Fringing due to dropping the color, is a function (and limitation) of the software algorithm based upon the anti-aliasing (feathered) dynamic mask being applied via the filter. This same effect occurs when masking an object with a predominantly dark or light background. I loved your approach to the problem, and the outcome. As if the shadows from the clouds provided the boundary for the adjustment. This yields a more natural and superior look because the human brain keys on the artificial dissimilarity, but not the perceived changes in brightness due to clouds. Bravo!!!

I really think Tony is the best youtube photographer out there. He really is a complete photographer. He knows how the camera works internally, he knows PS/LR in and out, he knows all about gear and so on. Just complete, no loose ends! I see in many youtube-photographers they're just good at one thing. Either it's the photoshop part or the shooting part.

Great tips Tony, I'm gonna refer this video to everyone who asks me why they're getting fringing and how to fix it. Sometimes the effect you receive from lowering luminance and altering hues gives more appealing colors than using the adjustments inside the graduated filter options. So if that is the case, what you can instead do is bring the photo with adjustments applied and resulting fringing into Photoshop. Use the quick selection tool on the objects with fringing, feather the selection inwards, and copy it to a new layer. Then, just scale it by 1-2% and viola, the fringing is gone. You might have to do a little bit of layer masking on areas of overlap, but most of the time it work very well to remove fringing. I'll do this on landscape photos that have endured a lot of color channel adjustments.

Oh, also going over edges with a -clarity brush can lessen the visibility of fringing. The opposite is also true, so be careful with how much global clarity you add to a photo. It can amplify problems like this.

Thanks, this has helped me with a load of Austrian landscape pics Im working on right now - I had tried doing subtractive brushes using the right hand tool but it wasnt working at all - also btw the 'auto mask' (which i had tried on some trees jutting into the graduated filter zone) can cause those same horrible harsh single pixel ghosting artifacts.

I don't use Photoshop, so not sure if you can do it, but if I were doing this on GIMP, using a layer mask with a graduated transition from black to white I would use the Smudge tool to get the outline of the hills right. I find it easier to get right than using the brush.

Thanks Tony. My favorite way to defringe when the graduated filter is not a viable option (or because the white halo is caused by over-sharpening at the end of your post-treatment), is to use the stamp tool. You stamp the sky and brush the white halo in the "Darken" mode so that only the halo is affected. Have the stamp tool set to say, 30% opacity or whatever looks best. The brush tool can also be used in more or less the same way. Obviously you will have to be very careful if the skyline is made up of a snowcap mountain range otherwise you would also be covering the snow.

Any suggestions for removing chromatic aberration from videos? In Resolve you can play with the splitter combiner node and resize the red channel, but results are not guaranteed. As an alternative you can export videos as tiff files and process them in lightroom and use the lens corrections tool... but this takes long time. Do you know if there is any software that allows desaturating features edges in videos? There is a edge detection ofx in Resolve but I don't know how to translate the detected edges into a power window.

Random question for you, Tony. How far does having fast primes and a mirrorless camera get you? You've mentioned it a few times indirectly, but I was wondering if you could do something more thoroughly on that, or if you already have, if you could point me in the direction of that video. I really enjoyed your old video about the mirrorless system and the issue with the f number needing to be multiplied, not just the millimeters.

Never realized I could use the brush-erase on the graduated filters (doh!). Struggled with this before as I usually bring the highlights down to punch out the sky, but depending on my shot, I'd ruin the darker areas trying to bring up the shadows (I have a canon aps-c camera).
