Thank you from a genuine newbie. This is my first DSLR camera. Thank you for calming my overwhelming sense of, "My God, what have I done!". I loved your relaxing style of teaching, with confidence, and genuine humor. I will be looking for your book. Thank you for the effort of producing a quality tutorial for those of us who are nervously venturing into this world of photography. I went to the video store thinking I was buying a paintbrush. I now realize I have purchased the whole palette, every brush, and gallons of paint, all in one package. Thanks again.

Hi Tony, I just wanted to say thank you so much for all your free content. Seeing your videos helped me: 1. Have confidence to buy my Canon70d 2. Learn more about photography, aperture, lenses etc 3. Take way better photos to the point where random people on Facebook were liking it. I ended up buying your book and it is phenomenal, it's so clear and concise. You're literally my reference point for anything photography related! Keep up the fantastic work sir!

This has got to be THE best tutorial I've seen so far. Wish you covered just a little more, but I have learned so much just by watching this! I upgraded from the T3 to the 70D. Although my pictures have improved greatly, I'm not quite the photographer yet. There's still lots to learn I'm sure. Thank you Tony, I appreciate you taking the time to teach us. Btw, I did buy your book, Stunning Digital Photography, and I'm looking forward to reading it very soon. Thanks again!

Thanks for this very helpful video, Tony. Although I've had my 70D since September 2013, your instructions and tips made me really appreciate this old workhorse. With all of the "latest and greatest" coming on stream, it's nice to know that the 70D is still considered up to the challenge of high quality work.

I am new to photography and have read half a dozen books on the subject. Yours is by far the best! You go in to such intricate detail and cover practically EVERYTHING. I will recommend your book to anyone I know who shows interest in photography.

I'll admit, I tried this video when I first got my 70D, and it didn't really do much for me. Mostly because it was a lot to take on all at once. And, without proper context, I didn't really get what was being said. But I've had my camera for a couple of months now, and now that this all means something to me, this became the best, and most informative video I've found to help me go from auto mode to manual. I can't thank you enough. And if you're watching this video early in your camera's life, and it's just not clicking with you, stop watching, and go play with your camera. Find out how great and limited auto mode is. Doing that will provide you with context. Then come back. This video will make much more sense, and teach you the basics of getting a lot from your DSLR for very little effort. Seriously, this video has re-energized me. I can't wait to REALLY start playing with my camera. I finally feel like I'll actually be practicing PHOTOGRAPHING, rather than just taking pictures. Cheers!

I use it mostly for video though but I wanted to learn all I can about it and this covered all the main things you need to know.

Hi Tony, I often use Bulb mode in live view. You tap the screen to start the exposure and a counter appears to measure the time. When done exposing you tap the screen again, this way there is no need to hold down the shutter release button and you also don't need a timer.

Well done Mister Northrup! Getting the proverbial ball rolling is over half the battle. You do it so well and are without a doubt THE BEST when it comes to "EASY TO WATCH AND LISTEN TO" videos. This is a major feat as I have found many others are unable to speak and/or show examples and do so in a manner EASY to follow. I see folks taking advantage of the TIME and EFFORT you put into the various instructional / informational videos you publish AT NO COST to viewers. Yet, someone always gripes about the very mention of "books / videos" that available to PURCHASE! It befuddles me WHY some folks gladly take advantage of the "NO COST" information, yet balk at INVESTING MONEY in their continued education. It is as if they are saying, "FREE IS FOR ME" and appearing insulted at any mention of "AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE AT..."! No logic from where I stand - none at all.

Thank you so much for this tutorial. Based on your other review videos, I just bought a 70D + 18-135 STM + 55-250 STM from the Canon store (all refurbished) for about $1,000, and they are in immaculate condition. I also grabbed the 50mm prime from Adorama for $125. Now to buy your book so I can really learn the ins & outs. I used to have a Canon EOS Elan film camera, but could never afford to experiment, development costs were too much. Will be much easier with digital, just delete mistakes.

Hey Tony, thanks for the great overview. I currently use an old 350D (Rebel XT) and am saving for a 70D later this year. DxO sadly doesn't list any of them and besides your recommendation @38:50, I can hardly find other good reviews of the Sigma except vor the OS-one. Greetings from Germany to the whole team!

Ok, I have enjoyed your videos for a while now. I happened to get back interested in photography just before the 70d came out, that said... you and a few others sold me on it from the beginning. I watch your channel more than most since well she is beautiful and you both are entertaining BUT most importantly your knowledge and ease of explaining the subject at hand. OK to the ?'s ... oh .. this was another great video! I see the price stepping down over time, not a big concern since at this camera level (its not a pocket) money will be spent but my concern is - should I be waiting for the 70d ii or something so some of the little (why didn't they do this or why didn't they do that) get corrected in the next version since that may only be within a year or so and I am not desperate for a new camera. Thanks in advance for all you 2 do... great stuff

My question is in regards to a warning I received about manual focus and live view - it said that if I used manual focus while in live view, I could ruin the AF system.
