I saw Tony live in Florida circa 1980 as part of the VSOP Tour. Tony began the concert with what amounted to a TEN MINUTE drum concerto. To this day that particular performance remains in my memory as the gold standard regarding the art of Jazz drumming.

Probably the BEST video of Tony in his absolute prime. Great shots of him and his hands. There has never been another drummer quite like Tony. His single stroke rolls and double stroke rolls are simply perfection. So balanced. And his dynamics have never been equaled. I didn't know what a flam was until somebody wiser than me said: Listen to Tony WIlliams. Then WATCH Tony Williams. You will see it executed as if Tony invented it. This is historic and so incredible. Masters all on one stage. Thank you so much for posting this. Simply mesmerizing.
@Oneness1005 жыл бұрын
Have you spent much time examining Cobham during the same time period? Cobham was doing rolls, rudiments around the kit like a machine. But I live TW. He has more of his personality into his playing which can't be matched. But Cobham has his own uniqueness. Both are different but equally insane to listen to and watch. They both had similar, yet different approaches and ya gotta love both of their playing. They were both breaking ground during the 70's.

What I loved about Tony Williams was the fact he did not dismiss other styles of music such as heavy metal. In fact I remember him talking about seeing the band Anthrax and liking the drummer Charlie. I loved that he always had an open ear and an open mind.

Unlike Buddy Rich! I love Buddy, but guys like Elvin, Max, Art and Tony were far more creative and musical. Buddy Rich was amazing, but all solos told the same story. All speed and glory. What do you guys think?
@shaktilydian72374 жыл бұрын
@@goesjem Agreed Buddy was amazing too and def in top 10 best drummers any style but Tony Williams was a hell of a lot more of a GAME CHANGER on the instrument . Far more musical and creative in every drum solo. Buddy was very repetitive

This was a group called The Superstar Quintet. While both groups at this time would have Ron Carter and Tony, this group, The Superstar Quintet, featured Kenny Baron instead of Herbie Hancock, Joe Henderson instead of Wayne Shorter or Branford Marsalis. While Freddie Hubbard of course did his share of VSOP, at this time, VSOP featured the Marsalis Brothers, with Wynton on trumpet and Branford on Sax. That's a long answer to a short question! Love the musicality! Definitely tell this was during the Buddy Rich era of drumming, which is not a knock on Tony, just a jazzy style of singles / syncopation that is similar to Buddy. Maybe I'm not on the mark, but I hear Buddy's influence in some of the improvisation.
