I have so many wrenches because I want them😉 I used 4 different 11mm wrenches plus 2 sockets and 3 ratchets just to remove 12 nuts off the Exhaust of a 72 Beetle. You can never have too many tools. And my double box end extra long Gearwrench wrenches came in soooo handy today.

Everytime I buy a wrench set my old lady ask me” don’t you have those already” 😂 like no they’re different. Gearwrench just came out with their indexing wrenches and those things are great!!!!. But also I think people are starting to go towards 6 point now instead of 12 due to more surface contact on fasteners. Loved the vid bro👍

Certain wrenches have different functionality. I love the wera jokers . The sad part is sometimes it’s that one feature that makes the sale. I can tell you I am glad I have as many tools as I do. I have recently used tools I bought for a specific purpose and without them it would have been impossible to do the job, and some would have taken longer and possibly damage things. They are my get out of a jam card. Thanks for sharing your experience.

I'm a pretty new DIY mechanic (just our cars here at home). Could you provide an example of when a combination wrench would be a better tool where a socket / ratchet would also work? I gravitate towards using my ratchet for almost everything. Is there a situation where you would want to use the box end as opposed to the open end? (Sorry for the rookie questions).
@TonyTheTechnician
@TonyTheTechnician 5 жыл бұрын
Well many situations you could use both a ratchet or a combo wrench but as far as open end vs close end. The open end may be the only way to get on to some fasteners depending on where they are located and most times you don't want to break loose a tight fastener with the open end you want to use a box end bc it covers more surface of the fastener and is less likely to round it off
@ericp7496
@ericp7496 5 жыл бұрын
On the comparison of wrench vs. socket/ratchet, in some situations you won't have enough clearance for a socket and ratchet. In that situation only a wrench will do. Tony provided excellent examples on which wrench is best for certain situations. Consider how your tools will be used and choose accordingly.

Been wrenching for some 30 yrs. This is how I look at it when it come the Wich tool to use. Use the fastest tool for the job. For example Why use a box end when you can fit a ratchet wrench, why use a ratchet wrench when you can fit a ratchet with sockets, why use a ratchet when you can use air/ cordless ratchet, why use powered ratchet when you can use air/ cordless impacts. That is why there are so many options. But sometimes you just have to use what is at hand even if it not the fastest option available but it's what you have under the truck or at that location

If you decide to buy combo wrenches, 6 point are better buys. They truly don’t round off fasteners in comparison to 12 point or the spline drive.
@athhud
@athhud 5 жыл бұрын
12pt are useless unless you have 12pt fasteners. With the arrival of ratcheting wrenches, the use of 12pt all but vanished. The only time I reach for 12pt anymore is in extremely tight spots where I can’t fort the head of a ratcheting wrench and don’t have the room to swing a 6pt. One thing I’ve never understood is why everyone isn’t making 6pt ratcheting wrenches??? What the hell is the point of a 12pt wrench that has far more than 12 available positions?

A good mechanic DO NOT NEED these bunch of tools. When i start to work an old mechanic told me than most mechanic try to compensate his lack of skill and knowledge with TOOLS. They NEED A LOT OF TOOLS. They need a lot of diagnostic machines. I work 25 years with a set of combination wrench , 3/8 ratchet regular and long and socket set and 1/2 ratchet regular and long and socket set, one braker bar and a pry bar. One plier and one cutter. For electronic/ electrical staff. An analog multimeter , one digital probe, one old second hand fluke oscilloscope and one scanner. Nobody need flex ratchets or extra long ratchets plus flex head...…………………….ratchet wrench………...bend flex head ratchet……….off set wrench……………………....YOU NEED SKILLS.

There's a difference between finishing the job and finishing it quickly, especially if you're doing flatrate. The more work you can get done the more you'll get paid. And then you have allot of newer, mostly European cars, that require manufacturer specific tools. Finally you have those of us that are just plain tool geeks lol

That is true many jobs can be done with less tools and using the basic tools but there are also alot of specialty jobs now on cars that you need special tools. Also when you have these other tools you can actually get alot of jobs done faster bc they fit certain areas better then using basic tools. So yes you can do many jobs with your standard tools you are correct but when your trying to make money and do jobs faster having more universal tools allows yours skills to show by getting the job done faster and still doing it correctly by using these tools.
@TonyTheTechnician
@TonyTheTechnician 5 жыл бұрын
@@diltzm completely agree. These tools can help get jobs done much faster then using basic tools. Even though it can be done with the basic stuff for some jobs the specialty tools really help reduce time. Thank you for your comment
