@@TonyAlbus I only recently replaced my old Fluke 12 with a new Fluke 117 as i sometimes like to play with AC and the none contact voltage detection is superb, hopefully it is somewhere near accurate for my needs. I am currently looking for a budget Scope for occasional use.

@@gtretroworld Fluke is a solid choice ofcource for DMM. for a scope maybe look at a Siglent maybe, you cou;d regred later if you go for a Hantek or Owon... compared to Siglent its just leggy, i never regretted buying a SDS1202X-E as my first new scope. its worth the extra money

That graphical dmm is pretty nice. You've shown how choosing a good reference is another rabbit hole unless one is ready to plonk down the cash for calibrations or expensive standards. Repairs of electrometer reminded me of need to adjust different scale references. I built my version of the esi sr1050 transfer standard using 15ppm resistors. Now the 10,5 and 2V references can be scaled to the lower voltage ranges. Of course that led me to the fluke 5100 which is the newest calibrator I could afford.

Thanks Jeff! yes the Keithley is amazing, i wanted one for years and years, and then the prices went up and i stopped looking. but the more i saw the device on other channels the more i still like dit, it so fast and powerful, crazy fast sample and lost of memory..and on top , so easy to use, its ful of trick , i think i only know 10% of what it can do. The 5100B is a great device, and indeed just 5Volt for calibration is not enough for all ranges. but this tool is great for a quick sanity check of the DUT

Nice to see they are continuing to improve the unit. I have a version of direct from America, but the capacitance and inductor board is always out of stock whenever I look on Welectron, so just treated myself to a version 8.

Did you put your DMM6500 on 1G impedance to read the battery? As long as it's in some box to protect from air currents it should be almost as stable as the zener. Before buried zener references completely surplanted them, they used to use a battery! A Weston standard cell. You had to read it only using differential null technique, because any current drawn from it (even using a 10M impedance voltmeter!) could obviously change the value.
@TonyAlbus
@TonyAlbus Ай бұрын
Left the Multimeter on 10M .. that was the point... using the references i also did. a Weston battery .. okey.. will need to look for that then :)

Old Escort 2030 gives much better stability after warm-up (last digit fluctuates on 6.5 Fluke 8846a) . But it has only DC and square AC. Definitely DMM_Check is very good solution for 4.5 DMMs.

Hi Tony! Thank you! But isn't LT1021BCN8 with 5 ppm too little for a 6.5 digit DMM's? I mean is a great tool for handheld DMM's but for a 6.5 digit shouldn't be used at least a reference with LM 399 as is found inside the DMM's?

I've been debating making affordable resistance standards since I have the entire lot, here, down to 0.001%, and the large ESI 242B bridge. I wonder if an oversized resistance standard would sell if it was priced for the amateur workbench? The problem with many standards is keeping the shop the correct temperature.

Building the device is not such a problem (although designing it for the best possible operation requires a good bit of pre-existing knowledge). Getting access to 3458A 8.5 digit DMM and accurate LCR meter to accurately measure all values within margin of error.... now that is more what you are paying for.
@TonyAlbus
@TonyAlbus Ай бұрын
It also about build quality itself and mostly the calibration, not just the parts.
@stevenbliss989
@stevenbliss989 Ай бұрын
@@ivolol Not as much as you might expect. 0.1% & 0.05% are cheap and easy to get, check out LCSC. V references are easy too. But capacitors and inductors are hard & is only practical to use NPO for caps & measure it! Inductors are less hard, but still can only be done by measuring it! So I partly agree, but the 8.5 digit DMM will not help with the caps and inductors, a high end LCR bridge needed, and although they claim 0.1%, I doubt it!
