I know you are the man that can help me with this I have the olympus em10 ii with kit lenses but I run into trouble with low light and it drives me mad so I will use the mft for travel and want something with better iq for landscape and maybe start to get into portrait photography

If you like Nikon and want to do wildlife, the D7200 + 200-500mm + TC14Eiii is a great value in its price range too. Slower burst speed than the 7Dmk2 setup, but way better reach (420-1050mm FF equivalent) and nice image quality to boot.

I went for the Lumix GX-1 body for $96 on eBay. It had only 1600 shutter cycles. A pretty decent bargain IMHO. Having a blast combining this mirrorless body with dirt cheap legacy glass, also purchased on eBay. A nice little set-up for portraits. Some of my deals for legacy glass on eBay: - Nikon Nikkor S 50mm; Nikon F mount; f:1.4; 52mm filter size. Purchased with Nikomat FT N vintage showroom mint $41.00 + $10.00 (shipping). Came with a black leather case that had no signs of use whatsoever. - Konica Hexanon 40mm Pancake; AR mount; f:1.8; 55mm filter size. $23.50 + $5.75 (shipping) - Asahi Optical Pentax Super-Takumar 50mm; M42 mount; f:1.4; 49mm filter size. Purchased with vintage Spotmatic $69.99 + $14.22 shipping - Jupiter-9 avtomat 85mm; f:2.0; 49mm filter size. $19.50+$15.00(shipping) - Canon 50mm (Chrome lip); BL FD mount; f:1.4; 55mm filter size. $25.00 incl. shipping ...and about 14 other lenses (e.g.: Helios 44-2, Canon FD 135/2.5, Vivitar 75-205, OLY 28/2.8...). Most have arrived as expected, with excellent optics. Some required cleaning...but for the most part...with one exception...they are in VG to mint condition!!! Plus extension tubes, focal reducer, and a number of adapters! Sure, I have a Panny lens for daily/nigh-time on the go use, where OIS is a big help. But for portrait and landscape stuff...with a tripod...these legacy lenses are a hoot. I suppose I will try all and keep those I like the best...flipping the rest without any loss.

Hey Tony & Chelsea, great in depth video on what cameras/lenses to get for various uses. I have a question. I am pretty torn and downright lost on what camera SYSTEM to jump into. I have two distinctive needs in a camera system. First theres the system I need in a professional setting (one that would play a large role in my livelihood). Then there's the system I need for more creative and enthusiast driven endeavors. SYSTEM ONE (for work) I need for photographing products (foodstuff, furniture, appliances, sculpture, Etc.) in a studio, and for making large prints of those images for stuff like catalogs, look books, and other marketing materials. Ideally, this setup should also be capable landscapes system. High megapixels and the availability of tilt+Shift lenses is a must. SYSTEM TWO (Travel/ Adventure) I need for travel. Since I might still use this travel photography for some more serious editorial work, I would still need professional level capabilities. This system would be for traveling all over (motorized transportation as well as on foot and vertical travel). As such,I really want a workhorse camera that is light and mobile; with some fast primes to go along with it. A great autofocus system, and good low light capabilities would be pretty important; and I would use this system in two situations: navigating around cities shooting stuff like people, cityscapes, and food; or while hiking, climbing, and kayaking in some pretty remote parts of the world- stopping along the way to photograph athletes in action, interesting locals, and wildlife. I am by no means a pro level photographer (as of yet), and am aware that gear does t make a bad amateur any better. However, I am in a point in my life where I have the time, financial Resources, drive, and intuition to really get into serious photography. As such, I really want a system that o can grow quickly into. Budget wise, I'm looking to spend $12,000 US or [ideally] less. I would be of great help if you gave me some suggestions. Thanks

Hey Tony, recent viewer been making my way through the majority of your videos for the last 9 months or so. Love the videos on OIQ and in general I love the technical component and how well you work it into your videos. I have learned a lot through your videos and have definitely become a better photographer as a result.That being said... I was confused as to why you gave Fujifilm absolutely 0 love on this video. Seriously 0 love.... How is that even possible???? I personally have been shooting for just over a year so I am fairly inexperienced, but I have taken a lot of time to become well informed. I started on an eos m, moved to an a6000 and have settled comfortably in the Fuji family. The advantages presented from the Fuji system are amazing. The beautiful rendition of jpegs out of camera is something none of the cameras you mentioned can do half as well as the fuji systems can. And for those who may not want to slide every photo they take through lightroom it's really a huge benefit. One specific example I want to bring up is the T6i with a nifty fifty for portraits. You claimed the body is $850 used, plus the lens for $110 brings the grand total to just about $1k. I also would like to mention that a huge majority of the money being spent on a camera body which will lose value much much faster than a lens would. Alternatively you could have recommended the Fujifilm X-E1system for about $400 used, and the 56mm f1.2 for about $650 used that takes portraits LIGHTYEARS better than the T6i with the nifty-fifty. Also the majority of money being is spent on a lens rather than the body means an overall smarter long term investment. If you wanted to go even cheaper still!! You could suggest the X-M1 for about $250 used and at this point you are paying even less for a camera that will blow the doors off the canon system you mentioned, for portraits, and STILL BE CHEAPER. So saying that the T6i is the lowest possible value for "serious" portraits is a bit absurd really when you could have recommended a system that takes better portraits for less money while making a more sound investment. To be honest I would love to hear your thoughts on why Fuji systems were omitted from this video, as someone who just found out what they really enjoy shooting with and who isn't far removed from being in a place where videos like this made a huge impact on where I chose to spend my money I can't help but wonder why there isn't a single spot on this video for Fuji system cameras? Thanks Tony and Chelsea, love the video and I will continue to support!

thanks for pointing me to this video... I'm thinking that I will recommend the Pentax K-s2 to my friend, the kit with the 18-135mm lens looks like the most awesome "entry level" DSLR setup... if she can't swing or justify the price, I'm thinking of recommending other K-S2 kits, the K-50(which I have) and the Nikon D3300... other than DSLRs I'm thinking Panasonic Lumix lineup looks nice, the bridge cameras with the f/2.8 lenses mainly. Also looking into smaller and cheaper options with fast lenses and decent zoom range. Thanks again for the input! Loving your channel and book! Keep shining folks!

@TonyAndChelsea9 жыл бұрын
+Regis Nogueira The X-T1 is a bit smaller (though you'd be surprised how large it is). What keeps me from making it the top recommendation for any of these scenarios is the limited lens selection, and the high price of the lenses that do exist. Just be sure you know exactly which lenses you're going to get, and that they're satisfactory. I'll add that it's very difficult to compare that fairly, because nobody (including us) has done side-by-side tests of Fuji lenses vs. the Canon and Nikon equivalents.

+Tony Northrup Hi, I'm planning on upgrading and getting a new camera for wildlife photography. I'm quite new to this field and up until now I had a Lumix fz-200 which gave really nice shots for wildlife - but lot the level I want :). I'm currently trying to decide between the d7200 and the 7d ii. I've watched your videos and I'm a bit confused. Some say that I'd rather go for the d7200 while others the 7d ii (I'm sorry I can't exactly recall which vids - gone through many of them lately). Is that image quality difference where the d7200 is better significant? In addition what lenses would you recommend. As I said at the beginning I never experienced playing with different lenses but I really enjoyed the versatile 25-600mm of the fz-200. I know you said in may videos that the canon 400mm is amazing but I'm not sure I'm ready for a prime lens because I still have a lot to work on my techniques. I was thinking on some sort of 18- +-150 lens and a bigger longer distance one. What do you think.

i think anyone watching these recommendation aren't looking for budget over 2000-2500. Here are few picks: -Fuji X-T10, Fuji X-T1 on mirror less-side compact size. -Canon 70D for video and general all around camera ( prices are stealer low currently) -Nikon D7100/D7200 for sports and second to none image quality. D7200 is better with higher buffer and low lights/ higher iso. D7100 better in lower iso. -Canon 7d mark ii for sports and wildlife, but D7200 can better choice on budget, if it is your first camera. in that price i would pick Nikon D750 (Grey Market) or D610 full frame Camera. - For over all best all around camera its always Canon 5D iii or Nikon D750. - Don't go for Nikon D810 or Canon 5dsr, cameras as your first. Not only camera, you need to get a very high performing computer setup to process and edit those huge files. *Lens is what that matters the most, do your research on lens first, calculate your budget, spend the remaining budget on Camera body. There is no point of spending like hell, just to take few shots in a week, unless you are a professional. And if you are a professional, you probably already know which gear is your next, for around last six months. On budget: -Fuji x-T10 - Get canon 550D used with kit lens. - Nikon D7100 is on steal at adoroma for under 500. Super STEAL! - Nikon d610 or grey market D750. - Canon 70D is also great overall camera, specially for video auto focus. - Anything less, your smartphone should be good enough! Lens, Lens, Lens, Lens, its all about the lens!

I know you have mentioned in your Pentax k1 videos that it is more suited for landscape photography and slow paced photography. What are your thoughts on canon 5d Mark iv thinking about its effectiveness in documentary style photography, wedding photography and landscape photography. I have seen lots of landscape pics from canon 5d mark iv and they look equally good as Pentax K1. Do you have any experience with both of this cameras? Tony, or Chelsea, I'm stuck in deciding if I should upgrade to the D5500 or the D7200. I currently have the D3300 and I wish to move up to a camera with better autofocusing, and bracketing. I'm not willing to move to full frame because of the lenses I have, such as the Sigma 18-35. As a hobbyist, I mainly do landscape and, I am also attempting to move towards wildlife photography. I am not terribly concerned with video work. I understand the D5500 has the articulating touchscreen which looks mighty useful whereas the D7200 does not. Would you prefer having that articulating touchscreen enough to choose the D5500 over the D7200? I also really like that smaller size which could be nice for traveling. However, I did see in your video that Chelsea preferred the D7200 over the D5500 for traveling, why is that? I also understand that the D7200 is currently the top dog when it comes to APS-C sensors and autofocusing. Is it better to just get the current "best" over buying the "middle" camera and upgrading later? I could save some money in the short run buying the D5500, but is that cost worth it if I want to get a better APS-C, equivalent to the D7200 (let's imagine the next gen gets a touchscreen), camera years from now? I know that there's a lot more to these cameras, but I'm betting that you know more about those than I do. Thanks for any responses. ADDED: Don't know if this is important but I am going to buy either camera used/refurbished. I am going to try to sell off the D3300 to help fund the purchase, so I am all in on the new body. ADDED 2: Would I perhaps be better off buying the D5300/7100? I kind of find the buffering on the D3300 to be a little maddening, but it's not the end of the world. In essence, as a hobbyist are the newer models just overkill for the money? According to DxOmark, some of the lenses I have seem to perform a little worse on the D7100 than the D3300. Should I be concerned about this or is this just ultimate nitpicking? ADDED 3: I currently have the Sigma 18-35 f1.8, Sigma 50-150 OS F2.8, the Sigma 50mm f1.4, the Nikkor 35mm f1.8G, and then a Sigma 2x teleconverter for the 50-150. So while I lack a super zoom for wildlife, I do have up to 150mm (or 300 with teleconverter) covered.

Very nice video and lots of good info. Not sure why the Nikon D610 was recommended over D750.. Couple hundred more for a better focusing system and low light performance.
@TonyAndChelsea9 жыл бұрын
+Franky Vee Yeah, the D750 is better than the D610... but $400 isn't a small jump, and most people will get better results by putting that $400 into an extra lens. But if you have the cash, it's a great upgrade.
@petermoeller59019 жыл бұрын
+Franky Vee Here in NZ the D610 is $2300, the D750 is $2800, $500difference. I believe it is important to who you recommend a camera. In my case, I’m into people photography and I do about 50% outside and 50% studio. For my work the D610 is fantastic. Maybe for people who shoot a lot of concerts or similar low-light stuff, the additional $500 for the D750 is well spend, I’d rather invest the $500 in other gear. And just to stress that, I have used the D610 with a 24-70 2.8 or 70-200 2.8 (both Tamron) for weddings in near darkness and focusing takes a second, but catches. And yes, there was grain, but usable images with nice ‘atmosphere’. So the focusing system or low light ability of the D610 is by no means “bad”… it’s just not quite as good as the D750.

I am looking to get into portraits and weddings and was planning on purchasing Canon gear based of my history using canon gear (I do not currently own any gear) and the fact that you stated in a previous video you wanted to use Nikon but could not make the transistion to Nikon because of limits on your lens selection. Pair that with Nikon not working with the radio transmitter flashes like the YN600EX-RT, which I had planned to use mobil lighting. Now I am lost, when your advise is to purchase the D610. I have a $3500 dollars I planned on using to get started buying gear again. Any advise on how I should spend it?

Hi Tony, I opine: with the Sony adapter, I assume the electrics work through because it seems that some of these for other cameras may not? I look forward to hearing from you. thanks and regards, Joe

Thank you for this video! It gave me some new perspective! I want to buy a new camera, can you guys help me? Most of the time i will be taking family pictures (low light - indoors, kid's playing, vacation etc... ). I want something small, with easy to use auto settings (so my wife will love it) and something i can play with as advanced amateur. I'm strugglig with my choice between X-T10 16-50mm, OM-D E-M5 MK I 12-50 mm, OM-D E-M10 MK I 14-42 EZ and A6000. For now the E-M5 is my top choice because of it's body build i like the weight, solid constuction and image stabilization, but other options are also tempting. I'm worrying that E-M5 is much older then the others and it's only 4/3. My priority easy to use and good picture in low light. Budget around 700$ P.S. I know i want all in one but your opinion will be helpfull.

I'm interested in trying out photography using a proper camera but I can't quite decide what to buy so I want to ask for your opinion. It's going to be my first camera so I want to get one that is cheap but worth its price. I intend to use it mainly for taking photos of landscapes and people. I'm still very much a beginner when it comes to photography. At the moment, I'm looking at getting a used Nikon D3300, but I want to get more opinions before jumping into it.

I have a "nifty 50mm" lens and i'm looking for a decent crab claw to scratch the lens up a little. Nothing too expensive just a cheap claw would do. Any suggestions? :) Totally agree on the D5500, i had one and it was mega! Just wish i'd kept it now. For sports (which i predominantly shoot), i'd suggest a 2nd hand 7D and either a Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 or a 2nd hand Canon 70-200mm f2.8 (not the IS version coz you don't need it for sports), a bit cheaper then $2000. I got all my gear, 7D and Canon 70-200mm for £1200 ($1800).

+Tony Northrup Great video Have you tried the new Zeiss Batis lenses with the Sony A7r2? there is 25mm and 85 Or the new Zeiss Loxia lenses? You talked that you feel dissapointed with the zoom lenses, but what about the Primes from Sony? The macro 90mm, the Primes 35mm and 55mm from Sony?
@MyMomSaysImSmart9 жыл бұрын
Their primes are fantastic (also the 90mm macro), but also very expensive. I don't think the Northrups have splurged on those just yet ;)

How does the focusing on the Sony A7R2 with the metabones IV with Canon L lenses compare to using it with the Canon 5D Mark III (or the 5DSR)? I've heard a few people being really happy with the performance of the Sony with the adapter and Canon L glass.

Good suggestions! I'm still wondering between the D610 and D750, is there really no reason to get the D750 for around $400 more? I'm seeing the D610 for around $1500-1600 Canadian and the D750 for around $2000 and I keep hearing the D750 has much faster focusing.
@TonyAndChelsea9 жыл бұрын
+iSOBigD Yeah, the D750 is a better camera... you just have to weigh whether the tilt screen and superior focusing system will do more for you than $400 in lenses (or flash, tripod, etc). Whatever is the most bang for your budget!

Tony Northrup Thanks Tony. I'll wait until the spring and see which one is more worth it by then.

Tony, where would place the Canon 70D with all of the these and what lens would you recommend for general all around photography with the 70D?
@hypnozzz9 жыл бұрын
I understand why you're suggesting a high performance crop sensor for wildlife for getting even closer to the subject than with a full frame body with a same lens. What is your opinion on using a full frame body with a 1.4x teleconverter to "get even" on the field of view? Would a crop sensor body like 7dmk2 still beat it, when considering the noise vs. sharpness? I've never used a teleconverter but recently upgraded to a full frame body and this got me thinking about alternatives if I plan on purchasing a lens to cover 300-400mm areas.
@TonyAndChelsea9 жыл бұрын
+hypnozzz Sometimes, depending on the lens. You'll probably lose AF with a teleconverter, and you probably won't get 10 fps. This has some info: kzbin.info/www/bejne/lYKToXtua9iSbMk

Hi Tony and Chelsea, Big fan of your channel. I don't know if still check comments on this video but I'm just wondering if you would recommend the D500 for any of the categories?
@K-VR9 жыл бұрын
Hey Tony, what should I use for night photography , especially for startrails and milky way
@TonyAndChelsea9 жыл бұрын
+633K-43V3R The most important thing is to get a really fast, wide lens, like the Rokinon 24mm f/1.4 (sdp.io/r24). Otherwise, a full-frame camera is really useful, and a tilt screen will help... so the D750 or a7r II.

+Tony Northrup I am out of luck on the camera department cause I own canon 700D and 18-135 kit lens with 50mm f1.8 so can I get some good pics with this setup or I'll have to buy the one you recommend.

Tony, great video! I would like to throw another category into the mix... concert photography. Low light, flashing lights and of course.. fog machines. I have been using an A6000, with zeiss glass with 16-70/f4. While in optimum lighting, my success rate was quite high and I was satisfied with my images... dark venues unleashed a whole host of nasties. I then purchased a D750, 2.8 glass.. and just could not get the crispy sharp pix i was getting from the cheaper, crop sensor Sony. I was spending too much time in post. I see the Mark 3 in the pit quite often... is there a more budget friendly way to achieve Mark 3 like images? Video is not a concern... thanks
@snotlobber8 жыл бұрын
+mtrac was considering a used d800, 5d mark2, and an eos 70d as possible candidates
@TonyAndChelsea8 жыл бұрын
+mtrac Actually, the D750 with f/2.8 glass (or faster) should have been just about perfect. It should have about 4x less noise than the a6000, and will be MUCH sharper than the fairly unsharp 16-70 f/4.

I bought a Sony A6000 two months ago and shoot my 9 year old indoor basketball games with this frequently. I also bought a Sony OSS 18-105mm lens for it. I do admit I'm not very satisfied with the clarity of the pictures. I'm not a professional but have used an older Canon for sometime until I decided to go with the A6000. The reason I did was because of the weight. Would you strongly recommend the Canon 7d Mark II over the Sony A6000 for indoor basketball photography? Your thoughts please.

@ChillWithMe_musics8 жыл бұрын
If you ever consider buying a 7D Mark II, get the Nikon D500 instead. It has the worlds best autofocusing system, and wipes the floor up with the 7DII on all frontiers, not even close... Get a Tamron 70-200 lens for it (does 99% the same as the Nikon 70-200), and you should have one of the best available indoor sport gear. But honestly, there is no reason to spend like 3000$, when you can get a D5300 for much cheaper (perfectly fine focusing system for cheap). But I still recommend the Tamron 70-200 regardless.

Thank you Tony for taking the time to make this video. I have already bough you camera & gear book and it helped me decide on my first camera(Canon T6S). However lately a friend offered me a used Canon 5D Mk2 for $100 cheaper than a new T6S. Which one would you recommend for someone`s first camera ?
@Gen1gamer8 жыл бұрын
Your basically looking at two cameras one is 8 years old and the other is 1 year. Another way to think about this question is "Is full frame that important?", in my opinion NO it's not. ISO performance is another thing to look at between the two, I get the feeling the newer camera will be the better performer( i encourage you look that up yourself I maybe wrong). Unfortunately I'm not a video guy so the video stats on these cameras I can't relate to if that's what you intend to use these for.
@nelajmario8 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the response. My thoughts were pretty much along the same line. I didn't realize that the 5D mk2 was 8 years old though. Another thing that scares me away from the 5D is that the Mk 2 has bad auto focus in all review videos i`ve seen. The only reason im considering this is because of the full frame sensor is supposed to be much better. Ill stick with my T6s option unless someone else can convince me otherwise. Thank you again.

What are your thoughts on bridge cameras for everyday use? (rx-10 ii, fz1000) The allure for me is always having a camera on me. Even though they have fixed lenses, they have some zoom and are decent quality. I know the sensors are smaller but isn't an rx-10 sensor better than say a t5i?

what do you think of the Sony rx100 I and the rx 100 ii since those are the ones I can afford? I would like to take good night pictures of cars and nature. For low-light,inside churches, and landscape would you do the Sony a6000 over the Olympus 10 for a newbie?
@stevenperry49739 жыл бұрын
If you're primarily taking pictures, I would recommend the Nikon D5300 or D5500, which you can get for around $600. In my experience the Sony does not focus well in low light. Most DSLRs have s better focusing system, and the inexpensive (relatively) Nikon bodies have great dynamic range.
@stevenperry49739 жыл бұрын
Primarily in low light*

The a6000 does okay focusing in low light, but a crop sensor will never give you great image quality in low light regardless.

Uh oh. Just bought a Lumix G7 with the 14-140 kit lens but I don't do huge amounts of video. I am mainly photographing wildlife have I made a mistake? But have I made a mistake?
