I flew frequently between London and Jo'burg. If possible I flew Virgin, because at that time they used the 340 on that route. I really enjoyed that aircraft; it seemed to fly so gracefully. I once asked one of the pilots how that plane managed such an impressive range. The answer was simple: it is so aerodynamic, (not such a fat fuselage to force through the air), that at the right altitude it could cruise on much less power than other aircraft he had flown. I suppose all that power was needed to get the weight off the ground, but I liked the way it flew into the air rather than heaved itself off the ground like an overweight long jump athlete. 99% of my travel was for business, and being retired I no longer fly at all. I hardly even leave the town where I live, so until 340s are turned into suburban rail-cars I suppose I will never get in one again. Sad.

The issue with the A340 was the wing. It created an awful lot of drag and with four engines it wasnt the most economical
@anthonyglee17103 жыл бұрын
@@RSTurbo50 “a lot of drag”? Strange comment considering anything flying through the air is subject to drag. It’s actually a very good, efficient wing and is essentially similar to the A330s wing still used today. The economics of 4 engines as opposed to 2 is what sealed it’s fate.

@verocimil Жыл бұрын
@@RSTurbo50 I don't know if this applies to all Airbuses A340, but it was so indeed the case with the A340-300 with its smaller engines. You probably know the story, but I will write it down here for the other readers that perhaps aren't aware of this: Airbus didn't get the bigger engines the airplane was designed for at the beginning, since its development took way longer than expected, so that they had to rely on the smaller ones, the CFM56-5C, that were more economical than the current bigger engines at the time, such as the ones later applied on the A340-500 and A340-600 series. Since the CFM56-5C didn't have much power, they increased the wings in order to get a better lift, causing more drag in return. This affected the cruise speed as well, but nonetheless the airplane in this configuration was still more economical than the other versions, enabling a bigger flight range according to what the airplane was indeed initially intended for. kzbin.info/www/bejne/aJykfqJmbMiVaa8

I remember a video I saw --- I can't locate it now --- of an Iberia A340-600 landing and parking at the old Quito airport in Ecuador. That airport had a shorter-than-ideal 2800 m runway at about the same altitude above sea level as the runway length! Not only that, the airport was almost at downtown Quito, and the approach was very complicated, among tall volcanoes of the Andes, lots of spurious winds, and on finals having to avoid the city buildings --- it was one of those approaches definitely in the "scenic, but scary" category! In that video, the plane landed well, but taxiing was complicated, and parking it even more. A tow tractor had to push and pull the very lonnnnnnnng plane several times back and forth in the small apron until positioning it at a jet bridge in a diagonal position that obstructed another gate. Now, THAT was being "too big for the airport"! (Quito now has a new international airport with a very long runway and a huge apron at a much more suitable location outside the city, and the old airport has been closed and turned into a city park.)

What a great video and what a humangeous plane ✈️. It always amazes me how gracefully these planes just lift off the runway. I am sure the people have gotten used to the noise since I am sure the airport was built after the homes were there already. I have been to different airports in Germany but not to this one. Thanks for sharing this video.
@goytabr Жыл бұрын
Probably. The original Tegel runway was built in a record 90 days during the Berlin blockade, to help in the heroic airlift that kept the city alive during that time. Of course it was expanded several times over the years, but it was there from 1948 or so until its closure a couple of years ago. Two curious facts: first, the construction workers at Tegel were mostly women volunteers, and second, when it was built there was a radio tower blocking the takeoff path. That tower was in West Berlin (in the French sector, where Tegel was), but due to the intricacies of the postwar treaties, it belonged to the Soviets. After formal requests to have it taken down were ignored, the French commander just ordered it blown up unceremoniously. The Soviet commander called him furious on the phone: "How could you do that??!!??" The French commander calmly replied: "With dynamite, mon général..." 😂

@@goytabr - You are kidding me aren’t you! So this airport was built in 1948…probably long before any of these houses were there. If this was true that reply would have been perfect. At any rate it gave me a good chuckle 🤭
@goytabr Жыл бұрын
@@annieh.8175, although Berlin is almost 800 years old, it was a very small town for most of its history (some of its modern districts used to be faraway independent little towns and villages). Berlin only grew to become a large metropolis in the 19th century. So, areas farther from the city center like Tegel were relatively recently urbanized, but "recently" in that context means 100-150 years. The Tegel region was an industrial area before the airport was built and I'm sure it was already pretty well populated before 1948. In fact, the area of the airport had been briefly an airfield before, during World War I, but then it was converted into a military training ground. This was why that field was largely unoccupied and an airport could be built there, but it also means that the area surrounding it was not free, it was already built up. Now, however, the airport is closed, the new airport is far away, and Tegel residents don't have to worry about noise any more.

I have a friend who works in the ATC of São Paulo-Guarulhos International Airport in Brazil. It's a pretty big airport with a large apron, but he told me that the A340-600 (and the just slightly shorter -500) could be a nightmare for ground operations. Too long and hard to maneuver and fit everywhere. It often had to be parked at a remote position because it was impossible to solve the equation of making it fit among the occupied positions. Things are better now with the new International Terminal 3, whose gates can (and do) easily accomodate the A380, the 747-8 and other extra-long planes, but I can understand the taxi and parking problems at Berlin-Tegel, a very tight airport initially built for small propeller planes and later expanded, in the middle of what was then a besieged city where space was scarce and precious. I also remember having seen a video of an arriving Iberia A340-600 parking at the old (now demolished) Quito Airport in Ecuador, which was also very tight. The plane not only occupied the space of two gates, it had to be maneuvered back and forth with the help of a tractor, which is very unusual when arriving at a gate with jet bridges.
