I bought the Craftsman Professional full chrome polished set that are made in the USA and they have held up great. Also both a standard and Metric set of Mac long pattern wrenchs. Love the v cut for the open end. My ratcheting wrenchs are Blackhawk is an off brand of Mac that are reversible.

hey great post and timing tony. I just used three wrenches tightin a belt on a small stump grinder. one was an old but reliable s-k another was a new long Craftsman the last was a gearwrench ratchet wrench all three were 9/16 size you know what all three worked great and did just what I needed

I remembered buying those flex head gearwrench sets about 10 or so years ago, they were around $100 each, and that was a sale. The older gearwrenches are actually made better. I have compared the old to the new and the ratcheting mechanism is much better on the older plus the open ends are smaller but stronger. They say flex gearwrench instead of just gearwrench.
@TonyTheTechnician5 жыл бұрын
Ya I know exactly what you mean. They used to be built much better. Not that I have an issue with these but they aren't as nice as the older ones

I have a set of double box zero offset non ratcheting long throw 12 point metric wrenches from Snap-On I really use them for drain pans and brake calipers I love these wrenches they're amazing and I'm buying a metric set of 6 pointed Snap-On metric wrenches yeah it's a pricy set but I prefer 6 points to 12 I hate rounding off bolts and have to hammer a socket to the head

Lots of good info here! I have the Dewalt long combination wrenches as well as the ratcheting wrenches. They can be be found for typically around $30-40 a set. They have an open end design like the MAC knuckle saver and precision torque wrenches as well as the modified box end to lessen the chance of rounding fasteners. Plus they are made in Taiwan so as you know the quality tends to be better than most of the China made tools. I really think dollar for dollar Dewalt and Tekton are two of the better brands out there.
@TonyTheTechnician7 жыл бұрын
King1320 ya I agree with you. Thank you. I also have the dewalt reversible ratcheting wrenches and I think they are amazing!! Thank you for watching and commenting!

@@TonyTheTechnician does dewalt have full sets of the reversible ratcheting wrenches?
@bryanlawless18586 жыл бұрын
Does the gearwrench have a screw instead of a pin. I saw some double flex from cornwell that had pins. I'd like to know I could tighten them up when they get loose. If your hogging on them daily the'll get loose eventually. I would like to think gearwrench(ratcheting wrenches) are at the same level of quality as the big tool truck brands. What are your thoughts on just the ratcheting wrenches?

Honestly at this point with all these wrenches it seems like it would be a pain just having all these different kinds of wrenches simply because you have too many options. You’d either have to go get a different wrench for every situation or just deal with a regular offset box end open end which would make buying the other ones pointless. Might as well just own basic wrenches and maybe a few ratcheting and then even further maybe offset depending on your line of work.
@TonyTheTechnician6 жыл бұрын
Richard Olsen ya the Tekton angle wrenches got sold. They are more for people who deal with hydraulics on a daily basis.
@richardolsen64766 жыл бұрын
TonyTheTechnician yeah I’m an industrial lift truck mechanic and haven’t invested in an angle set yet but the day will be coming soon. I’ve had to borrow some angles a few times otherwise I would have had to go through some hoops so they would definitely see some use for me.

You better be very careful where in the engine compartment you use a non-reversible ratcheting wrench. I had a Craftsman non-reversible wrench that I got stuck because the bolt turn out to be a hell of a lot longer than what I thought. I had to destroy it to get it off. Surprisingly Sears hornored the warranty. After that I put the whole damn wrench set in my toolbox and I have never used them since.
@TonyTheTechnician7 жыл бұрын
Samuel Bowers lol ya that can happen sometimes. But I don't use my matco a whole lot bc I have an issue with the ratcheting mechanism pretty often so I got some other ones

I love my Carlyle. But if i was looking to buy a wrench set now....i think i would go with the channel lock ones with the v groove. It does skip a size but they have so many single sizes that you can Get a truly complete set for under the price of the Carlyle set. I have some gear wrench and craftsman usa reversible ratcheting wrenches but i never use them. Just remember there will be times you need 2 of the same size wrench! So a cheaper set is nice to have. I have wayyy to many. Like 3 sets of craftsman usa including double open end. Snap on standard, Carlyle metric, gear wrench non ratcheting metric. And some Pittsburgh bigger wrenches etc. It just sucks that i put all my craftsman usa sockets and wrenches because they are like collectors now. And replaced them with pretty much all Taiwan tools.... crescent, gear wrench sockets etc. Make sure you don't cheap out to much on wrenches! Right now channel lock v groove are the best bang for your buck! Around $30 a set. Add another $20 to grab the missing sizes or just the bigger sizes you need and you won't regret it.
@TonyTheTechnician7 жыл бұрын
koskey06 ya those channel lock wrenches are great. I’ve used the Carlyle and loved them. And the channel lock is the same thing but much cheaper. They are a great way to go

Wera joker wrenches have a very innovative design and german performance, but, at a price....oh, and by the way,Tony, it seems your focus is on “shiny-pretty” rather than performance, just sayin........
@TonyTheTechnician6 жыл бұрын
Scott Carlon I have seen the joker wrenches and wanted a set for awhile but your right they come at a cost and I already have a lot of wrenches so I can’t justify getting them right now. It’s not that I go off of shiny. Obviously performance is the key but I’m not going to show tightening a fastener until it eventually fails you know what I mean lol. But the imperfections and chrome is still a very important part to cover as it is what protects the tool from exposure to the environment plus yes I do think if I’m going to be paying hundreds for my tools they better look good lol.
