Hi Tony! Loved the video on the 1999-2003 Ford Mustang! I was a victim of the low hp output in the Mustang Cobra. I retired from the police department in January 2000. As a retirement gift to myself, I bought a new 1999 Ford Mustang Cobra. I waited for the '99 model to come out bcos it had the new Independent rear suspension IRS, the hp rating was 320 hp vs 305 hp on the '98 Cobra, and I loved the new design of the '99 as well. I test drove a '99 Mustang GT about 3 months prior to buying my Cobra since my dealer was having difficulty getting the new '99 Cobra in stock. So when they finally received 2 of them, a green convertible, and a white with black leather interior, I of course picked the white! I had a set of '99 GT chrome 17" wheels installed as a trade for the stock aluminium SVT wheels. It looked absolutely SICK!! AWESOME!! Now the day I took delivery of my new Cobra, I noticed immediately as I entered the freeway from the dealership that the GT I test drove 3 months earlier seemed much more powerful, especially down low from a start. I just figured it was the nature of the new SVT engine possibly needed break in time? But after about 2 weeks of the power being down in my opinion, I took my new Cobra to the dealership service department and complained about what I thought was a lack of power thar had been advertised? I explained that the GT with 260 hp felt as strong if not stronger than my 320 hp SVT engine? Of course the dealership said it was all in my mind, and in fact if anything, the engine probably makes 330 to 340 hp?? I don't think so! Hahaha 😁 So I left unhappy with the outcome that day. Then I was reading I believe Road & Track and they had written an article regarding the '99 Cobra and many customer complaints just like mine. The article said that power was proven to be only about 270 hp to 285 hp at best! No wonder the GT seemed as fast or faster than my new high performance SVT Cobra that I had just paid around $18,000 cash 3 months prior. So I called Ford Motor customer service and made a formal complaint. They told me that my Cobra was now under a recall to upgrade the engine to increase the hp to the advertised 320 hp! Two weeks later I got a call from my dealership service department saying I needed to bring my Cobra in for repairs. I asked what the repairs consisted of? They said, we will replace some engine electronics, install a new high flow cat back exhaust, install a new under pulley system, install a new intake plenum and install larger fuel injectors? So they had my Cobra in the dealership service department for 10 days doing all the upgrade installations. Finally after picking up my Cobra, it was noticeably more powerful, but it was also much louder from the exhaust upgrade, and it started having fuel pump issues? It was in for service numerous times after they did the upgrades. I often wondered if they really did all the upgrades they said they would do? The car seemed to run somewhat rougher than before the upgrades? I loved my Cobra, but that entire situation left a bad taste in my mouth for the retirement gift I wanted so badly for myself! Oh well. I kept the Cobra for about 2 years, until it started overheating a lot! Eventually it was discovered a head gasket was leaking! I fought with Ford Motor to buy back my Cobra, and I'd buy a new GT instead. After about a month of going back and forth with Ford Corporation, they finally made me an offer on my Cobra. They bought it back from me for $15,500 and gave me a $5,000 discount on any new 2004 or 2005 Mustang GT. I chose a new 2005 GT and that was an awesome car! I not once had anything go bad on that car, other than a battery, an alternator and a least power steering pump. I out 150,000 miles on that GT and than gave it to my son when he turned 18. Hahaha 😁 Great memories and the dreadful low hp output Cobra saga. Thanks Tony for the great videos and for the great memories 😀

Thank you for your story. The 99's were an issue out of the gate so much so that Ford didn't build a 2000 model. They needed to correct a lot of issues much as you described. I'm glad you enjoyed the video.

My first Mustang was a 2004 GT 40th anniversary edition. Fun car and great memories, especially from cars and coffee. My oldest son was only 3 and a half when I sold it and still remembers it. Had headers, x pipe, pulley, Flowmaster and intake spacer. New I needed more power though when I got spanked by an 04 mach 1 on the highway, lol.

Tony, I know you didn't cover much on the V6. In 2003 and 2004 Ford put out a V6 Pony Package Mustang. They are the one's you see with the fake GT scoop hoods, and the running horses on the bottom of the doors. They had options on them that the Base V6 did not have.

A lady friend had one of these with a V6/auto back in the day, she let me take it home so I could change the oil. I knew the thing was a dog, but getting smoked by a Honda Odyssey is just beyond embarrassing 😂 No wonder you only spoke all of two sentences about the V6 cars. I also got a drive a buddy’s Terminator Cobra back in 2003 when I was in the service, and that thing was the polar opposite of that V6 turd. The blower on those sounds wicked.

My project car is a 2003 Ford mustang base, got it a few years ago with 151k miles with a misfire for 1k, cats got stolen but I got a 96 mustang's cats on them with rims from I believe a 03 svt model that were on that 96, Im a 2nd year in college and have it as my project, I'm repainting both sides of the car in its original oxford white and will likely be painting the roof black. I want to swap the engine and transmission to either a 4.6L to learn more about engines then later a 5.0L for all out drifting. I got hooked to ford and mustangs as a whole due to my grandpa's 1969 Ford Mustang Mach 1 (pfp). I got to drive his Mach 1 last Memorial Weeked and told him I want to finish restoring it for him. I hope to begin painting this next week and polish it the week after. Next semester is when I will likely be painting the roof.

I had a 2001 GT Vert as my first mustang. I didn’t realize how close the DNA was to the Fox body. As I recall the marketing at the time was “all new”. I bought it new and traded it for a sedan when I got married and bought a house. My daily driver needed to be replaced and could not swing it financially. Got back into a stang years later with my 2019 GT vert. Which is so much better of a car with heated and cooled seats plus 200 more HP.

I like the New Edge and SN95 Mustangs. I’m considering a ‘98 Cobra, a ‘99 GT convertible, or possibly a ‘07 GT (SN97?). All have under 100k miles, prices vary around $5k between the 3 models I’m looking at. What would you recommend?
@TonysFordsandMustangs20 күн бұрын
All of those sound like a wise choice. The Cobra should have the highest collector value going forward. That stated the condition of the cars would be the determining factor for me. The one that has been taken care of by it's previous owners would be the one I would choose. Best of luck and thanks for watching.

@TonysFordsandMustangs4 күн бұрын
It's impossible to say without seeing it. A V6 typically won't bring as much as a GT and are not really considered collector cars at this point in time. That stated, striaght 6 cylinder 1st generation Mustangs used to be considered as drivers only. The prices for those have more than doubled in the last few years and it's difficult to find a nice one now under 15K and really nice ones are well over 25K.
