My first car in 1980 at the age of 17 was a 1965 2 door Ford Falcon Futura with a 289 engine. The car was a honey gold color and had duel exhaust and headers on it. My little Falcon sounded good and was pretty peppy and was a real head turner! I really enjoyed cruising the circuit in my town on Friday and Saturday nights in that car! So much fun!

I used to like watching the Dr. Blake Mysteries because of all the old American models of automobiles in the background or sometimes in the foreground of many scenes. The series was set in the late '50's and early 60's and you could spot many American autos of that era. It was aired on PBS in the US and I was sorry they canceled it after five seasons. By the way, my father staged in Australia with the US 6rh Army, 24th Infantry Division before the New Guinea invasion in WWII.

I helped a friend put a 302 with a C 4 in his 65 falcon futura.the motor came from a totaled torino..it was flipped...we had to do much i hate to bore everyone..when we finished it it was a true runner..a real preformer..talk about Ford fever..

My dad needed a decent economy car to drive to work, about 60 miles round-trip. They were always bought used. Among other vehicles, he had a 1960 Falcon 2-door with "3 on the tree" and a 1963 Futura 2-door with "4 on the floor". That was a fun car and the first one I started trying to drive.

In 1987 I bought a very well cared for 1966 Falcon w/ 40,000 miles from a neighbor, She sold it to me for $400. My wife is not a car person but to this day she tells me that was her favorite car. I remember my dad bought a new 1968 Falcon for $4,000 and 2 year financing, incredable! Thank you for the memories, great episode

My first car was a '63 Falcon Futura convertible. I continued buying parts and pieces from a wrecked '63 Sprint (v-8) and drive train to put into the one I was driving with a 200 ci six and a four-speed... my FIRST CAR , I was 16, and I had to sell it back to the dealer because they couldn't find the title and some rule or law required them to buy it back. If I recall correctly (this was about 1974) I had already arranged to sell the whole project to another guy and I was paid that amount from the dealer and the guy had to buy it from them on some other terms. MAN... I was looking forward to getting that one put together. And, of course I had a batch; you could take them through the woods like a rally car. I could do boot-leg turns on wet pavement without ever really stopping. A few friends were fanatics too. Good fuel economy (right after the 'Arab Oil Embargo' B.S.) easy to work on. Cheap and plentiful. Then I got a '67 GTO and next came habitual traffic offender status that got my drivers license REVOKED for 3+ years... that's a whole 'nuther story.

1964 Falcon Sprint is one good-lookin' car. A friend had one that was a real hoot to ride in, due to the 400 hp 302 with 351 heads, the previous owner built. Green with white side stripe/white interior.

While parking to go get some parts for the 63 Fairlane I was driving. This guy is watching me go in the store I get what I need, he comes up and says: "hey, wanna buy some chrome valve covers for your V8 Fairlane? I have them at home on an old junker in my yard. Sure. Let's go. I come in the yard it's a 64 Falcon Sprint white / red interior 260V8/ auto /no ps bucket seats, console, tach on the dash, woodgrain steering wheel. Nice Chrome, 4 spinner hubcaps. I pop the hood, see the valve covers and chrome air cleaner. How much you want for the whole car? How about $150.00 but it needs to be towed. I was shaking...sure. Best car I ever owned! Purred like a kitten I still miss that car over 45 years later.

My Father ordered a 1963 1/2 Falcon 2 door sedan (NOT the Sprint) with 260 V-8 and 2 speed Fordomatic. Options ordered were heater, defroster, cigarette lighter, front seat belts, no side mirrors (we added later). No power nothing. No radio. Was incredibly reliable. In 1974 I obtained the car to go to college. I overhauled the 260 at 64,000 miles (my Dad was bad about oil changes) and added a 4 barrel carb and tube headers-really woke up the 260, but still had the 2 speed auto. Then I obtained a 289 and 4 speed from a crashed '65 Mustang and all that I needed to do was change the tail housing of the transmission for the shorter shifter mounting. I made the engine wild with 11:1 compression, mechanical cam. It idled at 1,000 and couldn't be driven below 2,000, but was fun to have a 7,800rpm engine. Got tired of driving that, then obtained a .030 over 302 and '69 351 Windsor heads ported by PAW (Performance Automotive Warehouse [closed]) with high performance RV cam. Great engine-still have it to this day. When metallic brake linings were no longer available for the drum brakes, I installed disc brakes in front (non powered-lots of leg).

Back in the 1980's I had a '65 Falcon wagon work car, my friends & I called it "The Falc". When I was a kid in the 1960's my next door neighbor had a 1963 Falcon Sprint with the 260 V8, Tach, wire hub caps, dual exhaust etc. It was a super cool car, white with red interior, my Dad & I would go over & crank it up once in awhile while they were away on vacation.

My dad bought a brand new 1965 Falcon Futura 2-door sedan in Wimbledon White. Powertrain was the 170 cid 6 cylinder and 3 on the tree manual. It was quite peppy, but my mom had got used to driving automatics and hated the Falcon. So less than 2 years later, dad bought a new 1967 Fairlane 2-door hardtop with automatic transmission. That Fairlane in Clearwater Aqua was a pretty car, and eventually became MY first car!

Growing up we had a 1962 sprint falcon, 1964 289 falcon wagon, and a 1968 falcon coupe. Those were great cars growing up. Especially the 1968 was the first car I learned how to drive in. Lol, that’s the one I snuck out in when nobody was home!😊

I am a huge fan of the Falcon, they provided me with cheap and reliable transportation for many years. I bought a couple of them for about 50 bucks each and was even given a '62 Ranchero; I put a 200 inch six and a four speed in it and it's still my all-time favorite vehicle, beat a 327 Chevy across an intersection with it.

I owned a 1964 sprint. 289 auto. But it was from factory a 4 speed. At 7:11 theres a side emblem for that car that I needed. I never was able to find them anywhere. When i sold the car it was still without them emblems. Never to this day have i saw one . They most be extremely rare.

A lot of used parts dealer have now moved over to Falcons and Torinos as the Mustang parts are everywhere and relatively inexpensive. They wouldn't be cheap but i would dollars to doughnuts one could be had a Ford Nationals in Carlisle this summer.

I bought a 1960 Falcon 2 door sedan when I was dating my future wife. It already had about 100k miles on it. Over the next eight years, we put another 150k miles on it, routinely getting 30 MPG on the highway. We made some long trips with it, and it never let us down.

My dad had an Australian 1963 Ford Falcon 4 door Futura with the 170 cubic inch 'Pursuit' six, three speed column shift manual, made several trips in the 1970's halfway across Australia in it, three and a half day road trip, gorgeous chrome and red interior, a padded dash which was rare in the early 1960's, laminated windshield with the tinted band at top, ultra reliable, super comfortable, that deeply dished white steering wheel with five turns lock to lock , drive with one finger on the wheel on mile after mile of straight highway to the horizon.

There was a prototype for a 1961 Frontenac, but Ford of Canada decided to import the (Mercury) Comet instead. (I have a picture of it, but it won't copy to the comments)

This was one of the cars my mom and dad had when I was a kid. It was all white. My dad also had a falcon pick up. He use that for a work truck. He was a carpenter. It was a perfect car for his, he even made a camper shell on the back of it, these were great cars👍👍❤️😎

I still love the looks of the ‘63 Falcon Sprint in either 2-door hardtop or convertible style. I’d love to find one of those with the 260 V8 and 4 speed manual. Had a buddy with the hardtop which he bought around 1976 and kept it a few years right after college. (Of course, he traded it for a much newer car once he got more money!)

My 63 1/2 Sprint has a 302, C-4, Mustang II suspension that includes power disc brakes and power steering, all installed by a previous owner. It's Rangoon Red.

My grandma had a 1967 Ford Futura, sports coupe, 289. The little car could scoot right along. Her trade in? Four door, 1948 Plymouth, straight flathead 8. Weighed ABOUT 8 tons(kidding). It was massive and had about 2 inches clearance in her garage. My grandfather was a mechanic all his life. He served in WWI, France, was gassed and his jaw rotted out before he passed in 1969. Their garage had a pit so he could work under cars. We lived next door 1955-1969. My older brothers always had cars and because of their budgets the cars always needed work. Good thing there was a mechanic next door. Lots of free advice....

In all my research I can NOT find anything to state that Plymouth EVER put a straight 8 engine in any vehicle. Not only that, but there would not even be room under the hood of a Plymouth for a straight 8 engine. The DeSoto/Chrysler straight 6 would not even fit in a Plymouth or Dodge body without moving the radiator forward because they were two inches longer than the Plymouth/Dodge straight 6's. Your grandmother's Plymouth could only have been equipped with a straight 6. You are welcome to research the subject, but I think you will find that I am correct. We all have certain memories of our childhood which turn out to not be correct.

In the early 1990's I had a 1962 2-door Falcon I restored for a girl named Danielle but she moved to Nevada and gave it to me, so this was my daily driver for 10 years. I put a 289 in it, with a 3 speed syncro low trans what really made it go. Th e 6 to V8 is an easy engine swap with Mustang parts, should you ever want to do it. The 6 cyl rear end will hold up, if you don't drag race with it

Great video! The 65 actually had a pretty significant change from the 64, that being the partial frame in the front being redesigned, which improved handling. The ranchero also remained on the Falcon platform in 66 before transitioning to the fairlane. I’m 19 and my first car is a 1965 Ford Falcon Futura sedan. It takes me 200 miles between home and college and my ranch. Still wonderful cars!

My first car was a1967 falcon 2 door. It came with a 289 v8 and power front disk brakes. This was bought used from an elderly man . He failed to tell us that it had a burned exhaust valve that needed to be replaced. I had a neighbor that was a mechanic and he and i repaired the engine. After that i became a mechanic and just retired after 42 years . That car was my interdiction in the auto mechanic world.

Thanks so much for this comprehensive retrospective on the Falcon. My very first car was a 1963 Falcon Wagon. A 4-door (or more precisely, a 5 -door) model, that carried the 170 cu. in. inline 6 cyl, automatic transmission, and featured a power rear window in the tailgate! I drove this for a couple years and, in hindsight, didn't give this car the 'love' it deserved. It was good on gas, and didn't have too many issues, despite my lack of maintenance applied to it. Would love to have that car today...

I noted the drop in Falcon sales from the 400 thousands to the 300 thousands in 1962. I’m guessing this is because Ford introduced the mid-size Fairlane that year, which likely enticed some buyers away from the Falcon.

I owned a 61-144cid , a 62-170 CID , a 63 wagon 170 CID and a 64 wagon, and then , the hotrod wagon of 66 -with the 200 6cyl. Then later I bought a comet with the 302 , and man would that eat the road. Later I had a 72 cougar with the 302, nice car. Now I have an 89 F-250 with the 302. Had lots of fun in all the cars too !

I learned to drive in the 63 1/2 Sprint Convertible, just like the one in the ad. White with a red interior, and a four speed. Something that is forgoten, is that the Sprint had a single glasspack muffler coming out the back with a chrome tip. And yes it had a growl.

My high school used a '70 royal blue Falcon when I took driving training. Ergo, the first car I legally drove on a highway. Respectable tame little sedan, some giddyup, no particular vices. Would kinda like to have it now, from before the choking smog gear under the hood.

After that, I guess Australia took over Falcon manufacturing. Until 2016. Really sad. Australia built some amazing cars. Not really recognised world wide. What a shame, even GM and the demise of Holden and the Chevy SS. Australia built some great cars. Ford built the Territory, it could have been an international SUV. The Commodore could have been GM’s BMW or Mercedes. But, I guess protection and unions fought against Australia building a better car. I think both GM and Ford really messed up, ignoring Australia’s contribution to car manufacturing. We made good cars. Now it’s all gone. What a complete shame. I watch you tube videos about how much Americans now love the Chevy SS, they never got the opportunity to see the Ford Territory or the last of the Ford Falcons. They are amazing cars. History now. I love driving my XR6 Falcon, and Commodore SV6. So smooth and comfortable. I really wish the most that Holden would come back. It is Australia. Thank you.

I’ve only owned one Chevy in my life. And all of the rest of the cars I own have all Ben Fords best car ever built. I had a 66 Ford Mustang when I was 18 years old had a six cylinder three speed with a white vinyl roof and that was one cool car. Sure wish I had it now.👍👍❤️😎

A fine video! Studebaker led the way with the Lark - but later, the Ford Falcon and the Chevy II made life difficult for Studebaker salesmen. My dad talked my Grandmother into a '64 Falcon sedan which was as well built as anything else available at the time.

Hi Tony, nice video, nice car. The Falcon Futura and the Falcon Sprint V8 where both Lee Iacocca's after bickering with Henry Ford II. Henry Ford II did NOT think the customers would buy an economy car with a deluxe trim package. Lee Iacocca's argument was that the Chevrolet Corvair with the Monza (deluxe) trim package was out selling the standard Corvair, and it was at that. The Falcon Sprint V8 was targeted to the Corvair Spyder/Corsa. Most Falcon Sprint V8's are 260 cubic inch engines. You could indeed order a 289 cubic inch engine over the 260, but they are VERY rare until 1965. By the way, the 1966-1969 Falcon body style had been on the drawing board before the Mustang came out because it was an early proposal for the Mustang. Please reply. Dave...

Will the falcon continued on over in australia. Correct me if I'm wrong. Oh I've always had a soft spot for the falcon. But when they based it on the Torino it just wasn't the same thing. But I love that Torino body style of 1970

The Australian Falcons ran from 1960 to 2016 which ended Ford production in Australia

1970 may have been the end of the line for the Falcon in the USA, but it was produced in Australia until 2016! It evolved into all wheel independent suspension, rack and pinion steering six speed auto with a DOHC 24 Valve inline 6 producing over 180kw, but still with the bore spacing from that first 6 cylinder engine produced back in the 1960s. My 2004 model is turning 20 this year!

Very early memories of a green Falcon Mom drove me around in. We went to Jefferson Oregon for some reason and drank orange juice. The Ford was visually gray but I was only 3 and maybe colors hadn't registered yet.

P.s. it was apricot nectar and I thought we were going to see the Jeffersons from TV, hang out w the "dynamite!" guy. Mom would make the Falcon go up in pitch then kick the floor and move a thing by the steering wheel, I know understand that to be a "3 on the tree".

My Dad had a car lot for 35 yrs starting in 1960. During that time I probably saw every model car the US had. I want to say starting in the 70's they would develop blow by rather quickly.To this day I can close my eyes and tell you if an old Ford passed by just by that sweet burnt oil smell.

I didn't know how steeply the sales tailed off after 1961...quite stark. (Competition was stiff, and Mustang would have cannibalised much of Falcon's market.) Not so in Argentina and Australia, where the local Falcons were sold as "premium" models constituting the bulk of Ford's business in those markets.

The Falcon continued to do well in many parts of the world long after it was no longer available in U.S. I would think the lack of the Mustang elsewhere allowed it to continue. The biggest reason it was stopped here in the states was new safety regulation. Those laws were adopted and placed into the Maverick.

Here in the USA, Falcon sales were cannibalized by the new mid-size Fairlane in 1962, and the new sporty Mustang in 1964. By 1966, when the Falcon came out with the “Coke bottle” profile, they had dropped 2-door hardtops and convertibles, so you had to buy a Fairlane or Mustang if you wanted one of those. My first car was a 1967 Fairlane 2-door hardtop which still ranks as one of the the top 3 best looking cars I’ve ever owned.

I have never forgiven myself, as a freshly minted high school graduate, fifty years in the past. for parting with my 1964 Ford Falcon Convertible (stupidly for a mere $800). Even though it was replaced with a lovely (Motor Trend Magazine Car of the Year) 1968 Chevrolet Impala, I still, to this day, regret not finding some way, by hook or crook, to keep it. (The manifest difficulties of an eighteen year old's finances.) My fondest memory of that glorious chariot, was giving my Tuba playing, good friend, classmate and fellow marching band member, a ride back to the high school following our Senior Homecoming parade, Royalty Coronation and football game, with the top down, friend in the back seat, Tuba carried in marching fashion for all the world to see. I love you Fred, and your Tuba, wherever you are.

@@TonysFordsandMustangs Just remembered that Dad got a hold of a 1961 or 1962 Ford Econoline van (Falcon drive train) that he/we outfitted as a camper that slept four, replete with running water and a Coleman stove. I recall many miles sitting on that warm engine cover between the two front seats, with the best view of the road in the whole wide world.

I had a 64 Futura 5 passenger sports convertible. The 170 six with 2 speed automatic was slow, but it would comfortably cruise all day at 70 mph. Had I kept it, I would have updated to a 200 six and three speed auto.

Australia and Argentina were a different story. In Australia, we had the first gen until ‘67. Then various generations that became organic to Australia that lasted until the mid-2010s. In Argentina, the first gen was still going to about 1980! (With a few updated front and rear trims.

The early Australian Falcons had to have re-enforced front coil towers after the original American spec 62 XL model was found to punch coils through the top of the tower on rural roads. Also the Australian models were right hand drive.

It’s interesting how our Australian built Ford Falcons differed to the US models from our first XK model in 1960 which was very close to the first US model as in apart from superficial embellishments our station wagons were shorter with less rear overhang as to avoid getting hung up on spoon drains and our Utes were totally different in roofline and doors than the US Ranchero’s, we had the same six cylinder engines and a more serious problem arose in the cars front suspension namely the ball joints that failed dramatically leading to front end collapses ( I was in my fathers Falcon wagon when this happened in the mid 1960’s) as this was due to Australia’s rougher roads than the US and led to a recall to replace the Falcons ball joints and initially Ford US head office didn’t believe it so our Ford Australia engineers came up with an economical fix in house and that involved replacing the ball joints with the stronger ball joints from the similar Australian “Compact Fairlane” which cured the problem then things changed dramatically after the next XL model with the thunderbird inspired pillar when Ford Australia went it alone with our 1964 XM then 1965 XP models which was different to the US models as Ford USA wanted Australia to manufacture the US models with the changed body pressings but Australia decided to spend all the money on a more robust car suited to Australian conditions hence is why our Falcons looked very different to the US models, many more changes to models in future years evolved to when we fully went it alone from the XA series in 1973 which included the Mad Max style 2 door hard tops etc
