I have had my DE5000 for a few years and have been very happy with it. I have mostly used it to measure components for RF filters I've built for the 2 - 30 MHz range. It was very interesting to see your comparison of the different brands. Thank you for the thorough approach at testing and also for sharing the results.

Thank you! .. yes i hear from many the DE5000 is a winner still after many years of use. so the DER EE is a save pick for sure , just also wanted to know if the newer stuff would perform good. it was all very close, but in the end real quality wins.

I have the der ee for a few years now, it has been super reliable. I modified the leads to 4 wire clips and have nothing but good things to say about it. The battery lasts a long time and for a hobbyist is perfectly good. When I bought it was cheaper, however mine didn’t have the plastic case. I wish there was a lcr meter that would measure leakage at high voltages…

Hey Tony!

I know a few people that use the little Peak meters, and they are quite popular... Perhaps now that you've built up these results you can add it to the table in a future video. They seem to be quite accurate and they are easy to toss in a bag. Thank you for your efforts with the LCR meters, this has been invaluable and really informative for future purchases.

Tony Albus what a tonic' my top go to creator to chil to, always seems to be as happy as larry at the bench; i applaud your work thank you; i have always wondered as to why der-ee has still not addressed this ongoing issue of lead length and simply passing it on to the consumer ? ; now you are saying there is a sort of general sweet spot when by using lower frequency i'm edging towards the east tester for its i screen clarity.

Very thorough results! I had same questions about accuracy of my et432. I only have one lcr. I have a nanovna v2plus4. I read that capacitance and inductance should be measured at 90 degrees, minus and plus respectively. The vna shows how the resonant frequency is approached, which confirms need to use lower frequencies for larger caps. I follow this rule when interpreting the esr readings. Of course, being able to match circuit frequency is best way to assess a component. The vna with its different measurements across different frequencies is the best way to develop understanding about these passive components impedance behaviors.
@TonyAlbus
@TonyAlbus Күн бұрын
Thanks! oh yeah that is a great solution to also use the VNA... indeed.

Note the Hantek 1833C goes to 100 kHz, and measures low pf caps with stability. As you showed, it is possible to get nonsense sometimes, so there's a real difference between measuring a known, like you did, vs. an unknown quantity. What seems to works well when measuring an unknown is to first check the measured reactance, then set frequency to get a reactance near one of the range settings. The 1833C will give very nearly the same result over a wide variety of f and range settings as long as range/reactance is ~ 0.1 to 10x.

One thing to take into account with measuring capacitors is that there is a inductance in series (either in the capacitor winding, or more common just the loop it makes with the connectors). As the capacitance is -90 and the inductance +90, these are cancelling each other out. Of course, that is maximum at the resonance frequency, but before that, the capacitance is getting "eaten away" by the inductance.

Thanks a lot Tony! That makes the choice more difficult indeed but I'll probably stay on my first choice (the DER one :) Another question, I used to calibrate the Agilent tweezer with the proper spacer (equal length of the device to test) for open and short, probably giving better resolution for frequencies above 1MHz. This spacer was delivered in standard with the Agilent tweezer set (see images of Agilent 16334A set for instance to see that spacer). I was wondering if trying to do the same would improve further more the results?

@@TonyAlbus Watch out, because the table is showing ohms in straight lines, but if you take capacitance it goes downwards as the tick marks indicate. So 1µF capacitor at 1 kHz is solidly in the 0.2% 1µF with 300kHz is 10% according to this graph.

I found a DE 5000 through the Japanese website sales in Japan. Are selling for between $95 and $108 US.🇯🇵 Only after it goes through a second or third-party vendor through another company being resold, they put their mark up on the product then the price goes up to $199 US . So by locating and sourcing through a Japanese reseller, direct delivery has much cheaper

Nice video. I bought LCR handheld meter from BK Precision. It looked like reputable brand and i think that is only you can find with good name a reasonable price..even it wasn't cheap at all and was for sure more than 180.. but yes ..in general up to 1kHz is all you want to measure anything more has no sense at all or has special purpose but for general capacitors and resistors and such.. 50/120hZ up to 1kHz is ok to go

After graphing many different results, I have found all my LCR meters start losing accuracy above 1 uF. By 47uF, 5% under. By 1,000 uF, 10% under. I'm using 100 Hz and Series for these measures. It's disappointing because I can go grab an inexpensive multimeter with capacitance mode and get a more accurate result for capacitance value. Then I need to verify the quality factors with one of these LCR meters. It would be nice to have all measures accurate in one unit. What is your experience? Do you have or have seen an electrolytic capacitor tester which does leakage test?
@jspencerg
@jspencerg Күн бұрын
It is my understanding that one must apply rated voltage to capacitor to assess its leakage current. Lots of examples available for that measurement.

Electronics Old and New channel has a few videos on building a DIY high voltage capacitor leakage tester. I'd guess that if you are commercial entity that wants to measure this, either you are a highly specialised company with so much many you can buy anything to measure it, or in fact, it's never worth your while measuring it, instead you A) design around normal specs B) simply replace any caps wholesale, do not bother measuring such things, waste of time. This means there's next to no [affordable] instruments that would be available to buy to do that measurement.
