Deleted scene analysis from 2 years ago on r/thesopranos: "The first time I watched this scene, I mostly got the surface level stuff - the dynamic between Tony and Carm. Tony explains to Carm that the family will have to 'lam it for a while, since NY is systematically eliminating high-ranking members of the NJ crew. She can't run away from this, or deny it, or push it to the back of her mind. The risks of her husband's occupation are now in full force. She knows people will die. I started thinking, why is Rosalie even in this scene? What's the point of her being here when Tony and Carmela are having this convo? Then I noticed how the camera cut back to Rosalie during T + C's conversation, and what she's doing when the camera cuts to her. As Tony is giving Carmela the details of the situation, Ro' is sitting down, smiling, and going through old photographs. Not a care in the world. I think the reason Rosalie is here during this conversation is to contrast Carmela's current predicament with Rosalie's situation. Carmela is scared. She has to leave her home and go into hiding. But Rosalie is all smiles, reminiscing. She doesn't have a mobster husband anymore, or a wannabe-gangster son, or a mobster boyfriend. They're all gone. There's no risk to her anymore. She's already lost everything, so she doesn't have to worry about going into hiding, or concealing stolen cash, or the eventual phone call that her husband was arrested/killed. She has already suffered through the scenario that all mob wives fear the most. The only way for Carmela (or someone in Carmela's position) to achieve happiness and eliminate the fears from happening...is for them to actually happen. It's only once you've lost everything that you have nothing more to lose, that your anxieties are eliminated and you can enjoy the small pleasures that you are left with. That's what Rosalie represents in this scene."

@Fivestarman8710 ай бұрын
Great point. Rosalie doesn’t have to worry about such things anymore - Being a mob wife comes with perks, like lavish vacations. It also comes with the real possibility that at any moment you have to drop everything a run to a safe house. Carmela has her world swing from carefree to crashing down in an instant. For Rosalie, the worst has already happened, and she is free to continue happily reminiscing about her vacation.

I just noticed the dynamic between Tony and Carmella, how Tony's not really understanding Carm. Their communication is askew. It starts when she figures out that Tony is the target. "You mean they're after you!" she says, and he says "you and the kids go, I'll be somewhere else". She was afraid for Tony, but Tony treats her as though she's afraid for herself. He assures her that she won't be in the line of fire. She panics and says "Oh my God!" and he says "Families don't get touched. You know that!" and she gives him a look. She's realizing that he doesn't understand why she's upset. She asks about the details. "Where am I gonna go? Where are you gonna go?!". He tells her where she's going but not where he's going. This annoys her, because her real concern is for his safety. He figures that she is annoyed by the inconvenience, and becomes angry, and suggests she go to a hotel if she doesn't want to go to the other house. This shows the fundamental flaw in their relationship. There is evidence to suggest that Carmella believes in, and feels, genuine, romantic love for Tony (and other characters), but Tony, doesn't understand it or believe in it. He characterizes Carmella's attachment to him as something else. Something that's purely self-serving. She's there for the big house, the clothes, and the life of leisure and luxury, he tells himself. He attributes all of her motivations to material ends. He demonizes her to justify the way he treats her, and she lives in denial because leaving him with just the kids is too hard.
@randallmadison99103 жыл бұрын
Truth in your analysis. But, Carmella did like the lifestyle provided through Tony's blood money. A psychiatrist told her the same early in the show. Just before Tony arrived, she and Rose were reminiscing over their trip to Paris. She was proud of Meadow attending prep schools and going to Columbia. But, that doesn't mean she didn't have some love for Tony other than materialism, but materialism was a big factor in her staying in the marriage.

You guys are forgetting that she just went through hell with Tony after he was shot. I don’t think she thought tony being hunted was shocking, it’s just one thing after another, the walls are closing in. Carmella isn’t innocent of course, but she got her act together, and I bet you’d be under a lot of stress knowing you have to drop everything and go off the grid. She was just told her brother in law was dead, one of her best friends husband is in the hospital on his death bed, they’re after her husband, and she has to abandon ship. Quite honestly she’s being relatively calm.

Edie Falco's reactions in this scene are so phenomenally well calibrated. When she first finds out/realises the main details of the situation (Bobby's death, that they are after Tony) there is such horror in her eyes, she seems on the brink of an outburst. Then, she quickly gets herself under control, the horror is still there, but you realise that she had been preparing for this moment psychologically for years. She understands the situation and her terror is controlled only by the need to act.
