I saw the final concert (after the workshops) - Herbie Hancock (piano), Miroslav Vitous (bass) and Tony. He played recitently (I think due to poor acoustics in the hall) this night, but on such a high level. One of the greatest musicians of the 20th century!!!

I know they say "the gift" is just the drive to learn and develop something but I truly believe this man was given the tools at birth to master the drum set. He was made to do it and I believe this happens in all facets of life. You can work on the skills needed all you want, but man, there needs to be some god given talent to reach the level of Tony. Pure and simple. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure tony worked his ass off but I don't think that's all it takes. Great post, thank you for sharing !

does anyone know what he's talking about with the high hat around 1:01:56? Im not sure if thats the sound of his heel tapping on the floor in between the high hat notes and hes saying to keep it even or is he actually playing with his hand or something??? confused

it’s the hi hat and bass drum being feathered, or played lightly. Right foot left foot, repeat. No hands. he’s illustrating that’s the kind of independence exercises that he is rooted in and that are foundational for time and coordination.
