Awesomeness galore. Great to see a shout out for the little T3i. My first "real camera" was a used T3i from a pawn shop years ago. A GREAT starter DSLR, especially for the price. I think it's best to start on a camera WITHOUT a touchscreen to help the operation and handling get burned into your muscle memory. Not that I don't love my touchscreen now! Like my very first car, I have fond memories of the T3i, even if it wasn't the fanciest thing on the road.

Yes! What a great video. As the resident gear nerd in the family my entire Thanksgiving was spent getting asked "What Camera Should We Get" from everyone in my family. I already send everyone that asks me that to your channel but now I can send them straight to this specific video. I would absolutely love to see a yearly or bi-yearly version this video. BTW I've found parents like the idea of buying your book for their photo-obsessed kid for Christmas. I always recommend SDP as a stocking stuffer.

I'm very happy to see the a6000 on the list here since that's the camera I decided on a year ago when wanting to more properly get into photography. Especially since I find that landscape is what I enjoy shooting the most, though I didn't know that when I got the camera. The first extra lens I've also got for it is the Sigma 30mm F1.4 Contemporary DC DN. It might not be a typical landscape lens, but it's appears to be the most affordable fast and sharp lens you can get for the system.

That Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8 Sport is awesome! I love it on my D810 and D500. I've basically put aside my 70-200mm 2.8 ever since I got it. A plus is you get to build your arms and shoulders while shooting.

What do you think about the canon 80D. Also what setup would you recommend for someone vlogging on KZbin as well as doing tech reviews
@joebeard73878 жыл бұрын
I opine the following: so only 1 Pentax recommended and that a full-frame camera, showing as about $2,234 but that might be body only. I saw a video on the new K70 where the quality of the video looked excellent, perhaps you could review it. I realise frame rate affects use for sports, but for outdoor photography surely weatherproofing is a plus and with Pentax comes image stabilisation in the body. It would be very interesting if you do a weatherproof cameras review. I realise you did a great waterproof ie underwater video, and my compact Fuji works well there and also in rain. Before I bought my Pentax K-S2 after watching your review and others, I was going for a Canon but was unaware whether they did weatherproof.

Hi @Tony - I sold my Nikon 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR lens as I found the zoom-throw is rather long. It takes almost a 180-degree turn of the focus ring, to go from 200 to 500mm. This makes it far less suited for shooting birds in flight (BIF) and therefore I prefer using my 70-200mm f/2.8 VR II Nikon. The Nikkor 200-500 is still a fantastic lens, especially for the price. Made in China - yes, but optically rather great. Ideal for stationary wild-life, large beasts etc. Should I look at getting a 1.4x/2x Teleconverter instead for my 70-200 Nikkor? Thanks!
@Musicaadorecchio8 жыл бұрын
one thing that is clearly understated when talking about the marvels of mirrorless cameras when shooting videos is the difficulty of keeping their sensor clean. This is vital, since every time a lens is changed with another there is a high risk of dusk landing on the sensor, because the sensor is not protected by the mirror (as in the DSRL world), and as such is exposed to outside agents. There is no easy solution to this issue, because even to a close inspection to the sensor, dust can be difficult to be scanned and removed, with the result of possible visible artifacts on the highlights of a shot that can be vastely ruined. Another thing to keep in mind when judging mirrorless cameras like Sony A7 series, is that their native optics are electronic. This means that if a follow focus is needed for precise focus, you can't use it. Tracking focus in manual mode is different every and each time, and can't be repeated the same way twice in a row. DUST and MANUAL FOCUS TRACKING are issues that are easily dealt with in the DSRL world.
@morganm33628 жыл бұрын
Antonio PX1 I believe some of Sony's new g-master lenses have slightly improved focusing. It's still all electronic so you can't exactly make marks on a follow-focus, but it doesn't seem to have that effect where the speed you turn the focus determines how far you've turned it as well.

I have the Sony A7rii and never had any problems with eye focus and found it very reliable, not sure why the sony's weren't mentioned for portraits, just my opinion but I'm very happy i swapped from a dlsr to the sony A7rii, just being able to see real time exposure, bokeh, eye focus and how sharp the photo's are, is for me enough to keep me with the sony A7rii

Nice recommendations Tony, pretty well covers just about every use case out there. I have a couple D800E's but have not upgraded to the D810 -- I'll skip that and see what comes next. My last flagship camera, the Canon 1DsM2 lasted me from 2004 to 2012 so I expect to go to about 2020 with the D800E's. Also have the Inspire 1 Pro and have an order for the Phantom 4 Pro. The Inspire 2 with the X5S camera is tempting but I'll skip the 2 and probably wait for the 3. The Phantom 4 Pro with higher bit rate and nearly 30 minute flight times may be used more than the I1 Pro.

Hi, First of all love the information you two give out it's been so helpful learning about photography for me. I'm a field ecologist/zoologist/student in Australia and I travel to a diverse set of climactic conditions from rainforest to deserts and get to see some pretty amazing wildlife as a result. The problem is I don't have much of a budget, I would like to ask as someone on a budget who would like to begin taking wildlife, night sky photos, and landscapes how a non-weather sealed camera (I've been interested in the Canon 750d) might hold up against the elements of heat, dust, and humidity. I don't have any intentions of operating the camera and lenses in rain, extreme heat or other adverse weather. Cheers

I just got my first DSLR used from a pawn shop, I traded even for it. It was a Nikon D3100, I really like it, at first I thought it was broke because everything was blurred or had tons of noise but after your help I'm taking pretty nice photos from where I started " I bought 4 of your books." I also probably watched over 40 hours of KZbin vids about photography as well. My goal is to take photographs just cause I enjoy getting out and going places and this gives me an excuse to go and something to do once there, however I would love to be able to make some money on the side since the investment is so much. I don't want to be a full time photographer, I just would like to cover my expenses for the hobby. Should I stick with the 2 lens that came with the Nikon D3100 and move to a D810 for example or could I go ahead and get the DX lenses and then upgrade my body to a 5500, 7100, 7200 later.

What about M4/3 for starting out into wildlife photography and maybe videos as well? It could cost quite a bit less than having an APS-C or FF camera with a long enough lens to get close to wildlife. I know the DOF, low light, dynamic range and maybe auto focus if you want to track a moving subject, may not be as good on a M4/3 camera compared to an APS-C or FF but the crop does make it useful for wildlife. Maybe a Panasonic GH4/G80/G7 and either a Panasonic Leica DG Vario-Elmar 100-400 mm f/4.0-6.3 ASPH. POWER O.I.S. lens or if you have a bit more of a budget, a Speedbooster and a Tamron 150-600mm for a much longer focal length, although I don't know if the sharpness would be as good as using the Leica on an M4/3 body. I have a GH4 and use it for bird photography and videos and find the crop quite useful, even if it would be better with more dynamic range and better low light capabilities, but for starting out, its quite good if you know how to work around those issues and the compact size of the camera and lenses is also good compared to the much larger ASP-C or FF equivalent lenses.
@simianinc8 жыл бұрын
What lens do you use? I have the Panasonic 100-300mm, and frankly, I'm not that impressed. The GH4 has ok tracking, but it's really not up with the D500 or 7D Mk II - I'm hoping the GH5 is an improvement. Would love to try the 100-400mm, but hard for me to justify the cost for the small amount of wildlife I do. Im, not sure I would be happy with the isolation of f6.3, but I'd want to test.
@DynamixWarePro8 жыл бұрын
simianinc I currently use the 100-300mm lens but I agree its not the sharpest lens and DXOMark only rates it as 5MP and quality is lower at 300mm. I would have looked at a better lens at the time I got it, but it was the only one I saw with that focal length with stabilisation. I was thinking of getting the Leica lens, but decided to hold off and save my money and look at getting a new camera next year and want to see how the GH5 is when its released next year, and see if its enough of an improvement in auto focus, has a bit better low light and more dynamic range and more accurate skin tones over the GH4, before deciding anything as I mostly use my GH4 for making wildlife videos and some wildlife photography.

Interesting, learning to use my T3, lead me to this Chanel. So a year later I have a problem. It's the indoor soccer. I got a used Sigma 70-200 F2.8 for $400. Best I can do is 1/640 shutter speed at ISO 3200. I still have some fuzzy issues. At first I thought about going to a F1.8 lens, to get a faster shutter. How ever it has occurred to me, after watching hours of you-tube, that will shrink my focal length. My other idea is to go to a T6s or the T7i. Would this get me to a usable 6400 ISO and closer to1 /1000 shutter speed? Also is it worth the extra few bucks for 24pixels over the 18 of the T6i.

Yes the Panasonic G7 is a great bargain for video, but the new G85 has image stabilization. Seems to me that if you're walking around somewhere on vacation that getting rid of hand-held jitters is really desirable, so while I think the G7 is a fantastic low price choice, I think you should have worked a camera with image stabilization into your higher level video suggestions (nothing against the GH4).

I have picked up two Olympus OMD EM5 for 300 dollars each (One with the kit lens and one without)! I don't see how the EM 10 is 500 dollars, unless it is the mark II. Love the Camera, and the Channel btw!

Question on wildlife and portraits: I currently use a Sony a6000 for mainly street/travel photography and landscapes using the sigma 30mm f/2.8 and the samyang 12mm f/2. What would you recommend as a portrait and wildlife lens setup? Should I go down the used route of a canon 7D w/ 400mm lens, or 70-200 f/4, or should i get the sony 70-200 f/4? Or use the Canon 400mm with a metabones mkIV adaptor on my sony. I would like to eventually upgrade my body to a Sony A7II to shoot full frame.

For reference, living in the UK; Canon 7D w/ 400mm both used £958. Sony 70-200 f/4 new £899. metabones mkIV w/ Canon 70-200 f/4 used £693

Couple of my friends are looking for more budget friendly camera+lens for video or all-round stills+video+sports. While not the cheapest isn't the Sony a6500 + SELP18200 (Sony E PZ 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 OSS) a good all around combo? (of course if sports/fast objects aren't priority one can save ~400$ and get the a6300). Basically I wonder if the PowerZoom 18-200mm is fast enough for sports (being primarily designed for video, and as far as I know it has very decent sharpness and contrast for stills)?

You talked in your videos about using micro four thirds cameras to shoot 4k video. I researched DXO mark and learned that micro four thirds lenses are generally half as sharp as full frame lenses. Their overall DXOmark score is also half that of full frame lenses. . Because of this difference in lens sharpness and overall quality, could I draw the conclusion that 4k video shot with micro 4 thirds is actually more like 2k video when compared with HD video shot with a full frame camera?

Always enjoy watching your guys... What about the 5D Mark III for portrait shots? I've notice you've favored the Nikon for the higher grade quality setups. Thank you in advance for your reply. I'm currently using Canon 7D & 60D with kits lenses... looking to upgrade lenses.

Sony A77 MK11 good FPS plus super focus for sports and also good for landscape and portraits it's not all about Nikon and Cannon.

Thanks for the video. What Canon body would you recommend for commercial photography? Currently looking to upgrade from a heavily used 5DMIII. Shoot 95% product and portrait/lifestyle so the 5Ds and 5DsR are tempting given the large print size, crop potential and increased detail. However with the R I'm concerned with moire from patterns or fabric textures. Also read about needing slightly faster shutters to avoid blur do to high MP count. The 5DMIV looks to have a slight dynamic range edge over the 5Ds/r models and some additional upgrades to AF, touchscreen, etc. 30MP is a nice bump and will add some more crop ability over the 5DMIII however I'm wondering if one of the other models makes more sense or the 5DMIV updates are enough. Thoughts? And thank you!

Tony, My NIKON D70 with its 18-50mm and the 70-300mm lens has supported me well, for obviously quite a few years, but I have been recently considering getting a new camera. Occasionally I have to remove and reinsert the memory card to get the camera to recognize a card is present. This camera does everything I need to do but I would like to have one with image stabilization built it. I really don't need video capability as I have a SONY FDR AX100 this I use for video and a GoPro HERO 4 Black I can use with my 3DR SOLO Drone. Nikon has come out with so many different models that I am totally confused as to what all the differences really are. The marketing department IMHO is having a field day confusing us non-professional consumers! :-) Soooooo, what would you recommend as a replacement for my Nikon D70?

Hey, Tony and Chelsea! I have really enjoyed the videos. I am wanting to get into video/photography/vlogging as I am stepping up from my iphone. I plan on doing some landscape and sport video/photo taking mostly for an automotive blog I am running. The vlogging I plan on just doing for fun and for the blog. Any suggestions as far as cameras are concerned? I have been looking at Canon t6s/70D, Panasonic G85/GH4, and the Sony A6300. They are all in my price range in the used section. Thanks!

Hello Tony, I am looking for a drone to fallow and film things like motorcycles. Size is not a big issue, does the larger ones like a phantom handle wind and move more smoothly through the the air over the Mavic?
@TonyAndChelsea8 жыл бұрын
+Nathan the P4 pro is probably the best choice for that... If you don't have the budget for the Inspire. You will get the props in the shot when filming in the wind.

Hi , Thanks for the helpful video, T&C. If one could obtain a used D810 + 70-200E + 24-70 for the same price as a 5DS-R + 70-200 Mk II + 24-70 Mk II , which would provide cleanest, sharpest images for portraits and Landscapes? Thank you

Hi Tony I love your videos and books. A question I have not seen answered anywhere is how to handle all these pictures from all these devices. Let me add the variables. I take most of the family pictures but my wife and daughter use their iPhones extensively. I also have adult children living on their own. Right now we share pictures by facebook,, Flickr, emailing, sharing the memory card, but there is no central location that everyone has access to and houses all the pictures. I am also using Lightroom to touch up photos so I we have raw and edited photos floating around too. Is there a solution to this? Thanks.

Hey Tony! Loving your show Ive wanted to ask you what do you think about this 2 setup? d7100 +s18-35 or d610+tamron24-70. Dxo says sigma is better optically, does fx makes any difference if Im only concerned about quality? Thanks for the answers, keep up the show Ill always watch you guys :)

Hello Tony, I am getting into photography as a hobby and after spending a month looking at various reviews I have just purchased a Nikon d3400 with the AF-P VR 18-55mm Lens, My question is regarding lenses, I am assuming the kit lens will be fine for quick out and about shots but I am also looking for a couple of lenses that I can use for animals/landscapes and macro shots, however, I don't have a very large budget so was wondering what you would recommend, any advice would be much appreciated also, love your videos, for the last couple of days I have just watched one after the other, even the ones that are way out of my scope

I'm a bit confused by the suggestion of a 600 mm lens as you mention in an earlier video that it is to long for being hand held. Why do you recommend a 600mm now and not the 500mm? For the next time it might also be interesting what a good macro setup would be.
