With the prospect of the new Buell Super Cruiser on the horizon, one has to wonder if it's too good to be true. Today I'm going over some of my concern about the potential new bike.

The Rotax motor is used in the Can Am spyder, and as such was rated dead last in reliability by that Consumer's guide reliability survey that came out a few years ago. Still it is company that has been around for a while, and makes motors for Aprilia, BMW and KTM and is well known quantity. Rotax engines were used in the 1125 Buell, as well as that EBR machine that Buell made after he left Harley. I think the concern might be more for the financial security of the Buell company rather than the engineering of the motorcycle, but every $50 deposit they get makes them a little bit more financially secure, and $50 isn't really that big of a gamble. You could give them $50 and in the worst case consider it a charitable donation.

Thanks for the info on the motor. Yeah, I figured the same with the $50. Not a huge gamble either way...

They need to get realistic and take more into consideration with emissions regulations. The masses don’t ride motorcycles like they do cars, performance motorcycles in particular. Bikes especially in this category (aimed toward power/performance) should be immune from emissions regulations. Same goes for high performance cars, boats, etc. The emissions they give off are minuscule in the big picture and I guarantee make no difference to the earth whatsoever.

Buell had an open house at their assembly HQ in Grand Rapids, MI last summer. I was able to make it up and check it out. The building also had a “Liquid Asset Partners” sign on it, which is the firm that currently owns Buell. That’s one of the big lingering questions; whether or not these guys are serious, or are just trying to build up enough interest to sell the company and turn a profit. The building is not particularly big, or distinctive. It appeared to be just a general warehouse space that was being used for their assembly needs. Some of the criticism I saw online when Buell announced their return was that these were “new” bikes mostly assembled from remaining EBR parts. There seems to be validity to that, as I saw at least one “EBR” labeled part on one of the new naked bikes they had on display. It was a part around the headlight. Pretty sure the Hammerhead had it, too. They have the same engine in all the bikes, and many have complained about the complete lack of electronics, which again suggests these are mostly old pieces being assembled now. On the flip side, if you are part of Buell’s mailing list, they recently sent out an email (it’s probably on the website as a press release, too) saying they are preparing to hire more people to expand the operation. So take that in to consideration. I can’t help but suspect this new Super Cruiser is mostly a marketing stunt. Time will tell. If we suddenly get a press release about “Buell’s new foreign owners,” we’ll know what the score was. I mean no negativity or malice here, just sharing my observations. I’m happy Buell is back, and I genuinely would like them to succeed. It would be great to have a noteworthy motorcycle company based here in Michigan.

From 1995 to 2008 I owned eleven Buells. From the S2 to the 1125R. Most were very reliable and much fun. The exceptions being the open frame 1997 Thunderbolt and the X 1 Lightening. Both were engineering disasters ( thats from Eric Buell ) He told me that at the races at Daytona. He was running EBR at that time. The 1125R was a quirky machine. I only bought it because my dealer was cleaing them out at a huge discount. I am currently on a 2022 Pan America. Its the machine that the Ulysses may have someday become. I use it for long haul and twisty mountain road touring. This is what I bought it for. As to its offroad prowess I cannot comment. My KLR is for that. For my use the Pan Am is a home run in my opinion its as good as its competition. I hope to see HD move forward with the Bronx as well. I am not very enamored with the Sportster S but only because its just not my type of bike. Nothing wrong with it. I wish Harley well with the Rev Max line. I will keep my 1200 Sporty till I drop. I wish the bew Buell sucess but doubtful. Without Eric is it really a Buell?

I love it. I just wish Harley would have created this with their new Sportster line up. Not a fan of liquid cooling but Buell managed to make it look unobtrusive. It's a fine looking motorcycle. Probably no need for that kind of power. Agree, 100-120hp would have hit the sweet spot in a package that light.

I got to sit on the prototype and Chris Pobanz from Buell cranked it up and gave it some nice brap revs during Daytona Bike Week. It is so sickly awesome. They have an active contract with Rotax to keep building these motors. I have a rotax on my 2009 Buell 1125CR and it's very reliable. People use the 1190 motors all of the time for drag racing. I get about 140hp with my 1125 and the 1190 is like 180+hp. Sounds frickin wicked and is such a quick to rev v-twin. It sounds like a helicopter on speed. There's just nothing like that sound. Also, Chris sold two Buells during Daytona Bike week. This dude is hauling bikes around in the Buell trailer just so people can bare witness to how cool they are. We've got to support American-made sport bike companies. If the Super Cruiser was out now it would be my second bike. Center mount controls and comfort too. It felt really comfy to sit on.

The Rotax in this one will be the same as the one in my 1190RX. It's NOT the same engine that's used in the spyder or in any other rotax application as it was custom designed by Erik Buell and Rotax just happened to have some designs that were very close to that already. Erik and Rotax worked together to make the 72 degree EV2 and then Erik bought the engine design outright so it's not even owned by Rotax anymore. Sure there were some issues with the Bike, but Bill Melvin (current Buell Inc owner) brought in the wizard that was solving all the issues with the mill on the side for all of us anyway, Jacob Stark, as CTO. SO that means the Solenoid issue has been fixed, the fuel pump issue has been fixed, the chain eating the swingarm has been fixed, as well as a myriad of smaller problems. I'm excited for this bike to come out, not because I want one, but mostly because of the excitement around Buell I see it drumming up.

"Liquid Asset Partners" specializes in purchasing, then liquidating business that go bust. They bought what was left of Erik Buell Racing in 2016. But they kept the company instead of immediately selling everything off. They've continued to make a small number of motorcycles since. Then through EBR in 2021, they also acquired the rights to the Buell name. All this to say...I am SKEPTICAL knowing who owns the company and how they acquired it. Erik Buell who is innovative and passionate to his core about motorcycles has been completely out of the picture since Liquid Assets' 2016 purchase. I suspect they're simply using the EBR and Buell names as a longer term business/investment strategy. I suspect they'll eventually sell everything off to the highest Chinese or Indian bidder after they've pumped up the company's perceived value as much as they can. Hopefully Roland Sands personally doesn't get burned in the end.

I pre-ordered one and intend to purchase if it makes it to market. Easily has the most potential for real sales numbers compared to anything they make currently. I think pricing will be in the 18-25k range based on the current RX/Hammerhead prices, which max out at 25k for a fully optioned bike. Only time will tell, fingers crossed its real and they don't price it completely out of reality.

I’d be thrilled if this was real. I’m both a naked sport fella and also 20 year HD equal too. This seems too good to be true and when it feels that way it is. Roland got his commission no matter what so he’s good, Buell can use this as a “hopeful” moment so all gains only for both parties. It’s also enough to get guys like me who have both naked bikes like Aprilia Tuono and Dyna’s with motors built in the same garage so I don’t know. If this is really going to happen, I’d love to ride one and be high chance I’d buy one too. I never really care about dealer help as most good wrenches I know are private anyway and better around a motor than any OEM guy could ever be. I’m more focused on the concerns of this even happening and if it’ll actually perform as planned. As of know we gotta mean ass chopper build that’s super epic but a custom build. It’s like a Woolie build from Deus, building a crazy Pikes Peak naked bike that’s bad ass. A production bike like this? Never seen it happen. If they do. It’ll be a 100 model build max, and 100 pounds heavier with 75 hp less. Then you can have the partners like SC Project, Thrasher, Saddleman etc., all be on board to make special order parts for that bike specifically, but super high priced. What I initially got super pumped and immediately buzz killed over was that “oh shit here we go, check this thing out!” Then, “oh 2025 plans? Ya this is just a game of just the tip, just for a second, to see how it feels”. Not likely to happen. 2 years from now? If they came out guns blazing ready to go and full send committed with even a 2024 release, ok they’re actually for real about this. In the Moto world nothing ever goes as planned, watch the Italians take 10 plus years to change a front end and only cosmetics on an Aprilia. It’s always talk and wishful thoughts. So if Buell is saying 2 full years before we hope for this release, without any dealer network whatsoever, or parts, consider that 5 years for expectations. To be overly fair, if sooner and they pull this off cuz they got enough of America’s, maybe even Canada’s $50 deposits that mean nothing, they’ll release it at 60% best of what Roland did here. Then it’s $25,999 but if you want this exact one, build it with the parts for another $7-$8 grand, now you’re low 30’s for what we’re seeing here. I’m all pure love for 2 wheels so I’m actually praying this thing is real, so don’t get my words twisted, I actually want this to happen. We’re also about to see Dyna Bros like myself who also love track riding naked bikes, do these types of motor swaps in FXR frames our damn selves.

Not sure why they wouldn’t make this bike, it seems to have a lot of excitement about it already and would nicely fill a niche area in motorcycling. I’m sure the acceleration would be awesome, but as far as stability at high speeds (100mph+) I’m not sure. You mentioned sport bikes being stable at high speeds while being light which is true but supersports also have a lot of aerodynamic fairings and the seating position makes the rider lean forward more also helping to cut through the wind. I’m a crotchrocket guy but this bike has caught my interest a bit. I hope they put it into production.

A $50 Pre-Order gets you in line to be among the first to order a new Buell Motorcycle. This is a non-refundable pre-order. It is not an actual order and does not guarantee delivery. Is the $50 Pre-Order payment refundable? Yes, the $50 Pre-Order is refundable. Can I cancel my pre-order? Yes. You can cancel your pre-order at any time prior to confirming your order and model configuration, however you will not be able to receive a refund of your $50 Pre-order. Once you progress from pre-order to your confirmed order, cancellation requests will be at the company’s discretion. Pre-order does not guarantee vehicle delivery nor priority for ordering a vehicle. I have over 40K on the clock on my EBR1190 RX. (same engine as this ugly ass machine) here are the issues: Leakage on the cooling water pump seal, starter full of water after riding in the rain, Stator winding cut by the engine positioning tooth, rectifier burnt. Mostly electrical and not so much mechanical issues. I would like to know how the air is filtered into the engine on this bike, it needs a LOT of clean air. I could list a lot of issues I had with my RX, but this platform is different so might not be = sign between the two. I did not understand your comment about ''too much hp'' this is pure hp out of a lightweight v-twin engine that was developed to be competing in the superbike class. Clearly this engine was never ever intended to be put into a boring ass 1970 kind of cruiser. But all the cruiser guys are now inline to the outhouse jerking off to something they spit on when it sat in the bike it was intended for.

Way north of 20K. I'm thinking around 35K. Im exicted about a performance bike at 450lbs. Really doubt they will sell many becuse only real guys will buy them and at this point all I see is kids on EV scooters.

IMO Buell can only survive if it is owned by a major motor company.

"Only weights as much as DRZ." is the worst analogy or comparision I've heard. Not even in your dreams it's possible to get that lightweight FXR / Dyna sized bike.

I wouldn’t waste my time or money on it. Buell always going bust and most likely this would never make it to market anyhow. Long standing companies producing quality bikes always best option.

I think people need to be realistic. This is a low production tailor made model of bike similar to an arch in that aspect that it’s not gonna be this mass market machine. I doubt it’ll be anywhere near sub 25k for a bike. It’s cool but that’s a lot of custom parts and a fully aftermarket frame. This isn’t a bike built for the average dyna bro or softail homie this is a riders bike it will require proper maintenance and proper care. You want a premium bike you gotta pay premium cash. I wouldn’t be surprised if it ranges from 25k-35k not including any specific options that may be available. I think you will see these mostly in the hands of higher end consumers. This will be owned by top riders and big dick swingers with fat wallets

I think the harley bros who buy one of these will be horrified by the maintenance schedule thats familiar to supersport owners. I had two RXs over the last 5 years. I think there will be a fuckton of "my buell is broken and i dont know why" videos made in 2025-2026 not because the bike broke but because the owners broke it. Harley type self repair guys thinking they know whatsup (not saying they dont know BUT its basically a different skill set) and then the engines go boom

It would likely be very easy for Harley to beat Buell to the punch by offering a cruiser version of the new sportster.
