I would say use a vitamin c in a pump. The more you take out the top of a dropper bottle or lid it allows air to get in the bottle. And we all know how unstable c is. I'm trying Isdin sunscreen. They won a Nobel Prize for their formula with plankton. They say it can reverse the signs of photo aging.

I like that you say to use a routine that works for you. I’ve gotten compliments for years on my skin, and I use a cleanser every 2-3 days, rinse morning and night with a wash cloth, and use a sunscreen moisturizer every morning. When I tried adding products to get ready for my wedding, I saw a massive decline in how my skin looked. Allergies, dryness, oiliness, etc. I will likely use a vitamin C serum at some point, but I’m ok to stay away from retinols and embrace my wrinkles. But again, that works for me, it may not work for everyone else!

I was totally on board with buying his 4 step system... until I saw the price. I so wish I could afford that, but sadly that is way out of my budget. What I love about Dr. Youn is that he always gives us alternatives so that even people on a budget can benefit from his advice. Maybe one day I'll be able to give it a try.

honestly, just get to know your skin type (dry, oily, sensitive) use a good facial sunscreen and you'll be doing more than enough to be thankful 40 years later. my mom has good skin because she started using (probably very cheap because she was super poor) anti-aging creams and facial sunscreen in her early 20s, while her younger brothers - who live in a very hot and sunny place and never used anything bc theyre male and dont care - all have dry as hell skin and legit look at least 20 years older than her despite being way younger. while the creams she used didnt prevent her from gettting wrinkles, she doesnt have saggy smile lines or wrinkly eyebags while her brothers do, nor those visible spot-like freckles you get with aging. and although obsession with looking younger is becoming terrifying these days, i think this type of preventive skin care is more about taking care of the future you. these days, with our technology, it takes very little effort to not have to age like an old peasant from the medieval times.

If you are an absolute beginner, just start using sunscreen everyday, a good facewash or cleanser and moisturise especially at night. Once you get this routine right, you can modify your skincare as per your budget anytime. Cerave is good brand to begin with.

I totally agree with the fact that applying less really works. I discovered it when I skipped doing my night routine/day routine sometimes and just applied a cica gel and after 9-10 hours I felt my skin feel good. I realized that sometimes missing out on the routine is actually the much-needed window your skin needs to work for you.

Another important thing to note is that results take time. You’re not going to see much results from any skincare product in less than thirty days. Most products will take much longer to see anything drastic.

I've been using Differin gel for years now because I used to have bad acne, it helped a lot. I still use it almost every night. I heard that it is a good retinoid for anti aging though I don't think I'm there yet. I have noticed though that my forehead, which is where I apply it, has no indication of creases or wrinkles while I can see some forming on my eyes.

Plz don't apply near the eyes, though. We lack sebaceous glands in the eye area & the dermis is far thinner/more fragile. I've noticed Dif gel MUST help forehead & smile lines bc ppl seem to not have usual "11" brow lines+ smoother [non] smile lines of most 10yrs younger than them. I'd ask derm for safe eye care that won't counteract where Diff gel meets eye cream/serum.

I use Dermalogica skincare because my dad is the head of R&D so we get $100 worth of products every month, and it works well for my acne-prone and sensitive skin unlike most American brands that I've tried. The only caveat is the price, which I don't have to worry about right now but once my dad retires, I'm going to have to find a more affordable alternative.

I firmly believe you only need Vit A & B in the PM followed by your moisturiser & Vit C in the AM followed by your SPF & exfoliate once a week with an AHA / Amino Acid complex as you have the added benefit of BHA. This works wonders for my skin & I really don't feel the need to incorporate other actives. Simple & effective

i feel like all my years of avoiding being outside has helped😂. i drink lots of water, more than any other beverage. i think listening to your own body is helpful. i personally am vegan so i don’t have any dairy and my skin has gotten even better over the years from never eating dairy or meats. also: sunscreen and water. don’t underestimate sleep as well. granted i don’t always get the best sleep but i really try because there’s nothing better than waking up feeling truly rested 😊 less is more in skincare, 10 steps isn’t necessarily best. use less and add more only if you feel you need it

(Also used on face without issues) Sunscreen: -Avene mineral -ISDIN mineral -Baby mineral sunscreens Obagi wrecked my skin, even just the cleanser. Skinmedica products worked well, but the price was too hefty.

I am so agree with Dr. Youn that some skin conditions might not be ok with actives ingredients. I'm 38 y old, no wrinkles barely crows feet, never use any peeling/active exfoliator that actually peeling the skin ( I only use toner with cotton pad, peeling gel (love it coz, cause nothing on my skin) or sensitive friendly SA face lotion once in the blue moon if I want to smoothen up the skin) but I don't using it every single day, just occasionally. I have super sensitive skin and I'm so happy dr. Youn mentions about thin skin. My skin has already been like this since I was young, back home, my fam will call me rotten tomatoes sometimes, whenever I just came back from outside at noon time, some south east asia are no kidding hot, and my parents house just 15-20 mnt walk to the beach/ sea side. My skincare steps are so simple Cleanse Tone Serum Moisturize Day time, I sometimes do not apply serum and just add sunscreen. I normally just get moisturizer with SPF because I'm mainly indoor. My moisturizer is actually vit C essence, but the consistency are way thicker and than my serum so I put it as the last step before sunscreen if I use one. for weird reason majority lotion and cream form doesn't work for my skin, it's been 4 years I'm using Japanese brand and few Korean that I already fell great with it, it's also help my rosacea flare up last time (it was second worst skin prob experience, small mistake and I triggered the allergic my eyes and nose are weird, my eyes completely looks like the blue avatar coz it's swollen and felt like pulling with cartoon witch nose). I stopped using face powder since 2009 and no make before especially now, didn't use one for my wedding too. But what I think really help my skin is on and off no sugar (can't stopped it like forever because once a while would love to have cake or other sweets) and low carbs diet (I didn't mean no carbs at all, just low to moderate carbs (I only did Keto once) and I do IF unintentionally because I'm too busy in the morning that I only can start drinking my matcha/ coffee around 11.a.m ish sometimes around 1-2 p.m And since late 20's (around 28 y old to be exact), I had hormon issues due to my weight I believed, I didn't get my period for 5 months and I started had crazy huge painful pimples (thank God it's all gone within 3-4 months ans nobody noticed that I ever had those big like marble with yellow fuss pimples) due to this condition I clean my diet took supplements less than a week I got my periodsand it's been all good since that time. I did smoothie fast for a week before cleaning up my diet and started taking supplements such as glutathione, collagen, vit C and e or pre mix. Now I consume more stuff including ceramide, hyaluronic acid, hydrolyzed collagen both from cows and marine, turmeric, NAC, ashwaganda, magnesium, hatomugi, Bulgarian rose oil supplement and probiotics, also I did consume evening primerose oil capsules before. I know it's bit much so I devided into 2 sometimes 3 in a day, some in empty stomach, after brunch and dinner. I personally like something from the inside. I sometimes take a break Both supplements and skincare at least min 4 days and max can be almost 2 weeks for supplement especially if I eat bad. Skincare about a weeks max, just wash with unscented baby soap I'm good and put nothing after. So sorry for the long comment

Definitely be careful with tretinoin if you have sensitive skin! I've been using it for over a year now for acne and while for the most part my skin has reacted okay to it, this past winter was rough! My face got so dry it was peeling (I also have eczema so I'm sure this contributed). I ended up changing my routine up and only putting the tretinoin on every other night and adding Eucerin Ecemza Relief as my nightly moisturizer. Cleared up the peeling within a week! Hoping to just outright prevent any peeling this winter by sticking with this routine 😂

You can sandwich your Tret. After washing your face apply moisturiser, wait 10mins or more if you like and then apply Tret, wait 10mins again and then apply moisturiser and since you have very dry skin i would apply an oil/cream (i forget what this is called) its to seal all the moisture in. I also have a bedside humidifier i use to help.

I use three toners. One is a homemade one which contains ACV with the Mother...of course. 1 part ACV /4 parts distilled water In a plastic spray bottle with a cotton pad. That is what I use in the AM...along with actives. In the mid-PM, after cleansing...I use pure Rose hydrosol as toner with different actives. Bedtime is no Toner and occlusive moisturizer with Retinol Oil and one other active. My skin has improved some by following these guidelines...but I have a long way to go to feel confident. Aging SUCKS. After "cosmetic" or "medical" microneedling...I use an OTC Green Tea Toner that some Estheticians and Dermatologists have recommended in the past. I try to follow these guidelines of Dr. Youn. I trust him. I cannot afford to pay 250 dollars per month for three bottles of a Dermatologist's product line. I appreciate those dermatologists who will recommend alternative and more affordable skincare options...like Dr. Youn.

When I was younger I had very oily cystic acne prone skin. That didn’t settle down until I was in my 30s. Now in my 50s, my skin is more dry, but I still, occasionally, get small acne cysts. I have stopped using sulfates and the like on my sensitive skin. Although, I would love to afford better skincare, I have found the elf brand series Holy Hydration line is working quite well. I even like their acne stick for the occasional breakout.

I'm going to be 36 this year and I've never had any kind of skin care routine, I pretty much washed my face with water only and did a face mask once or twice a year. I've just noticed my skin ageing a lot more recently (I was very ill stuck at home for the last decade but I have been working outside for the past year) so I went and bought a bunch of skin care in the reduced section of TK Maxx because I thought at least that would be the good stuff. I'm a bit overwhelmed by it and I'm trying to hear myself up to having a daily skin care routine, preferably one that doesn't involve needing running water because I don't have that in my caravan. I'm neurodivergent so I thought learning about skincare first and getting excited about it might be the way to talk myself into wanting to use these products on my face daily but I'm not sure if it works like that, I don't know if I can force myself to hyperfocus on this but I am worried because I am starting to look different and it's kinda hard to accept change.. It took me a really long time to recognise my face after a facial injury which left my nose pushed slightly more to one side and now the eye it's pushing against looks like it's aging faster or unevenly because it's got more slack in the skin from where my nose is now. I hope making the rest of my skin look a bit better might make me feel better about that.

It sounds like you have had a difficult time of it! I would start with making sure you cleanse at night and rinse with water in the morning. You can use bottled water applied to a gentle cloth in the morning and micellar water at night, which doesn’t require rinsing. Apply moisturizer, and then sunscreen in the morning and start there. Once you can do that daily start adding one step at a time but those are the very basics imo!

I never expected a whole lot from skincare ingredients. I have used retinoid products for years and it does not do a thing for wrinkles but it does improve texture which is the most any active ingredient does aside from correcting dark spots and evening skin tone. When you have aging skin there is little anything can do for you aside from cosmetic procedures. I never saw the benefits of chemical peel It just burns your skin off temporarily showing newer skin that grows back the same wrinkled skin accept with a greater risk of hyperpigmentation for darker skin when you can simply exfoliate.

First the context , i turned 19 a while ago and my skin care is pretty basic, _extremely basic_ infact, it's a cleanser that suits my skin and a moisturizer and sunscreen. sunscreen I started using only recently about a year ago. I exfoliate, and use face packs and masks weekly too. My question is - should I be including the anti-aging active ingredients already? Since you put great emphasis on it. My skin looks pretty good and clear, it's not glass skin and has visible pores and i do have tanned skin from sun damage throughout all these years where I did not use sun protection. I also do not drink alcohol or smoke. So, is it still important for me to use active ingredients? They're pretty expensive where I'm from but i could still take them. Also, I had heard that anti-aging ingredients are best used when you're 25+ so I'm a bit confused here.

I work at a beauty store and whenever somebody comes in looking for foundation, or they say there’s isn’t working. I always ask what are they doing for a skin care routine. Because that can make a massive difference in the way you are makeup up lays on the skin. We all have a texture, but there are definitely products to help tone down the texture. I’m 42 and I love wearing make up, but I love when I hear the compliment, you have great skin instead of I love your make up or what foundation are you wearing? I also don’t look my age.❤ 42 and people think that I am in my early 30s. I am here for that all day every day.😊 sometimes I think also that these brands come out with products that are individualized ingredients. Well, yeah, you may think that you’re saving money but in all actuality, you are not. The price tag may be small, but if you find one serum with multiples of those ingredients, you will actually be saving money and probably getting better results.

If your skin isn't used to an active, like say a rotenoid, or something like an A- or BHA, would they still be effective if you started by buffering an active or A-/BHA serums into your moisturizer?

This is great and all, but it really only covers one/two skin problems: ageing and sun damage. What about all the other skin problems people can have? I have a lot of scarring from acne, deep, crooked dents that bacteria keeps getting trapped in which causes infections and itching, and large pores that keep getting clogged. I also still get the occasional, mild breakouts despite having dry skin. I also get flaky skin in some areas due to that dryness. That's how my skin is without any skincare at all, aside from maybe a weekly wash. My solution for this is to clean with strong alcohol, ie hand sanitizer (I know you said "no alcohol" but it's the only thing that can clean out those dents properly, I don't use it every day though) with a mild face cleanser, exfoliation, and layers of moizturisers, ie aftershave, aloe vera gel and a thin layer of oil. That's also the order I use those products. My intention with this crazy routine is basically: harsh cleansing and scrubbing to get rid of difficult to reach bacteria, then soothe, cool and restore moisture. And it does have great effects, like making my skin clean, soft, itch-free, infection-free, and at least doesn't worsen the acne. But it doesn't fix the scarring, nor the acne, nor the constantly clogging pores. Why? I don't think it's because I'm using the wrong products or in the wrong order, etc. I think it's because these kinda issues can't be fixed with creams and cleansers to begin with. Maybe laser treatments and prescription drugs could, but not regular over-the-counter stuff. That's fine by me as I'm just not gonna go to some beauty salon, dermatologist or whatever to get some costly, super intense treatments, and that is my personal choice. I just think we need to be real about just how much skincare can actually do. It's great for many things, I'm not denying that, but it's not a miracle cure for all skin issues.

Hello here is a suggested routine that avoids alcohol and includes skin actives: AM : 1. Foaming Facial Cleanser or Renewing SA Cleanser (Cerave ) 2. Witch hazel and Aloe Vera toner (Thayer's Unscented Toner) 3. Vitamin C powder (1/4-1/2 scoop) combined with 3% Ferulic Acid- 3% Reservatol serum (The Ordinary ) 4. A moisturizer with SPF 30 (Vanicream) PM 1. Face cleanser 2. Adapalene Retinoid (Differin Gel from drugstore) OR 2 % Salicylic Acid leave on treatment (Cerave Acne Control Gel) 3. Niacinamide moisturizer (Cerave PM Facial Moisturizing Lotion) 4.Occlusive moisturizer (Aquaphor healing ointment). Alternate the Differin Gel with the Acne Control Gel. Use them on alternate nights never at the same time. You can look up skin cycling. See a dermatologist for micro-needling to reduce acne scars or try an at home micro-needling stamp such as Banish. Avoid D.I.Y micro-needle rollers which can further damage the skin. I don't have acne scars so I have never used micro needling. But you can see if it works for you.

Back in my younger years (late 90s-2000s), I used a retinol. It burned, it turned my skin red and then eventually brown. Stuff was strong and I couldn't keep using it. Considering your point about how things have changed since then, do you think it's worth trying a retinol again? For the record, I have lupus with a mild malar rash. I just want nice skin lol

You should have done it every other night and also put moisturizer over it (he says here active first then inactive) If it’s prescription Retinol (Tretinoin) that’s the golden standard. All the otc retinols still need to convert to retinoic acid, there’s more steps in it…

You need to go in slow with certain actives esp retinol. If you want to try again, don’t use it everyday but work your way up to that. Start with a lower concentration and go up. You can also buffer it by mixing/putting it on top of your moisturizer. Most skincare brands suck and don’t include anti-irritant/soothing ingredients in the product as well so be careful.

I would try a pure squalane first to make sure you’re not sensitive to it, and then follow with the ordinary retinol in squalane to see if you are sensitive to retinol. being in an oil base buffers it to about 10%, so the 0.2% retinol acts like 0.02% in squalane. This might give you better insight into whether the first retinol was just too strong or if you are sensitive to all retinols
