbis convo about death. Chris also was killed by Tony at 3 oclock. David said if you pay close attention to the episode its ALL there. Show is so incredibly deep. You'd never be able to rewatch it enough times to get it all

True story: the actor who plays the mysterious “shooter” is actually a pizza shop owner from Bucks County, Pa. I worked at the local paper when this episode came out, and we interviewed him and he had absolutely no idea if his character was actually supposed to kill Tony. I forget the reason he was picked for the show. From what I remember, he wasn’t an actor. Pretty random.

Imagine poor Meadow walking in the door the instant her father's head is blown off, & blood sprays onto Carmella & AJ. That would've been HORRIFIC for the audience, that's why they went this direction. I reject the notion that David Chase chose to end the series by misdirecting the audience with a bunch of red herrings. He's said that there is an ending and all the pieces you need to figure it out are there. The signs are pretty damn clear if you analyze the last few episodes. I think leading the audience down a path only to leave it ambiguous would be silly and not his style.

@@motelghost477 Well that's because religion is comfort, not truth. I wish what you believe was true, I truly do. How great wouldn't that be? But I'm not able to force myself into believing something so far fetched and unlikely, without any real evidence, just because a lot of other people believe the same thing. I just can't lie to myself.. or I can, but I would never really believe it.. That said, I'm sure someday soon we will be able to create an afterlife, stop ageing or something similarily world-changing(there's no physical law, to our knowledge, saying we can't manipulate our existence). But that will be made possible through technology, not prayers and faith. So I think we should focus all our belief towards science and to make our own heaven, instead of dreaming about something not real, and waste time or opportunities.
@crs2385
@crs2385 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheBozn Well i can categorically tell you that i believe in an afterlife because i'm convinced there is one. Not because i'm ''forcing myself'' to. I'm not. Anything that's beyond the realm of science is considered ''far fetched'' if you restrict yourself to the scientific realm, and don't think beyond that. There's plenty of evidence of an afterlife, and the supernatural. I've had my own encounters, from ghosts, signs from dead loved ones that cannot just be brushed off as ''coincidences'', apparitions ect, and many other people have had these encounters. The problem is atheists don't allow themselves to believe in the supernatural because it's not scientifically proven.......well if it was it wouldn't be supernatural. It's funny you mention religion, and how it's a ''comfort''. Well i for one am not religious, i'm spiritual. I don't follow a specific religion, and i base my POV not on ''comfort'' but on experiences i've had, my parents, and people around the world who have had their own experiences with the other side, experiences that are beyond what science can put to bed. Oh sure, science may offer explanations for those experiences, but those explanations i find are usually weak, and are a reach in terms of fully getting to the point of the experiences at hand. If you don't believe that's fine, but don't speak for us believers, and tells us we're ''forcing'' ourselves to believe, or that it's just to ''comfort us''. There's allot more to it than that.

@Beetlejuice Who is "they"? Pat Parisi was the only one who knew of Tony's location because his son was dating Meadow. Pat Parisi avenged the death of his twin brother and had Tony killed, and to add salt to the wound he stole Tony's family from him, especially Meadow, when his son got with her. Tony won the war against Phil, demons from the past were the ones who got him.

@Beetlejuice So "The 5 Families" that never appear on the show took the hit out? Patsy didn't do it for New York, whether he was targeted or not makes no difference. @Beetlejuice Little Carmine was comedy relief the entire show, he said dumb things like that all the time. Paulie didn't have that in him, he never wanted to be boss. He didn't even want to be "Captain" of one of the crews at the end and Tony begged him to take it otherwise Patsy would be Captain and Paulie hated the idea of Patsy as Captain so he acceptd. That was Paulie's last scene. Paulie wasn't killed by NY because he wasn't seen as "leadership". Patsy set it up with his son, they stole Meadow from Tony, the person Tony loved most, and then had him whacked. Revenge for killing the person Patsy loved most, which was his twin brother.

Some say the members jacket guy was a clue as to who killed Tony. That it wasn't New York family like you would assume but rather a friend or relative of Eugene from Tony's crew. Eugene hung himself since Tony wouldn't allow him and and his family to move to Florida after inheriting 2 million from his aunt. Certainly Eugene's family would have felt much bitterness after finding him hanging in the basement. They had the extra money to hire someone to hit Tony but I'm sure his son or other relative would gladly do it for free. Vito made fun of Eugene wearing a members only jacket in the episode where he hung himself after being rejected by Tony and that episode was titled "Members Only"

Honestly...if she didnt open her mouth to AJ about their dad and his involvment in the family...he wouldnt have gone into that downward spiral that eventually had him wanting to kill himself... All tony ever wanted was the best for her and his son...he just was the type of guy who grew up with the belief that a man showing emotion was a sign of weakness...and so he is forced to show his love in other ways. Granted they may not have been the best or conventional ways.....but he was the type of guy where you HAD to read between the lines in order to understand him. For christ sake he crunched a guys fckin teeth out because he spoke very crudely to her. Yeah He played it off like this guy is harmless and that he was just being an idiot cause he was drinkin....but inside....you can just sense that he was going down a list of what would be the PERFECT act of satisfying retribution for the honor of his precious baby girl.

Then there’s the Wire which came out in 2002..another show that people still talk about..but they talk more about the brilliance in details in the show and how everything connects more then the ending itself. That scene where Silvio is talking at dinner and blood sprays on his face and his ears start ringing because a guy got whacked is how they show you you don't hear the shot that kills you. In this case he never saw him coming.
@willferrell8524
@willferrell8524 3 жыл бұрын
Great analysis, mark, and i'm now convinced that you've discovered a crucial, repetitive structure to this scene by Chase. The ringing of the bell attracts Tony's attention and causes him to look up to see who is entering the restaurant. The camera angle changes and the viewer gets Tony's perspective of viewing the individual or individuals entering. That pattern plays itself out repeatedly throughout this scene, as if Chase is saying to the viewer that this will indeed occur throughout the scene since Tony is going to be somewhat apprehensive due to the recent New York resolution and wanting to ensure his and his family's safety by constantly checking who walks in that evening. When Meadow enters the final time, the door bell chimes and we, the viewer, should expect to see Tony's perspective from the same camera angle. If you watch, Tony does look up and we should now see Tony's perspective by virtue of the camera angle and we should see Meadow coming through the door. Instead, Tony's perspective is immediate blackness and silence -- there is no other meaning other than a bullet entering his skull from the 3 o'clock position.

Eh. I don't know. It maybe be a fake out. The scene could be just showing that Tony has to live the rest of his life constantly on his toes, scared of getting killed at any moment and...that's the uncertainty in a black screen. Will he live or will he die? He doesn't know, we don't know either.

But then he was at a little breakfast diner and thought that it would be much better if he did it there. So he was planning on killing him from the get-go but they went with the view from his perspective going black because of what he said earlier in the series about not hearing it happened not knowing it happens just blackness.. now personally what I would have done is have him look up and have the camera see meadow smile and then all of a sudden a quick look of terror before blackness. But that would make it too obvious and would take away the beauty. But he's definitely dead it's not even questionable

Perhaps him looking up is symbolic of him being aware. Him being aware, from the first episode, has been one of the things that kept him alive. He was either ahead of the curve and/or just being aware of what could happen. He didn't often get taken by surprise and when he did, he got out of it alive. I think he lived.

Sevv9220 No he didn't live. The darkness is him dying. But he's either in limbo or reliving this moment in hell everyday. Always waiting to see Meadow, but dying before he can. In season 2 episode 11, I think, Chris said , while he was near death, that his father has to relive his last day of his life for eternity, always losing a card game to the Irish and then getting whacked. At the beginning of this scene Tony walks in, looks around and all of a sudden in a split second he's sitting down.

I think you're right on the money with this analysis. I think that one of the most disturbing things about The Soprano's portrayal of the life is the sociopathic detachment leading up to a murder. So many times, the tone in the car ride is jovial and status quo. Then a guy gets whacked. We only see it from an outsider's perspective, so we see the killer's detachment and lackluster reaction to death. We never really consider the experience of the deceased. Chatting with your friends, then darkness. Abrupt, unpredictable, disorienting. Tony got whacked like all the rest of them.

This was one of the most innovative endings of a series. The hackneyed and cliche ending [avoided here] of the character, bloodied, lying on ground, with some goofy song plays in background, while camera zooms out implying 'life leaving body' is a typical 'film school' handling. Walter White's demise in 'Breaking Bad' did not maintain the creativeness of series. By contrast Tony's demise did compliment series. Chase deserves credit.

Yeah, at first I couldn't believe it, I had to rewind it a few times to make sure what I was seeing was the truth. I hated it. I couldn't believe they would end a series like that so abruptly with no closure of anything. However, the more I thought about it, the more I realized that if you were to get shot in the back of the head, that's exactly what would happen. You would just be sitting there having dinner with family, then the next moment, just nothingness. We were experiencing this scene as Tony and it kind of gives me the willys that things can just turn off that fast for each and every one of us. After realization of what happened, this ending made me feel a unique emotion that I can't say any other series ending has and for that reason I think it's a really good ending. I liked Breaking Bad more than the Sopranos but BB's ending was pretty predictable and didn't really make me feel any unique emotions like Sopranos' ending did.

David Chase gave us the ending of The Sopranos. He didn't leave it as some sort of "mystery." Theorists have come up with a million 'possibilities" as to what what REALLY HAPPENED but that's the genius of it. Chase simply killed Tony off and everyone ran wild with OTHER theories. creating a sort of worldwide hysteria. And THAT in itself was genius. Because we were given the ending, but simply refused to accept it.

There was that episode where Tony, Bobby and the wives were at a lakehouse (the episode where Bobby beats the crap out of Tony) and the boys discuss "probably never hearing it" when you get whacked and when Tony is down by the lake smoking a cigar alone, he keeps looking up at a docked boat that has a similar sounding bell as the one in the diner. While I agree Tony was killed here, I still find this scene a little perplexing. Tony obviously saw the hit-man and if we in the audience saw this guy as being suspicious, Tony must of saw it also. In fact his "radar" must of been off the charts with this guy. Yet he did nothing to protect himself, and even if he simply didn't care anymore, he still cared very deeply for his family. So why would he allow his family to be in the firing line? The hit-man could just as easily taken out the entire family while taking out Tony. Putting his family in this kind of jeopardy just doesn't seem like him.
