What I realized is walking a lot is a key. I went to DC this summer for just 4 days. We walked in the morning around 10 miles or so and then in the evening right after the restaurant. We had a dinner around 5 pm :) I ate anything I wanted including a carrot cake at Founding Fathers restaurant as it is their specialty. Some dishes I shared with my daughter and it was more than enough for two of us. As a result I lost 6 lb during that trip. 16 miles a day. Great meals and came back refreshed, lighter and happier :) You both look great and thank you for a perfect advice! 🎉🎉🎉

Hello Norm and Tina, from Sioux Lookout! After subscribing to your channel a little while back, I recalled that you had gotten off the train here for a few minutes during your VIA Rail trip to Vancouver. I moved here from Nfld. 29 years ago, then met my wife Salve here! (We actually returned by train from out west back in the winter of '09, after driving there a few months earlier; a great and worthwhile experience for sure!) On a different note, with me now into my 3rd year of retirement, I've suffered a heart attack (almost 2 weeks ago). It had FELT LIKE A REALLY BAD HEARTBURN (experience for men I've heard)..! After a while at our local emerg., with my wife, I was medivaced by air to Thunder Bay. While there, I received 2 stents and returned home a week ago. There's been no pain or discomfort, thankfully, since the first stent; just occasional stomach upset and a little nausea from my new course of meds. With no family history of heart disease, my situation has likely been the result of salt and grease intake over the years (ie. fondness for potato chips, fries, etc.) with healthier foods mixed in. I've never been much into sweets. I've always been physically active, including walking, etc. but have gained a few extra pounds around the middle in the last few years! We drink lots of water (and 1% milk / juices for me) and there's no smoking or drinking for us. I'll be 60 next month, and now have the opportunity to make things right for better health! Also, prayers for me have been answered..! Barry H. P.S. It's funny that you mentioned fish & chips in the U.K. While we were there in May, we didn't have any in London (or area) but did have one nice meal in north Wales! Did you have some in St. John's during your stops there?; Nfld. is also known for it's excellent fish (cod) and chips! Bye for now; all the best to you both..!

Hello Barry, we are sorry to hear about your heart attack and wish you a speedy recovery. Yes we had fish & chips in St Johns NFL, we have been there a few times once for a week and a stop on a cruise. Take care of yourself N&T

I recently lost 10 lbs by not drinking, eating no bread, having fruit for regular snacks, walking 20 minutes every day. It took about 3 months but I took diet soda when I went to someone's house for dinner instead of wine and let the others drink wine or beer. It took some willpower but I was really motivated. Now I feel better, not short of breath, and I'm fitting into lots of clothes I haven't been able to wear for a long time. People compliment me on how well I look although they don't know it's just because I shed those pounds. Now I'm trying to maintain. I know what I have to do if I want to lose another 5 but think keeping it off is important too.

At last, some common sense about food and diets! I have friends who have been on just about every fad diet for over 50 years. The wife even had a gastric bypass surgery. She lost a huge amount of weight but gained it all back several years after the surgery. They are now spending quite a bit of money on the carnivore diet. I've finally learned in my old age to not comment on their latest diet. They obviously can't see that their track record is terrible and it just keeps repeating itself. Your idea about eating a diet similar to what you ate with your family years ago makes total sense. I feel sorry for my friends because they spend so much time worrying about food and they don't seem happy at all. Thanks for this very practical and useful advice today. Have a great weekend.

When my husband and I were getting ready to take our Alaskan cruise in 2013, we started eating less and walking, and both of us lost about 20lbs, which we needed to do. On the cruise we promised ourselves we could indulge, but immediately after our meals we had to walk around the deck of the ship until we had walked a mile. We did this after every meal, so three times daily. At the end of the cruise we both had actually lost about 5 pounds each. Now we try not to deprive ourselves of the wonderful comfort foods we grew up with, but try eating half as much.

@@ThisIsOurRetirement The plan is for a six week road trip and staying exclusively at KOA camping cabins. I joined their rewards program for a $35.00 annual fee and am entitled to different perks such as an automatic 10% discount on rentals on top of the other off-season discounts and so-called "Hot Deals" that the individual campsites offer, as well as saving up points for future free stays. The luxury cabins are lovely and comparable price-wise to nice hotel rooms. We will only travel in the off-season to avoid the summer crowds and enjoy the lower prices. As an example , on our way home from Myrtle Beach this October we will stop over at the Pigeon Forge KOA for 2 nights to visit Dollywood. The luxury cabin is 20% off the regular price on a "Hot Deal" and we get an extra 10% off because we are rewards members. Plus we get a trolley at the door direct to Dollywood. A 5 minute ride. About $300.00 for the two nights, our own private patio with a bbq, nice muskoka chairs, full kitchen, bathroom, shower. All the creature comforts! Heated year-round pool and lazy river. Looking forward to it and Dollywood for all the great food! This will be a sort of dry-run for our cross-country adventure! Wish us luck,lol.-Mike from Ottawa🍻🥂🇨🇦🇬🇧 p.s. loved your show today!

I have something like yoghurt and fruit for breakfast, meat/fish salad for lunch, and a decent dinner. I do have a sweet tooth and I do like a couple of beers at the weekend. I’m about 180lbs and should be around 155lbs. But to lose that weight is so much more difficult the older you get. My metabolism is really slow compared to where it used to be. Losing weight when you’re older requires complete dedication, and is just pure misery! Do your best, stay healthy and enjoy life

I have lots of thoughts to share with you, Norm & Tina. First off, I grew up in a German household in the US. There was always lots of food on offer, and back then, if you had a little meat on your bones, it was considered a sign of health and vitality. As a teenager, I wasn’t fat, but I was chunky. In my 20’s, I woke up one morning and decided to lose weight. This wasn’t an easy thing for me, as I had become an emotional eater. But I joined Weight Watchers and learned the basic foundations of nutrition. The weight came off and I reached my goal weight. Although I didn’t attend WW meetings, etc, I did weigh in 1x monthly, which held me accountable. In the decades that followed, I continued to use the nutritional foundation gained in my 20’s. Now, about to celebrate my 73rd birthday in 2 days, I’ll share my current keys to success. 1. Weigh in every morning. 2. Avoid refined carbs. 3. Drink plenty of water. 4. Have a green salad every day. 5. Follow a basic Paleo diet. 6. Consume little to no alcohol. 7. Get plenty of exercise. 8. Enjoy life. Yes, it’s a sacrifice, but when I look at myself in the mirror, I like what I see and I feel great, so I’m going to continue doing what I’m doing. Best of luck to you. You two will figure out a system that works well at home and translates easily when you travel. I have every confidence in you!

This is pretty much what I do, also. Weigh in every morning, avoid bread and processed foods, do both cardio and weight training, monitor calorie intake with MyFitnessPal. The benefits of being thin with muscles (at least for men, and I expect also for women ) are incredible. Most importantly, it allows you to do activities (backpacking, skiing, swimming, biking, canoeing, sprint to your gate to catch your flight) that you would otherwise be unable to do.

Great topic, there is no one answer. I had a serious health issue 17 years ago that forever damaged my pancreas. Because of that I am now diabetic. I have had zero sugar for over three years, eat an ultra low carb diet (carnivore with some spices and avocado mayo) and I have honestly never felt better. But that’s me and I wouldn’t wish it upon anyone. Veggies make me very bloated and give me terrible reflux And I really hate them. I love fruit but it spikes my blood sugar. I will fight as long as possible to be medication free. I rarely think about food, I have no cravings. Hardest part is travel….getting high quality protein can be very difficult. My current goal s 15,000 steps a day, weight training and yoga. I’m killing it! Currently 67 years old and have zero excess weight (in fact I’m trying to gain muscle). If I had any recommendations I would say cut out the highly processed foods, don’t eat things you wouldn’t feed your dog, and go for a long walk!

I am always amazed when people say “I lost 40 pounds by doing keto/carnivore/etc.”The reason you lost that amount of weight is because you were obese to start with and stopped eating pizza, pasta, donuts, drinking soft drinks, etc. Try losing the last 10 pounds. That’s the hardest thing to do! And 10 extra pounds for someone who has never been obese is a big deal.

Great advice. Something that's helped me eat less is to eat high protein early in the day (especially eggs) and eating proteins first in every meal. Indeed, each meal is high protein. As a result, I naturally eat less because the protein (especially animal proteins) satiate me the most, hence eating less. For late night snack, if I need it, I have a little Greek yogurt (high in protein) with berries and stevia. But yes, when traveling, I am much less strict than when I am home.

The number one thing is to eliminate any processed foods. Second is to avoid carbs as much as possible due to inflammatory issues. I control the amount of vegetables i eat due to the chemicals used in farming vegetables. The diet i eat has controlled my type 2 diabetes as well as arthritic inflammatory issues. One needs to increase protein intake as we age. I take my protein in with meats, dairy and supplements and keep away from Soy products. The most important thing is to keep moving. Walk, cycle, swim, ski, resistant train,etc. Just keep moving.

I grew up poor in a big family so we never had fresh fruit or vegetables, good bread or quality cuts of meat - only processed junk food. As an adult, my tastes changed and so did my cooking abilities. Married and widowed twice, I cooked to please others until I finally began to cook to please myself. That’s where the weight issues began. I love rice and sweets, and I had a job sitting at a desk all day. That lead to weight gain. Now I try to reduce carbs, eat less, and workout regularly. I am not at my ideal weight, but I’m headed that way. I really miss rice though.

Yes, it gets difficult to lose weight as we get older for many reasons. I gained 10 to 15 pounds in 2022 after my doctor increased the dosage of one of my heart medications. Even after eating less, I still can't lose the weight. I'm thinking I need to exercise more , such as walking and lifting 5 pound hand weights. I decided not to go to the South of France for my holiday in October; instead I will be going back to Ireland, where there's never a dull moment. France can wait until next year. I'll eat food I normally don't eat. As you said, I'm on holiday. I'm dreaming of fish and chips from the chipper and salt and vinegar crisps, plus 1 or 2 full Irish breakfasts. Plus a friend and I will enjoy afternoon tea at a Dublin hotel. Bon appetit!

So we tend to eat one main meal a day sometimes it is mid day. When we travel it is usually a late lunch as the meal for the day. We also do not eat a lot of meat and tend to lean toward the Mediterranean diet, so lots of vegetable dishes. Love the food in Greece, veggies, fish mainly, in Portugal we lean towards fish, but have to admit love the chicken you can get at some of the restaurants. France is good as the portions are smaller. When in the UK usually have ethnic food as I find the UK palate is just mainly meat & potatoes, white bread with butter!!! For fitness, we attend yoga classes, as a senior it is $70 per month for unlimited yoga. We also walk quite a bit. I used to run marathons/half marathons and plan to get back into that after a year off. As we age it is important to stretch and stay flexible.

Forget crazy diets and strenuous exercise. Just eat real food (ultra processed and fast foods aren’t food - they are engineered to be addictive and generate profits). Eat mindfully, get enough sleep and move your body every day. Going for a walk or swim is fine, although some light weight training helps prevent muscle loss. Maintain your friendships and other social connections. Your quality of life and your health will improve with any unreasonable restrictions. 😉 Thanks for the video - cheers!

Good observations! Have you tried intermittent fasting? This is simply NOT eating after 7 or 8 o'clock at night and going 12 or 14 or 16 hours before your next meal. (we do 12-14). We both tried it and over a year we lost 30 - 40 pounds. That, plus walking after meals if possible and cutting down on wine :) Enjoy your travels - and enjoy that wonderful food. That is what travel is for, after all.

I have observed that extreme diets don’t work long term. One of the cardiologists I follow recommend avoiding processed foods and sticking with whole foods. Yes, walking is a start. My grandmother lived until she was 96 with her wits intact and she was eating rice, pork and a whole bunch of vegetables. She also walked a lot and she kept up with the latest news regarding the whole clan of 9 kids plus 35+ grand children plus great grand children.

I lost a lot of weight as a consequence of restricting myself to anti-inflamatory diet to reduce psoriasis. Surprise I lost 70lbs. now at 170lbs. I enjoyed the foods in my diet and lost all cravings! One cheat day a week allowed. FORGET about looking forward to treating yourself. I now know when I am being a pig. I look around at all the pigs.

Interesting video. Everyone is different and what works for one person might not work for another. I was always terribly thin growing up and used to pray that I could gain a little weight. Well, God waited till I was 40 and still many years later, I'm 15 to 20 pounds overweight. I'm also a type 2 diabetic as was my mother and all her and my father's relatives. I do not eat sugar and limit bread. I eat plenty of vegetables and meat and no processed food. When cruising I indulge in the delicious sauces, skip most of the potatoes and often have a taste of my husband's dessert. It works for me and I don't think, at my age, that 15 pounds overweight is that bad and neither does my doctor. You two look wonderful and I think you're on the right track.

Yes it is all about moderation but that seems to be a very difficult concept for many people. Veg/fruits, dairy, grains and lots of different protein sources (of course avoiding or limiting what you cannot tolerate) decrease added sugars and processed foods and get back to cooking!! Also don’t forget about what you are drinking and that includes alcohol. Sadly our metabolism slows down with aging so any type of exercise/movement helps and some weight and resistance exercises to help maintain our muscle mass and bone density!! We do have to work at it 😅

I don’t drink or smoke so my main indulgence is some of my favourite foods that are not the most healthy. At 61 in order to maintain a reasonable weight I have to eat about 50% of what I did in my 30s…it sucks….On another note not sure if you have done any videos on how to make a little extra income once on pension, for example perhaps you could walk us through how to build up a you tube channel and the steps it took to become monetized. Or any other part time money making suggestions for seniors that are not too stressful. Thanks.

Great subject. I am 73 and just started the Carnivore plan (diet) mostly because it is believed that eating mostly fatty meat will heal the body and brain. Now I do agree that all the food additives are a real issue with our food today. I agree that eating smaller amounts and eating fresh grown fruits and vegetables are a better way to eat but we have e to rid our body of all the crap that has caused so much inflammation before we can get back to basics. I am only 10 weeks into this plan but have noticed inflammation is reduced, less joint aches and pains and better body composition to date. I agree that eating for health and enjoyment should be the goal. Wondering how you felt doing carnivore snd why you stopped. Exercise and weight training are also important as we age. Enjoy your insight on various subjects.

The best way to diet is to learn to enjoy and appreciate good food, single ingredient high quality foods carefully prepared. Eat what you want as long as it is freshly prepared from single ingredients and you are sitting down consciously appreciating the taste. Do that for a few months and it will train your palate so that you won't want to eat between meals or eat junk food or use highly flavored sauces.

Quite the Snacking!! that I have found to be a BIG problem. Going back to your roots (when we were children) is a good idea. I remember we had 3 meals a day but really never snacked in between meals. This is a problem with society today and we just never give our system a time to finish digestion. We just constantly eat something all day long. if you stop eating by 7:00 pm and don't snack through out the day in between meal, you will also see a big difference. Its worked for me and millions of others.

Thank you for your video. I really enjoy listening and seeing you. I agree completely- stay away from ultra processed food. For those who do t know what ultra processed food is or includes - just listen to some research (videos) on the subject. You will learn so much valuable information. As long as you eat real food- that is grown and not ultra processed- you WILL loose weight, and more importantly- you will keep the fat off of your body. The ultra processed food is basically pre-digested and filled with preservatives and chemicals and even things like saw dust (very true!)- it’s called cellulose when you look at the ingredients on the box. It’s a filler. The ultra processed food damages our digestive systems because it doesn’t require our bodies to digest the food- When eating out- which makes it difficult to retain a whole and real food “diet”- try to order a meal that includes a meat, real vegetables and even a real potato or real rice are okay, too. Just keep what is in your plate- “real” food. Skip fast food, altogether- as it is nothing more than ultra processed JUNK: garbage!

Yes, you are right, we must go back to our traditional foods that we ate as children way back. Also in vegetarian foods, many vegetables are not available in the restaurants, so we need to do a bit more cooking by ourselves, we eat many vegetables like bitter gourd, snake gourd, pumpkins, etc. which are very good for our health. Also we used to buy our vegetables and groceries in the market and carry them home, this is weight training, good for our muscles rather than order online. People should do all these things which were done earlier, then we wont gain weight so fast.

@matthewfoulger46822 ай бұрын
@@sandray7609 Certainly, better than highly processed foods but potatoes and rice are high in simple carbs and starches which keep glucose levels higher for longer. Fruit in moderation because of the fructose. Carbs and fructose are sugar.
@sandray76092 ай бұрын
@@matthewfoulger4682 Our bodies and brains were designed to live off of glucose. Look up Dr Barnard and a book called Mastering Diabetes (Type 1 diabetics who eat high carb whole food plant based). Fat is what blocks glucose from entering our cells, insulin can't do it's job properly. You can eat a healthy carb diet, lose weight and reverse diabetes. Because it avoids fats, it prevents blocked arteries, heart disease, and cancer. The science is out there if you want to open your mind to the alternative approach that leads to longevity and health

I was slim and most importantly I was healthy. Here I come to US and everything changes. All these diets with crazy ideas. I am going back to what I was eating growing up and we shall see! I always was gravitating to starches and grains but I was not doing it right.

First of all, you two look great and really don't need to lose any weight in my opinion BUT I always say, do what makes you happy. If it would make you happy to lose a few pounds, go for it. I've been overweight my whole life and am finally getting things under control. I have also tried many diets and have finally settled on a new life philosophy. Moderation, period. I can eat a chocolate bar, but not 10. I can have a piece of cake or pie, but not 3 pieces. I used to buy and eat one of those Ben and Jerry pints in one sitting, now I make it last 3-4 sittings. I have tried to cut down on my meat consumption just because I'm staring to see all animals as deserving better. Do I think I'll be able to give up meat entirely? I doubt it but I have started to have more meatless meals. I try to listen to my body. I often crave a certain food and I think that's because my body needs whatever that food has to offer. I love food too much to give up certain things but I am learning to just eat less. I actually find that as I get older I can't eat as much anyways. I remember family dinners as a child on a summer weekend my Dad would bbq steaks and I could eat a big T-Bone with veg and potato all on my own. Now, I end up saving half the meal for the next day. Eat what you want, just in moderation. Oh, and exercise. You don't need a gym membership, just go out for regular walks. The Europeans walk everywhere while in Canada and the US, we drive. I walk a lot more now and I see and feel the difference.

This is a hard one… When I was younger I could loose weight like nothing. Now 68 and its like the older I get the harder I have to work at it. I’m Portuguese and we love our bread … lol Anyway I know one thing for sure .. do weights 3 times a week , cardio at least 30-45 minutes a day, I don’t have a gym membership now, I used to. I watch Leslie Sansome walking videos utube., I don’t think diets work because sooner or later you will miss those foods. I lost 15 lbs years ago for my daughter’s wedding , by cutting out liquor , bread , junkfood, , I ate mostly salads, I am vegan , so beans , tofu, cur out the vegan cream in my tea. It was hard but I felt great after… Then covid hit and I put on the covid 20 lbs … Anyway it took hard work, and here I am again… sheesh… You two look great , sometimes its good to have a little extra in case you get sick … you have something to fall back on . Lol.

Remember you can customize food at most Fast food joints via their apps... So order an egg mc muffin minus butter or cheeze if you like , order a Whopper with lite mayo but heavy onions ...tweek it to make it more healthy but still taste OK. Same thing with drinks, order an iced coffee at Mc dee's minus the liquid sugar and sub for 2 packs of regular sugar and you've cut the calories in 1/2 , don't order a flavor (Just plain coffee with cream and sugar) and again you've cut the calories back a bit.

I think standard diets are not the answer. One has to find the right diet individually. - My wife (55 yo) lost 30Kgs last year with the help of a doctor-nutritionist. She guided my wife how to eat healthy. Changed her eating patterns from time to time (what to eat, what not to eat, time when to eat) and my wife lost weight in no time. People have seen her success and seeing that 12 individuals used the service of the same nutritionist as well. One of them has lost 9Kg in 2 months, others have lost almost nothing the first few months. But they all had success (not only weight loss, but also additional health benefits) without suffering and without hunger. - And now my wife eats without diet plan (generally with less carbs, less sugar). From time to time she sees again her nutritionist, does some short term adjustments and that is how she keeps her weight.
