How many times in your life have you set expectations for yourself? Perhaps you believed you would have achieved a number of goals by a certain time. Or maybe you expected that you’d be married by a certain age. Or that your relationship would last a lifetime. While it’s admirable to set goals, and aspire to find love and connection, it’s also dangerous to tie our happiness to our expectations. Because when reality doesn’t meet our expectations, we often find ourselves lost, confused and in pain.
Welcome back to the Tony Robbins Podcast where we are continuing our breakthrough series - taking you to events like Date with Destiny, UPW and Business Mastery, where you’ll have a front row seat to life-changing transformations.
And in this episode, you are going to hear Tony work with Dano. Dano has been with his partner for decades. They’ve built a family and a life together, but they are finding themselves at a crossroad. He’s deeply in love, and struggling to let go, blaming himself for the relationship’s trajectory.
Tony works with Dano to take a new perspective on his relationship, and to learn how to trade his expectations for appreciation. They delve into what it means to be truly masculine in this trying situation and why loving his partner ultimately means letting her go.

Same brother my high school sweetheart relationship was on for 5 years it’s only been 11 days why am I counting ? Because I still love her but I’m the reason I called it off I miss and love her everyday but I felt we kind of grew apart it’s really hard to let go I just want her back I regret everything she told me well never date again because you can expect to leave someone to realize what you’ve lost and then expect to get it back again 😞I thought we could grow together and become stronger but slowly I’m realizing I need to let her go no matter how hard it is because sometimes people have to grow apart in order to be happy or to ever be together again in the future it’ll hurt the day she moves on it I need to accept that fact because it’s my decision and my consequences. how you been holding up ?

I don't comment a lot on youtube, but I've written down what Tony said at the end about what his client could tell her wife. I've been through a really bad relationship and a bad break up and I showed courage and strength with prayers to drive to my ex's home and knock on the door. I've said exactly what Tony said and she step up and we talked about 3 hours and half. Just compassion, understanding and love sharing through our past and discovered she's happily in a relationship already. It sadden me, but also deprived me of my thoughts. I'm truly happy for her that she found someone and everything seems very fine for her and love is shared without second thinking. Whatever the reasons of the relationship, you deserve too to be happy for yourself and even for your ex. Thank you Tony.

Thank you, Tony. There's something about hearing your guidance that has me take a deep breath and makes my shoulders raise, go back and align. It makes me feel like when I was in my early 20s and did not have much responsibility, which made me think that I could take on the world's challenges and make a better place for my love ones and myself. I love that feeling, thank you.

@Marten Dekker - Love is not about attachment or permanence. Love is about spending time with another person, sharing moments, experiences, and each other. The moment we make it about “keeping” another for our own gain, our own need, it becomes about our ego, fears, and insecurities. A mindful, compassionate, kind being only wishes happiness and love for others. Sometimes happiness and love for others is moving on and letting go. - (Alisa Hutton, www.tinybudha.com)

Smothering, ultimately, isn’t about love, but about selfishness. When you love someone, you want what’s best for the person, even if that means the relationship looks different from what you had in mind. In contrast, when you are smothering them, you prioritize your own needs for closeness or connection, as opposed to what the other person wants or needs. - (eHarmony Staff)

That is exactly how I feel...I’ve been taking care of people’s needs for so long. It broke me. I started to break down. I’m trying to feel significant in my own way without being told that I should be grateful for doing the same thing that I was already tired of doing. I feel like a horse with a broken spirit...but nobody seems to understand why even when I do explain my pain.

Wow! This truly helped ME identify why I want/need a divorce. I’ve been married for 6 yrs and 3 years of dating. I’ve shared and experienced life with my husband for 9 years but I felt that I’m the one that always needs to take care of things. I have to take care of my mom, my husband, my dog, my environment in general and I became so exhausted that I spent myself. I put pieces of me into my husband to make him whole, and in that process I lost myself. I didn’t want to admit that I’m important too and that I need to take care of myself because I’ve been too busy taking care of everyone else. I want everything to be amicable, I want no fights, I love him and share a bond with him but I felt spent and now I need time for me. I need to figure myself out, I need to love myself and take care of me now.

Yahaira Y why can’t it be fixed without divorce? I’m trying to understand, my wife left me because she needs to heal herself and take care of herself. I would support her and help her. Why can women only heal if there single?

Jeremy King Well, I think not all women decide for divorce either. Everyone is different and in my case, I chose divorce because I was not happy with him as my HUSBAND, but I will always love him as a friend and as someone that knows me very well, but this is my particular situation. Other couples finish hating each other and I didn’t want that to be the case with him. I feel I want to be on my own for my own sanity, I want to be on my own because I want my peace back and sometimes, you can’t have that with who you are because they’re not ready to be at peace with themselves, and you can’t force that. It has to be their choice and I already waited far too long. This is time for me.
@jeremyking3986
@jeremyking3986 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for replying. I was the one that gave all of myself to make everyone else whole. For 17 years this has been my identity. Now that she wants a divorce, I’m lost as far as boundaries and responsibilities. I can’t wait to get it over with, so I can let go and move on. I’m struggling though, because it wasn’t what I wanted.
@yahairay1573
@yahairay1573 4 жыл бұрын
Jeremy King remember that song that says “you can’t always get what you want, but if you try somehow, you get WHAT YOU NEED” (if it’s not the exact lyric, I apologize!) maybe you could be a bit afraid of being on your own and what to do with yourself? And I don’t mean this in the slightest as a disrespectful comment to you, it’s more of a question I want you to ask yourself. I identify with giving your all to people for however long, and yes! This is part of who you are but it’s also a crutch, IM also a person that much rather take care of someone else than my own self and I have come to the conclusion that it’s a crutch because it’s easier to give your all for someone else because it takes the focus off of our flaws and what WE need to work more to become our best self. Let’s remove those crutches and realize we need to live for us, and if we’re happy and we love ourselves as individuals, it’s easier to open ourselves to a new relationship in which you can be happy on your own without leaving that responsibility to someone else.

I just feel like we made a commitment. Through sickness and health. Richer and poorer. She was sick and I stayed with her. She was out of work and I supported her. I kept my commitment, I honored my word. I am man of integrity. My problem is I expected her to honor her commitment also. I understand it’s my expectations of other people that is causing my issues right now. I’m bitter that she gave up, I think it’s selfish that she quit. But I understand she wants to be happy. I’ll be better off, she was a bad wife anyway.

Leaping out into a world I've hidden away from due to my social anxiety from someone who has a severe mental illness and has been abusive in & out of an acute phase of psychosis for nearly a year. We have 3 children who need me to make that step so they have a chance! I'm ready to GO but scared of what's to come, am I ready, will I be okay, who will I lean on? The psychological abuse and the put-downs are awful. But I know I'm strong. I'm sober from a 15 year opiate habit, I got my life back. Then he broke. Today when my daughter admitted she has been feeling suicidal due to dad's outbursts. I knew we had to go. We're leaving in 5 days. I have NO choice. I'm not in love w/him but do care that he gets help for himself, I hope he finally does so his kids can have their father again but I've done SO much I can't give anymore. They good him that he's not their dad anymore. Most fathers would take that very hard. He doesn't care. Well, I'm not a psychiatrist, I'm a stay-at-home mom, and these children are my top priority. Today was a culmination of everything I nearly put him in jail. I recorded an hour of him verbally abusing me in the worst ways in front of the kids. I have many. I told him we were leaving very soon. I'm going to my mom's house and I'll work from there. (Didn't tell him that) Tbh I should've left 2yrs ago! I feel like I'm the cause of my kid's suffering and yes, in part I guess I am. I'm low-income, and I barely get through the month but by God, we will survive. Everyone has started somewhere, right? This next week will be new, uncertain, depressing, hopeful, painful, and promising all at once! But I must not waiver.... Prayers for everyone dealing with relationship issues. 💕🙏🏻 God will provide.

What I got out of this was the guy was a boy all this time. A real man, knows what he wants and goes after it. It takes action and is clear of what it’s trying to do. They blame the wife for the pain, hey wake up your hurt because of you, not the other way around.

In marriage vows the "for better or for worse, until death do you part" section means for better or for worse until only death do you part. For those of you who are struggling, remember your vows, look yourself in the mirror and go get counseling or a support group that will help heal you and your marriage.

I've been with the father of my kids for the past 9 years. He hasn't bothered to marry me . It is really beginning to bother me . Everyone else and everything else is always a priority but I always come last. It makes me sad because I put all my effort into trying to make it work and make him happy that I feel like maybe I was just wasting my time . I have to learn to let go . Hes obviously not the right person for me . I can't be stubborn and pretend he is just because we have three kids together.

Compassion 21 this was so long ago I forgot what he said plus I may have changed sense I’m always trying to develop. My idea of love is taking really good care of yourself. Then you take really good care of your partner. It sounds simple but I mean it in a very complex way.

The relationship is not easy for let go when you have a child together, But if you don't feel love and keep hate each other that's a pain. I think people should try to give each other A little more time to think what they want. But if you still want to divorce so that's is the time to be able to move on. And let everyone in family happy, because if you still want to be with each other that's just selfish and don't want to lose what you already have, so that's just Benefits of relationship not love,

I have been so blind. I am here to say I love you and I'm sorry. Please forgive me. Thank you. This is not a game. I'm not trying to get you back. You deserve whatever you want. I want to be with you every moment, but if you don't, I love you too much to constrict you. I'm going to respect your wishes. I would love to grow old with you. If you go on, I will always be here for you. I would hate to go be with someone else. If anyone's out there... I need help right now. I need to reframe things to detach from my relationship ending right now. I need a reframe. I need something. I'm in panic phase and can't handle it. Not self harm level, but I just can't...i just can't. I need to just see her for the negative right now. I can't heal through it later, but just right now. I need help from someone to get through the next few days. I'm immobile in my room panicking.

But she felt repelled by the relationship. She wanted independence, she lacked self-esteem which could never have been found within the relationship. He admitted that, apart from love, the rest of the relationship was average (when he ranked categories). It sounds similar to my last relationship. I lacked self-esteem, self-worth, purpose, direction - and worse - (self-)compassion, empathy and understanding. I grew resentful about my ex, myself and life. I needed more validation. I didn't feel ready to get married and raise a family. A lot was missing that no relationship was ever going to fulfil. It's sad. Sorry for rambling, just helps to relate!

@Mike Tiwaz I agree with that 100%, I tried for so long tho, I've already left my abusive family and went into a relationship with someone right away, luckily we didn't get married or anything otherwise it would've been a lot more difficult for me. I am a committed person, but when I don't feel respected it makes me want to turn away and leave
